Vol.7 No.4

The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy of the natural cosmetic products that use active ingredients and minimize harmful ingredients to the skin to the general cosmetics, thereby proving their efficacy and need for commercialization. This will not only enhance people's awareness and renew their perspective on the natural cosmetic products. The experiment was conducted on 45 people in total over the period of eight weeks from September 1 to October 28, 2009 as follows: the natural products manufactured by Bellmona were applied on 15 people in Group A for four weeks; 15 people in Group B used the natural products for four weeks and then the general products for another four weeks; and 15 people in Group C used the general products for four weeks and then the natural products for another four weeks. MPA5 580 (Courage & Khazaka Gmbh, Germany) was used to compare and analyze the changes in skin moisture, sebum, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), melanin, and erythema indices. The findings revealed that the use of the natural cosmetic products led to the stable increase of skin moisture and sebum as well as the decrease in TEWL, melanin, and erythema compared to the use of the general cosmetic products, showing the statistical significance in the enhancement of the skin. The natural cosmetic products that minimize the use of the chemicals used in the general products such as synthetic surfactants, preservatives, fragrances, anti-microbial agents, stain, etc., were found to lead to whitening (reduction of melanin index) as well as enhanced skin recovery and elasticity (increase in skin moisture and sebum, and decrease in TEWL) without causing any skin irritation (reduction in erythema index) by helping the absorbance of active ingredients.

Vol.10 No.2

While the economic and time costs of developing new drugs are so high that we can t imagine them, the success rate to final commercialization is extremely small. Natural Product-Derived Drugs discussed in this paper is to develop medicines using natural products extracted from living plants or animals. Natural products have been used as drugs used in human life on the level of traditional medicine during the history of humankind, so the safety and effectiveness of the human body have been confirmed. Therefore, the development of medicines using natural products has the advantage of shortening the development process required for general medicines. In addition, Korea has classified oriental medicine as a separate academic system within the dual system of the medicine, and excellent talents have received the education and are licensed as a oriental medical doctor. Therefore, Korea has an environment suitable for systematic and leading development of Natural Product-Derived Drugs from traditional Korean medicine compared with other countries. Nevertheless, within the current legislation, the definitions of natural products, herbal medicines, and crude drug preparations are different and their scope is unclear, and there are limitations in the development of Natural Product-Derived Drugs by specialists such as oriental medical doctors using traditional Korean medicine. In addition, Korea has deleted the existing preferences that have been granted to the Natural Product-Derived Drugs development process since 2017. For this reason, the current Natural Product-Derived Drugs development process is the same as the general new drug development process, and the situation of slowing down the speed of development Natural Product-Derived Drugs is occurring. This paper examines the process of developing Natural Product-Derived Drugs and the regulations on them, compares the US case with that of Korea, and examines the direction of proper regulation of Natural Product-Derived Drugs development process. In particular, Korea has a legislative system for nurturing oriental medicine with a dual medicine system. Therefore, we will examine how this situation interacts with the legislation on the development of Natural Product-Derived Drugs.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by recurring symptoms, airflow obstruction, and bronchial hyper-responsiveness. The onset of asthma for most patients begins early in life, and current asthma treatment with anti-inflammatory agents can have adverse effects, eventually leading to impaired quality of life. In the pathogenesis of asthma, macrophages and basophils play a vital role during progression. Macrophages not only induce inflammation by secreting inflammatory cytokines but also promote DNA damage and mucus production through nitric oxide (NO) production. Basophils enhance eosinophil recruitment and aggravate asthma through the FcεRIα receptor with high affinity for histamine and IgE. Therefore, in this study, we investigated whether the activation of macrophages and basophils is suppressed by the individual extracts of 28 natural products. RAW 264.7 cells (mouse macrophages) were treated with the natural products in LPS, and 4 natural product extracts resulted in decreased NO production. In β-hexosaminidase assay using RBL-2H3 cells (rat basophils), 19 natural product extracts decreased β-hexosaminidase production. In NO production and β-hexosaminidase assay using macrophages and basophils, 3 natural product extracts (Plantago asiatica, Centella asiatica, and Perilla frutescens var. japonica) significantly inhibited NO production and β-hexosaminidase release. Overall, we examined the inhibitory effects of 28 natural product extracts on macrophage and basophil activity, and the findings demonstrated the potential of natural product extracts for treating asthma and macrophage- and basophil-related diseases.

A study on textile design for infant and children’s clothes with the motive of Jeju natural resource persimmon

Vol.25 No.6

The natural resources of Jeju are recognized as the new regional image of that clean island. Reflecting these trends, this study is initiated to develop a textile design with the motive of persimmon, a natural resource of Jeju, and to apply it to infant’s and children’s clothes. Its purpose is to highlight the image of persimmon, a traditional dye, as a regional signature for Jeju. Product development procedure included, understanding the use of persimmon for fashion products, analyzing Infants’ and Children’s designer collections over the last three seasons (focused on 2014S/S, 2015S/S, and 2016S/S), and surveying the Children’s Clothes market for persimmon dyeing in Jeju. The conclusion was that, the natural resources of Jeju are highly valuable, and should be applied to textile design and apparel products for children. Utilizing Jeju persimmon was actively studied, but, the market for the Jeju persimmon natural - dyeing products is extremely limited. Moreover, the apparel products for infants and children represent old-fashioned styles, despite their higher prices. Therefore, using the formative characteristics of persimmon for each theme was suggested for development of patterns for textile design. Pattern designs were expressed using textured textile screen-printing, embroidery and appliqué for infants’ and children’s clothes. In this study, a total of 10 items were prepared as apparel products for infants and children. All items were designed considering mix-and-match, potential, with each other or with regular mass-market products. These results are expected to contribute to highlighting the unique image of Jeju and to help promote fashion culture products.

Vol.31 No.5

In an effort to establish the theoretical basis of traditional medicine in Korea’ the radioligand receptor binding study was conducted with natural products. Some natural products used as antipsychotics in traditional medicine displaced the radiolabeled probes from the receptors of dopamine-2 and serotonin-2 in central nervous system of male Sprague-Dawley rats. The results were as follows; 1) Reviewing the books about the oriental medicine including Dong Eui Bo Gam, there were over 200 natural products in prescriptions and mono-drug regimen treating the mental disorders, mainly psychosis. 2) For D 2 receptor analysis with 3[H]-spiperone as radio-ligand, the striatal tissues o f male Sprague-Dawley rats were used. The Bmax of the receptor was 146.54fmole/mg protein and the Kd was 0.38 nM as the basic data of studies. Of the 36 natural products, Polygala tenuifolia only had shown the affinity to the D 2 receptor and m ade the dilution-binding curve. 3) The 5 H T2 receptor binding study was conducted with 3[H ]-ketanserin and the cortical tissue. The Bmax and Kd were 57.34 fmole/mg protein, 0.08 nM, respectively. There was Polygala tenuifolia, M achilus thunbergii, Erigeron canadensis, and Citrus unshiu which showed the affinities and the dilution binding curves. 4) There could be related follow-up studies. One is to establish the reference books about biochemical structures and pharmacological characteristics o f com ponents of natural products in traditional medicine. Another is to screen other natural products by radio-ligand receptor binding study. And the other is to identify the pharmacological and biochemical characteristics of the effective com ponents of natural products which show affinities to the receptors in this study.

Vol.10 No.1

This paper develops and evaluate how weather derivative product is applied to natural gas industry. If developed weather derivative product is used as hedge tool, what is hedge performance from natural gas industry in Korea. Recently weather derivative product is developed as hedge tool because the loss from natural catastrophe in past time was small amount and also this loss is hedge easily. However, today, huge loss from natural hazard is not covered by only insurance coverage. Instead of insurance tool, many papers suggest the weather derivative product which is good tool to cover huge loss from natural catastrophe. A financial weather contract can be defined as a weather contingent contract whose payoff will be in an amount of cash determined by future weather events. The settlement as values of a weather variable measured at a stated location. A financial weather contract can take the form of a weather derivative or of a weather insurance contract. While the differences between the two types of contracts might be important from regulatory and legal viewpoints, from an economic perspective both instruments share the common feature of being triggered by an underlying weather index. In discussing agricultural policy and risk management tools, this is probably the most relevant aspect. Weather derivative financial product contract can be used to hedge businesses exposition to weather variables. If the activity of a firm is influenced by temperature, snowfall or shushine, a derivative on the appropriate weather variable could be used to reduce revenue fluctuation. Weather has always been a source of risk for many economic activities, but it was not until the late 1990``s that firms explored the possibility of hedging against weather-related variability through weather derivatives. The impetus for developing weather markets was given by the deregulation of the US energy sector, when local monopolies had to start competing on broader markets and find measures to stabilize fluctuating revenues. Ordinary insurance and reinsurance tools were traditionally designed to target catastrophic events, and were probably too expensive and not sufficiently flexible for ordinary risk management practices that focus on fluctuations closer to the mean of the distribution. Faced with these challenges, energy traders started thinking of financial solutions for trading their exposure to weather risks within their own industry. In this paper, we focuses on the natural gas industry and investigates the hedge demand and performance using daily weather data. The natural gas industry is one of most important energy industry and thus analyzing this natural gas industry is contrubution to development of weather derivative product and hedge of huge natural catastrophe risk. From this paper, we develop the weather derivative product appropriated to Korean natural gas industry and also evaluate the hedge demand and performance. The empirical results are as follow: we find that big hedge demand in Korean natural gas industry exists from hedge performance and demand. Also we show that if it is hedge based on HDD futures and options, cost in hedge case is less than cost in no hedge case and also we find that there is no excess than allowed risk level. We think that this paper give us new prospective view in terms of financial innovation and financial engineering as well as financial industry.
