Monte Carlo Simulations of Colloidal Particle Coagulation and Breakup under Turbulent Shear

Both a Monte Carlo model and an algorithm were presented to simulate the particle coagulation and breakup phenomena taking place in a colloidal solution under turbulent fluid shear. The model is represented by the probability density functions that describe the stochastic coagulation and breakup phenomena taking place among numerous particles. From a dimensional analysis of the model two dimensionless groups, k_c and k_b were derived that represent the relative intensity of the coagulation and breakup phenomena. In order to overcome the memory problem in saving the sizes of a large number of particles, the model was converted to a form suitable for carrying out a sectional mass balance. Detailed simulation steps were presented and applied to acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) latex coagulation. Numerical simulations revealed that the steady state particle size distribution does not depend on the initial distributions but on the k_c/k_b ratio. Setting the operation variables to increase the ratio was found to shift the particle size distribution toward larger particles.

Laminar inhalation flow as well as micron-particle transport and wall deposition in a representative four step bifurcation airway model have been simulated using a commercial CFX code. The solid modelling about bifurcation airway has been one step developed from the referred lung model. Inlet boundary condition was determined through the Weibel's model. Because of particle inertia force, Stokes number plays a very important role in wall particle deposition. Smaller particles tend to follow the streamline more than bigger one. The quantitative results of this work are of interest to researchers either conducting health risk assessment studies for inhaled particulate pollutants or analyzing drug aerosol deposition at desired lung target sites.

Particulate matter are became a concern and will be limited by future emissions regulation in gasoline direct injection(GDI) engines. Such as the upcoming Euro 6 legislation BMW N53 3.0L In this research, GDI engine was used to universal ECU. Universal ECU was operated under a mototron program is based on MATLAB simulink program. The size distributions are measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS). The size distributions are measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer. THC, NO<SUB>x</SUB> and emitted particle are reported for ignition timing injection timing and number of injection at 1500rpm BMEP 1.5bar condition. The result shows that increased THC and decreased particle size at advanced injection timing. However THC, NOx and particle size was measured to same value at advanced ignition timing.

무유화중합은 단일입경을 합설할 수 있다는 점에서 많은 연구의 대상이 되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 투명성이 뛰어난 MMA와 구조가 비슷하나 약간의 고무성질을 나타내는 EMA를 공중합시켜 입경 및 물성의 변화를 관찰하였다. 단량체와 물의 비율은 1/10으로 고정하였으며 개시제는 K_2S_2O_8를 이용하여 70℃ 및 80℃에서 반응을 진행하였다. 반응의 조건에 관계없이 구형의 입자가 관찰되었으며, 반응 전환율은 100%에 이르는 것으로 관찰되었다. 입경은 개시제의 농도에는 무관하였으나, 반응온도가 증가하며 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다. 유리전이온도는 반응온도에서 단량체의 비에 따라 변화하였으며 MMA의 양이 감소할수록 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다.
