Fabrication of Antibacterial Biodegradable Films Using a Radiation-induced Reduction Method

The simple and facile radiation technique of the preparation of antibacterial biodegradablepolymer films containing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) was described. The biodegradablepoly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) films containing silver trifluoroacetate (AgTFA) were prepared by a solvent casting method, and then the films were irradiated by electronbeams at the various doses ranging from 20 to 200 kGy to form Ag NPs in the biodegradablepolymers. The results of UV-vis and FE-SEM/EDX analyses revealed that the Ag NPs weresuccessfully formed in the PBAT matrix during the electron beam irradiation, and their amountswere dependant on the absorbed dose and Ag TFA concentrations. Furthermore, on the basis ofthe results of the antibacterial test through disk diffusion and colony counting test, the irradiatedPBAT/Ag TFA films exhibited the antibacterial property due to the formation of Ag NPs.
Surface modification of multi-walled carbon nanotubes by radiation-induced graft polymerization

Polystyrene-grafted multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were successfully synthesized by a simultaneous radiation-induced graft polymerization process. The degree of grafting was found to be strongly dependent on the grafting conditions such as the absorbed dose and the initial monomer concentration in the grafting solution. The results showed that polystyrene was successfully grafted onto the surface of MWCNTs. The synthesized polystyrene-grafted MWCNTs exhibited a good solubility in organic solvents. In this study, in terms of the exercise vehicles of the weapon systems having negative buoyancy, the analysis on the operation concepts was performed and the new methods of floating to surface were proposed. In case of having negative buoyancy, the additional methods for recovering the exercise vehicle have to be considered. As parts of recovering the exercise vehicle, for floating to surface the new methods of weight discharge, weight separation and sea water discharge were proposed. The conceptual design about sea water discharge method was performed. It was confirmed that those methods could be applied to the design of the exercise vehicle having negative buoyancy.
