A New record of four Penicillium species isolated from Agarum clathratum in Korea

Agarum clathratum, brown algae, play important ecologicalroles in marine ecosystem, but can cause secondary environmentpollution when they pile up on the beach. In order toresolve the environment problem by A. clathratum, we focusto isolate and identify Penicillium because many species arewell known to produce extracellular enzymes. A total of 32Penicillium strains were isolated from A. clathratum samplesthat collected from 13 sites along the mid-east coast ofKorea in summer. They were identified based on morphologicalcharacters and phylogenetic analysis using β-tubulinDNA sequences as well as a combined dataset of β-tubulinand calmodulin. A total of 32 strains were isolated and theywere identified to 13 Penicillium species. The commonly isolatedspecies were Penicillium citrinum, P. roseomaculatum,and Penicillium sp. Among 13 Penicillium species, four species– P. bilaiae, P. cremeogriseum, P. madriti, and P. roseomaculatum– have not been previously recorded in Korea. For these four new species records to Korea, we provide morphologicalcharacteristics of each strain.

This study investigated whether culture filtrates produced by Xylella fastidiosa can be used to determine the varietal susceptibility to Pierce's disease in grapevines (Vitis spp.) as a substitute for pathogen inoculation or field screening. A bioassay of grape leaves with culture filtrates from the pathogen showed that their phytotoxicities were active and host-selective. Ethyl acetate extracts from them also showed toxicities and host selectivity in both bunches of grapes and muscadine grapes. The sensitive range of plants to the culture filtrates and their ethyl acetate extracts was consistent with the host range of the Pierce’s disease pathogen. Susceptible cultivars are sensitive to even highly diluted culture filtrates, while resistant cultivars were not affected even at their original culture filtrates. Susceptible cultivars were more sensitive to the undiluted culture filtrate than were highly diluted culture filtrates, and the younger leaves were the most sensitive to the culture filtrates in grapes. Although some European grape cultivars showed moderately susceptibility in this study, the determination of varietal resistance to Pierce’s disease by the treatment of culture filtrates of pathogens could provide valuable information for the preliminary selection of genetic resources and seedlings from hybridization in a disease resistant grape breeding program.
Diversity of fungi associated with roots of Calanthe orchid species in Korea

While symbiotic fungi play a key role in the growth of endangered Calanthe orchid species, the relationship between fungal diversity and Calanthe species remains unclear. Here, we surveyed root associated fungal diversity of six Calanthe orchid species by sequencing the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region using 454 pyrosequencing. Our results revealed that Paraboeremia and Coprinopsis are dominant fungal genera among Calanthe species. In terms of overall relative abundance, Paraboeremia was the most common fungal genus associated with Calanthe roots, followed by Coprinopsis. Overall fungal diversity showed a significant degree of variation depending on both location and Calanthe species. In terms of number of different fungal genera detected within Calanthe species, C. discolor had the most diverse fungal community, with 10 fungal genera detected. This study will contribute toward a better understanding of those fungi that are required for successful cultivation and conservation of Korean Calanthe species.
몬테카를로 시뮬레이션을 통한 노후 디젤발전설비 교체기준 고찰

내륙의 주전력 공급계통과 단절되어 있는 도서지역은 대부분의 전력공급을 디젤발전설비가 담당하고 있다. 디젤발전설비는 특성상 예방정비 및 유지보수를 통해 사용수명을 연장시킬 수 있으나, 계속 사용에 따른 기계설비의 노후화 및 발전 효율 감소로 인해 운영비가 증가한다. 즉, 적기에 노후 발전설비를 교체할 경우 발전소 운영비용을 줄일 수 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 디젤발전설비의 상태를 대표할 수 있는 지표를 도출하고, 몬테카를로 시뮬레이션을 이용하여 각 지표별 민감도 분석을 수행하고자 한다. 이를 통해 디젤발전설비의 현상태를 정량적으로 나타낼 수 있는 상태점수를 정의하고 이를 바탕으로 설비 교체의 기준을 마련하고자 한다. The diesel driven power generation facility provides most of electricity of island region where is isolated from the main land power supply system. It is possible to extend the life of diesel driven power generation facility by periodic maintenance. However, the long-term use of diesel driven power generation facility increases the operating cost due to aging hardware and reduced plant efficiency. In other words, on-time replacement of aging diesel driven power generation facility reduces plant operation cost. The purpose of this study presents major indicators to represent the characteristics of the diesel generator and conducts sensitivity analysis using Monte Carlo analysis. In addition, status core which indicates quantitatively the state of the diesel driven power generation facility is defined and prepare the replacement criteria based on the state score.
