        Heavy Metal Accumulation in Oxyloma hirasei from the Upo Wetland

        Human activities have enhanced the influx of heavy metals to aquatic ecosystem and changed theabiotic environment such as the sediments supporting benthic organisms. The levels of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) in the benthic gastropod Oxyloma hirasei and the sediments around their habitat were investigated to examine heavy metal levels and the potential of the gastropod as a bioindicator. We detected different levels of heavy metals in the sediments of two wetland areas, Upo and Mokpo, in the relatively well-conserved Upo wetland, Ramsar Convention Area. Oxyloma hirasei had higher concentrations of heavy metals except Cr and Ni in their soft tissues than in their shells (Cd: 2.10∼3.16, Cu: 19.73∼28.66, Pb: 0.67∼1.17, Zn: 216.1∼285.7 μg/g dry weight in the soft tissues; Cr: 1.19∼2.58, Ni: 0.47∼1.16 μg/g dry weight in the shells). Differences in the Cd, Cu, Ni and Pb concentrations in O. hirasei soft tissues reflected differences in heavy metal concentrations in the sediments at the sampling sites. The coefficients of variation for Cd, Cu and Pb were lower than those for other metals in the soft tissues. Levels of Cd in the tissues of O. hirasei were O. hirasei appears to be a promising bioindicator particularly for Cd.

        Saccharomyces cerevisiae 6-3, resistant to hexaconazole, was selected from S. cerevisiae Y-139, sensitive to the fungicide, irradiated with UV light for 32 min EC_50 value of 6-3 showed at 345 58㎍/㎖, while that of Y-139 was 0.21 ㎍/㎖. In YEPD media, the growth rate of Y-139 was higher than that of 6-3 After incubation for 12 hrs, however, the growth of 6-3 in YEPD media amending 1㎍/㎖ of hexaconazole was faster than Y-139 The application of hexaconazole to Y-139 caused the decrease of composition ratio of ergosterol in the cell and the accumulation of irregular sterols such as 14α-methyl-ergosta-8,24(28)-dienol, lanosterol, and 24-methylenedihydrolanosterol The accumulation of irregular sterols was began 2 hrs after application of the fungicide to incubation media of Y-139 Resistance of 6-3 to hexaconazole induced the increase of resistance to nystatin, antifungal agent With these results, it suggests that the action mechanism of hexaconazole in S cerevisiae Y-139 was the inhibition of 14α-demethylase, and that 6-3 happened to be resistant to hexaconazole by the biosvnthesis of another sterol

        문제중심학습(Problem-Based Learning)을 활용한 예비 생물교사 대상의 식물분류학 수업 사례 연구

        This study was aimed to investigate the effects of problem-based learning (PBL) applications in plant systematics classes for pre-service biology teachers through two problems about the vegetative and reproductive organs of plants during 8 weeks. The study was conducted with 26 pre-service biology teachers from one college of education. This study reported the first PBL class case in plant systematics classes as a part of botanical education for pre-service biology teachers, and thus, the students’ solutions to the problems were presented. The data for the students’ views about the PBL classes was collected from a questionnaire on the plant teaching efficacy, students’ reflective journals and semi-structured interviews. The students produced diverse solutions through active participation to PBL activities. Plant teaching outcome expectancy was shown to be higher than personal teaching efficacy. Pre-service biology teachers expressed satisfaction with the PBL activities for creating plant teaching materials. They were found to have enjoyed the process of communicating with their members, forming good relationship and solving problems with collaborative learning in PBL classes. Although expressing lack of time, they also had opportunity for self-directed learning and indirect experience in teaching. In conclusion, PBL needs to be applied to other biological subjects for educating pre-service teachers.

        생태계와 먹이그물 개념에 대한 초등학생 및 중학생들의 이해 수준 분석

        The purpose of this study was to investigate elementary and middle school students’ level of understanding on the concept of ecosystem and food web. To do so, the study collected data from 71 6th grade elementary school students and 102 1st grade middle school students, through the questionnaires consisting of four items. The students’response was analyzed in terms of four levels of understanding of the concept of ecosystem and food web, respectively. The result shows that firstly, level 2 was most frequent among the students (69.1%), while level 1 was 15.5% and level 3was 15.0%. Meanwhile, the highest level was only 0.6%, showing students’ difficulty in understanding the concept of ecosystem. Secondly, in terms of the understanding on the concept of food web, the level 1 was most frequent (52.1%), while the highest level was 14.5% and level 2 was 22.5%. The analysis shows that only small portion of the studentswho learned related concepts perceived the ecosystem as both having biotic and abiotic components. Furthermore, The tendency in students’ understanding to perceive the ecosystem same as the food web was stronger among the middle school students than the elementary school students. This suggests that too much emphasis on the food web when learning the concept of ecosystem might have a negative influence on students’ remembrance and understanding. Based on the analyses, the study suggests that there is a need for developing learning activities that provide students with various kinds of causality as happening in the ecosystem.

        예비 생물교사의 식물 동정 지식과 식물 지식 자기 평가에 영향을 미치는 요인

        Through teacher preparation courses, biology teachers need to be educated to have sufficient plant species identification knowledge to teach students for botany education, which might help the students understand biodiversity. However, understanding of the key factors affecting pre-service biology teachers’ plant identification knowledge remains poor. The aim of this study was to investigate whether demographic factors(sex and school year), interests to plants, experiences with nature and life, environment-friendly characteristics, and Big 5 personality traits of pre-service biology teachers may predict their knowledge of local plant species identification and self-assessed evaluation of one’s plant knowledge. The analysis of multiple linear regression and general linear model revealed that female gender influenced knowledge about herb identification positively, while school year showed a positive relation towards knowledge about tree identification and self-assessed evaluation of one’s plant species knowledge. In contrast, environmental sensitivity and New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) did not influence on the outcome variables. In addition to sex and school year, the plant identification knowledge was predicted by their affinity with plants. The final model of self-assessed evaluation of one’s plant knowledge was explained by affinity with plants and indirect experiences, indicating the mediating effects of agreeableness and openness. These results suggest that pre-service biology teachers is required to continuously learn botany related lectures like plant systematics in order to have sufficient knowledge about plant identification and confidence in plant knowledge.

        상업스포츠센터 이용정도가 서비스 질과 여가만족에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between commercial sports center usage level and user's leisure satisfaction. For this purpose, we sampled the 386 participants who exercised at the private sports center in Young Dong area in 2003. The questionnaire to measure the level of user's leisure satisfaction was adopted from the study of Bang(1997), and Won(1989). And the questionnaire to measure the quality of service level was adopted from the study of Huh(1997). The statistical techniques used in this study for analyzing the collected data were reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and standard multiple regression analysis.Based on the findings of these analysis, the results of this study were as follows;First, commercial sports center usage level, perceived quality of service, and user's leisure satisfaction are partially different each other. This indicated that the education level can affect the quality of service. Second, there were partially meaningful relationship between commercial sports center usage level and perceived quality of service. This indicated that the perceived quality of service by the users can be changed depends on the duration of facility usage.Third, there were partially meaningful relationship between commercial sports center usage level and the level of user's leisure satisfaction. In detail, the usage level affect both social and physical satisfaction.Forth, there were meaningful relationship between perceived quality of service and the level of user's leisure satisfaction. This means that the perceived quality of service can determine the level of leisure satisfaction.Fifth, there were partially meaningful cause and effect relationship among commercial sports center usage level, perceived quality of service, and the level of user's leisure satisfaction.
