Porcine intestinal lymphoid tissues synthesize estradiol

Estradiol (17b-estradiol) is synthesized primarily in the gonads of both sexes and regulates the development and function of reproductive organs. Recently, we reported that intestinal lymphocyte homeostasis is regulated by estradiol synthesized de novo in the endothelial cells of the high endothelial venules (HEVs) of mesenteric lymph nodes and Peyer’s patches in mice. This observation prompted us to hypothesize that HEVs of intestinal lymphoid tissues are sites of estradiol synthesis across species. In this study, we examined whether estradiol is synthesized in the intestinal lymphoid tissues of adolescent piglets. Comparisons of estradiol levels in blood and tissue showed that estradiol concentrations in mesenteric lymph nodes and Peyer’s patches were significantly higher than the level in serum. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction showed that porcine intestinal lymphoid tissues express mRNAs for steroidogenic enzymes (StAR, 17b-Hsd, 3b-Hsd, Cyp17a1, and Cyp19a1), and immunohistochemical results in ilial tissue showed expression of aromatase (CYP19) in Peyer’s patch-localized endothelial cells of HEVs. When mesenteric lymph node and Peyer’s patch tissues were cultured in vitro, they produced estradiol. Taken together, the results indicate that mesenteric lymph nodes and Peyer’s patches are sites of estradiol synthesis in adolescent piglets.

<P> <I>Objective</I>: Delirium is an important syndrome found in patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), however, it is usually under-recognized during treatment. This study was performed to investigate whether delirious patients can be successfully distinguished from non-delirious patients by using heart rate variability (HRV) and machine learning. <I>Approach</I>: Electrocardiography data of 140 patients was acquired during daily ICU care, and HRV data were analyzed. Delirium, including its type, severity, and etiologies, was evaluated daily by trained psychiatrists. HRV data and various machine learning algorithms including linear support vector machine (SVM), SVM with radial basis function (RBF) kernels, linear extreme learning machine (ELM), ELM with RBF kernels, linear discriminant analysis, and quadratic discriminant analysis were utilized to distinguish delirium patients from non-delirium patients. <I>Main results</I>: HRV data of 4797 ECGs were included, and 39 patients had delirium at least once during their ICU stay. The maximum classification accuracy was acquired using SVM with RBF kernels. Our prediction method based on HRV with machine learning was comparable to previous delirium prediction models using massive amounts of clinical information. <I>Significance</I>: Our results show that autonomic alterations could be a significant feature of patients with delirium in the ICU, suggesting the potential for the automatic prediction and early detection of delirium based on HRV with machine learning.</P>

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the use of statins and the occurrence of delirium in a large cohort of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), considering disease severity and statin properties. Methods: We obtained clinical and demographical information from 3,604 patients admitted to the ICU from January 2013 to April 2020. This included information on daily statin use and delirium state, as assessed by the Confusion Assessment Method for ICU. We used inverse probability of treatment weighting and categorized the patients into four groups based on the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score (group 1: 0−10 - mild; group 2: 11−20 - mild to moderate; group 3: 21−30 - moderate to severe; group 4: > 30 - severe). We analyzed the association between the use of statin and the occurrence of delirium in each group, while taking into account the properties of statins. Results: Comparisons between statin and non-statin patient groups revealed that only in group 2, patients who were administered statin showed significantly higher occurrence of delirium (p = 0.004, odds ratio [OR] = 1.58) compared to the patients who did not receive statin. Regardless of whether statins were lipophilic (p = 0.036, OR = 1.47) or hydrophilic (p = 0.032, OR = 1.84), the occurrence of delirium was higher only in patients from group 2. Conclusion: The use of statins may be associated with the increases in the risk of delirium occurrence in patients with mild to moderate disease severity, irrespective of statin properties.

<P>In this paper, we demonstrate the structure and characteristics of the bandwidth-efficient stereoscopic 3-D broadcasting system entitled service compatible 3-D-TV using main and mobile hybrid delivery (SC-MMH), which enables the broadcasters to provide three different types of services (2-D fixed, mobile, and 3-D) by transmitting only the two legacy broadcast streams (2-D fixed and mobile). By combining the two existing broadcast networks, the proposed system provides high quality 3-D services, fully guarantees backward-compatibility with the legacy fixed/mobile 2-D receivers, and maximizes the channel efficiency. One major feature of the proposed system is bit-rate saving based on the video resolution asymmetry between the left and right eye views, also referred to as “mixed-resolution.” Although it is well-known wisdom that the mixed-resolution stereoscopic videos are perceived close to the higher resolution based on the binocular rivalry suppression theory, the perceived quality also depends on the factors such as scale ratio, viewing distance, bit-rate distribution, and types of codecs. Therefore, we conducted the objective and subjective tests to measure the service quality of the proposed system and find the optimum bit-rate distribution points, and with the results, we demonstrate that SC-MMH can provide the satisfactory quality when the proper level of bit-rate is allocated to the mobile service.</P>
Enzyme free cell detachment using pH-responsive poly(amino ester) for tissue regeneration

Despite the advantages of stem cell injection to the skin wound site, this technique is limited in terms ofthe delivery of therapeutically functional stem cells to the wound site. Considering the abnormalmicroenvironment of a wound site, even a small damage or loss of cell function induced by severe trypsintreatment might lead to decrement of the therapeutic efficacy of stem cells. In this study, we havesynthesized pH-responsive polymer mixed poly(amino ester) (mPAE), which can provide the appropriatecell culture condition for cell growth without cytotoxicity along with the maintenance of extracellularmatrix after detachment using low pH (6.0) PBS. Human adipose derive stem cells (hADSCs) cultured onand detached from mPAE-coated tissue culture plates (TCPs) showed similar cell adhesion andangiogenic paracrine factor secretion, compared to hADSCs cultured on and detached from TCPs withtrypsin. As a result, hADSCs detached with pH 6.0 PBS from mPAE-coated TCPs showed similartherapeutic angiogenesis and wound regeneration, compared to the hADSCs detached with trypsin fromTCPs. In conclusion, our pH-responsive polymer, mPAE, might be utilized as an enzyme-free celldetachment system for future tissue engineering.
적조 관측 및 예보를 위한 비주얼 시스템의 설계 및 구현

우리나라 연안에서 발생하는 적조로 인한 피해가 매년 증가되고 있다. 적조로 인한 피해를 최소화하기 위한 노력의 일환으로 적조 발생을 야기하는 환경 지표를 관측하고 예보하기 위한 비주얼 시스템을 개발하였다. 기존의 웹 기반의 관측 시스템의 늦은 응답성, 다양하지 못한 사용자 인터페이스, 데이터 저장 불가능성을 극복하기 위해 전용 브라우저 기능을 하는 클라이언트 시스템을 개발하여 인터넷을 통해 언제 어디서든 적조관련 정보를 쉽게 관측할 수 있게 하였다. 그리고 데이터의 수집과 분석, 그리고 관측을 실시간적으로 할 수 있도록 설계 구현하였다. The amount of damage suffered from the red tide occurring at the near shore is increasing rapidly. The visual system discussed in this paper was developed in order to minimize the damage. The system is focused on the monitoring the sea's environment and forecasting the red tide occurrence. Several similar systems are now existing, but most of them are based on the web application. Therefore the large response time, limited presentation ability of data, inability of data storing at client side are pointed out as weaknesses. The visual system described in this paper operates on the Internet to get the ubiquitous access. One of three components of the visual system, client system is developed as a Windows application in order to overcome the previous system's weak points. The gathering, analysis, and monitoring of data can be done at real time using the visual system.
