To prepare activated carbon with a high specific surface area, oxygen functional groups (OFGs) that can serve as useful electron donors during KOH activation were treated with nitric acid and incorporated into activated carbon. OFGs are incorporated differently according to the surface characteristics of starting materials. Up to 22.46% OFGs are incorporated into wood-based activated carbons (WACs), the C=O, COOH contents was 1.90, 17.05%, respectively. Whereas up to 12.82% OFGs are incorporated into coconut shell-based activated carbons, the C=O, COOH contents was 4.12, 6.15%, respectively. The OFGs used for increasing the specific surface area are the carbonyl group, and as the content of the functional group increases, the carbonyl group spreads to the carboxyl group. The specific surface area of activated carbons increased by 10–68% with an increase in the carbonyl group up to 6% (maximum point of carbonyl group). On the other hand, the specific surface area for WACs increased when the carboxyl group was 10% or below, but decreased by 6–15% when it increased to 10% or excess.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the indoor environment of office building with underfloor air distribution system and ceiling based air conditioning system. The underfloor air distribution system was introduced to use access floor and aim to economical motive such as reducing floor to height level. Researches were not sufficient to preserve the characteristics between ceiling based air conditioning system and underfloor air distribution system. Experiments have been carried out to indoor environment in the summer and winter. As the result, thermal environment of the underfloor air distribution system is better than ceiling based air conditioning system in the winter. Ventilation effectiveness of the underfloor air distribution system is bigger than ceiling based air conditioning system.

A patient diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) suffering from numbness in the toes and fingers, paralysis in the face, and back pain received intravenous immunoglobulin on December 28, 2019. Without an improvement in symptoms the patient was admitted to a Korean medicine hospital on January 1, 2020 to receive combined Korean medicine treatment including herbal medicine (Sipjeondaebo-tanggami and Hyangbujasunkipalmul-tang), acupuncture treatment, moxibustion, cupping treatment, and physical therapy. Treatment was administered over 51 days, of which 17 days were during hospitalization. Paralysis of facial muscle, and numbness in fingers and toes were evaluated using the Yanagihara score and numeric rating scale (NRS) score, respectively. Facial paralysis improved (21 to 40 based on Yanagihara score) and paresthesia of the hands and feet disappeared (NRS score 6-7 to NRS score 0). There were no side effects or sequela. This study suggested combined Korean medicine treatment may be effective for the treatment of GBS.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the dismal malignant disease in gastrointestinal tract. However, since the recent literature reporting median survival of FOLFIRINOX (leucovorin clcium, fluorouracil, irinotecan hydrochloride, oxaliplatin) chemotherapy was more than 12 months in metastatic pancreatic cancer was published, the positive attitude toward the treatment of the advanced pancreatic cancer is gradually expanded among the medical and surgical oncologists. Due to multiple combination of potent chemotherapeutic agents, potential adverse side effects should be concerned when considering FOLFIRINOX. Herein, we report a 55-year old male patient with locally advanced pancreatic cancer who successfully underwent curative resection following by laparoscopic division of pancreaticosplenic ligament due to long-term preoperative use of FOLFIRINOX related hepatic toxicity associated with secondary hypersplenism. The present case suggests the extended radical PD with combined major vascular resection following laparoscopic division of pancreaticosplenic ligament containing splenic artery and vein can improve the safety of curative resection and may expand the potential indication of pancreatic cancer in well-selected long-term use of preoperative FOLFIRINOX induced hepatic toxicity associated with secondary hypersplenism.
The Comparison of Mydriatic Effect Between Two Drugs of Different Mechanism
( Ji Hyun Park ),( Young Chun Lee ),( Se Youp Lee ) 대한안과학회 2009 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.23 No.1
Purpose: To maximize effective use of mydriatic drugs through comparing the pupillary dilation effects between 1% tropicamide and 2.5% phenylephrine. Methods: Fifty people requiring pupillary dilation were divided into 3 groups. Group 1 was treated with one drop of 1% tropicamide in the right eye and one drop of 2.5% phenylephrine in the left eye. Group 2 was treated twice during a 5-minute interval with 1% tropicamide in the right eye. Group 3 was treated twice during a 5-minute interval with 2.5% phenylephrine in the right eye. Groups 2 and 3 were treated with 2.5% phenylephrine and 1% tropicamide in the left eye, administered during a 5-minute interval. The pupillary size was measured in all groups for 40 minutes following eye drops administration. Results: The mean patient age was 15.7 years. Group 1 included 10 patients, and groups 2 and 3 included 20 patients each. Eight patients in group 1 and 16 patients in group 2 developed a larger right pupil. Fourteen patients in group 3 developed a larger left pupil. Conclusions: Our study showed that 1% tropicamide, with its parasympathetic antagonistic mechanism of action, was more effective at inducing pupillary dilation than 2.5% phenylephrine, and the combination of 1% tropicamide and 2.5% phenylephrine was more effective than multiple drops of single eye drops.
