Ecofeminism, Cyborgs, and Androgyny: Mad Max: Fury Road

Dystopia and utopia have long been attractive themes for film producers because both ideas are based in our real society. George Miller’s Mad Max series, especially the third film Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985) features the failure and dethronement of a political dominator in a dystopian setting. It is noteworthy that Miller launches the fourth installment in his series, Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), after a hiatus of thirty years. There exist wide and significant disparities between the previous installments and Fury Road, not least of which is that the new movie centers upon a plot of female liberation. The movie overthrows traditional gender roles by foregrounding the female general Furiosa, who oscillates between the solid gender binaries of masculinity and femininity. Predictably, discourse around the movie is frequently anchored in analyzing the feminist features of it. Rather than regarding the movie as merely “feminist,” however, this paper attempts to probe the unique feminist agenda that the fourth movie implies. This paper contends that the movie depicts both ecofeminist and technofeminist ideas, which in fact are incompatible in their discourses, and ultimately reaches toward the theme of androgyny. This paper first examines the ecofeminist features of Mad Max: Fury Road as displayed by its female characters, and argues that the movie exceeds the threshold of ecofeminism by moving on to the diametrically opposed theory of technofeminism through its exploration of Furiosa as an androgynous cyborg. Therefore, this paper aims to scrutinize the Ecofeminism, Cyborgs, and Androgyny / Kim, Choyeon 367 ecofeminist, cyborg, and androgynous elements of the movie and asserts that it portrays the liberation of both the male and the female.

여성 성장소설로서의 각성과 19호실로 : 비극적 결말을 통해 보는 기혼 여성의 성장

The Bildungsroman has exerted its influence since its advent and become a substantial genre in the volatile realm of literature. Although the bedrock of the genre, Bildung, is a philosophical and educational belief which appreciates one’s potential and development, the genre and its discourse have become ossified by its emphasis on one’s conservative integration into the society which is primarily symbolized as marriage. Hence, novels that portray resistance or insubordination of the characters are diminished as mere failures in the genre of the Bildungsroman. This paper, however, attempts to re-evaluate Kate Chopin’s The Awakening and Doris Lessing’s “To Room Nineteen” as examples of a Bildungsroman of the married women, and argues that the gist of the genre is not the cohesion between the individual and society but the thorough cognizance of one’s actual position in society. This paper first traces the operation of the “separate spheres” ideology which hinges on gender, and examines the protagonists’ astute recognition of their restricted circumstances under a patriarchal system when they choose death. This paper proposes that The Awakening and “To Room Nineteen,” where an individual accurately perceives her limitations and potential, can be understood not as errant versions of the genre but a different kind of Bildungsroman.

문화적 차이가 정보의 양과 소비자 선택성과의 관계에 미치는 조절 효과 : 권력 격차와 불확실성 회피 차원을 중심으로

This study investigated the moderating role of cultural differences, power distance and uncertainty avoidance, on the relationship between the amount of information and consumer choice-quality. The sample used in the study was 203 college students and graduate students in Korea and the United States of America. Following analysis results were obtained. We find that there is a significant inverse U-shaped relationship between the amount of information and consumer choice-quality in samples of Korea and the United States. Also, this study confirms that difference in power distance dimension moderates the relationship between the amount of information, and consumer choice-quality. In other words, higher power distance dimension worsens the U-shaped relationship, in other words, information overload. However, the dimension of uncertainty avoidance does not affect the inverse U-shaped relationship. We conclude that the difference in power distance dimension, not uncertainty avoidance, affects the relationship between the amount of information and consumer choice-quality.

Propolis and honey are beekeeping products and are widely used as health supplements for humans. Previous studies have shown that propolis and honey have various physiological properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects. In order to investigate the physiological response induced by propolis and honey, including developmental time (larval and pupal periods), reproductivity, and adult lifespan (both male and female), we treated Drosophila melanogaster, a representative model organism, with these beekeeping products. We observed alterations in developmental time, adult longevity, and reproductivity in D. melanogaster treated with either propolis or honey. Interestingly, when honey or propolis induces an increase in oviposition, the survival rate of female adults tended to decrease. However, when female D. melanogaster were fed with propolis the oviposition rate remained constant and, the extended longevity was observed. In this study, we provided insight into the physiological activity of honey and propolis through the Drosophila model, and future follow-up studies are expected to elucidate their molecular physiological mechanisms.
