        Electrostatic precipitator is the equipment that separates dust particles from the gas in which they are suspended. Specially, for the construction of industrial electrostatic precipitator the corporations would send the technical papers to a customer to accept an order. And, it is made a detail drawing after accept an order. Since the basic techni cal design of electrostatic precipitator is very complex it takes long time and includes design errors. Thus, for competitiveness in these industries, the development of software for technical and concept design is important. In this study, the software is called 'KOCO', and deals with a basic technical and concept design of industrial electrostatic precipitator. By using the software, design time was very short, design errors reduced largely, and the standardization of design could be carried out.

        The miniaturization of electrostatic precipitator is becoming a key element to the success of the efficient electrostatic precipitator due to the limited space allowed to install electrostatic precipitator in subway tunnel. Therefore, the miniaturization of rapping system in electrostatic precipitator is also important. This research proposes a resonant-type electromagnetic vibration exciter for vibrating rapper of electrostatic precipitator. Collected dust is removed by a compact size of vibrating rapper from collecting plates, not by imposing direct impact to the dust collecting plates. Moreover, to analyze the acceleration when the number of collecting plates increased from one to four, we manufactured a prototype. Additionally, we analyzed a prototype of resonant frequency using ANSYS, and we measured the acceleration at the resonant frequency.

        Design and Experiment of an Electromagnetic Vibration Exciter for the Rapping of an Electrostatic Precipitator

        The miniaturization of an electrostatic precipitator has become a key element in successfully constructing an efficient electrostatic precipitator because of the limited space allowed for installation in a subway tunnel. Therefore, the miniaturization of the rapping system of the electrostatic precipitator has also become important. This research proposes a resonant-type electromagnetic vibration exciter as a vibrating rapper for an electrostatic precipitator. The compact vibrating rapper removes collected dust from the collecting plates without direct impact on those collecting plates. To characterize the dynamic performance of the electromagnetic vibration exciter, finite element analysis was performed using a commercial electromagnetic analysis program, MAXEWLL. Moreover, we analyzed the resonant frequency of an electrostatic precipitator, to which the electromagnetic vibration exciter was applied, by ANSYS. Also, to measure the acceleration generated by the electromagnetic vibration exciter, we manufactured a prototype of the ESP and electromagnetic vibration exciter and measured its acceleration at the resonant frequency.

        A numerical study on particle collection for wavy dielectric plate in 2-stage wire-plate electrostatic precipitator

        This study numerically investigated the ultrafine particle collection characteristics in the two-stage electrostatic precipitator with the dielectric plate according to the shape of the dielectric separator and air inlet velocity. This study developed a multi-physics model which analyzes the electrostatic characteristics and particle motion of the electrostatic precipitator and was implemented by using UDF (user defined function) in Ansys Fluent. The effect of the electro-hydrodynamic flow induced by the corona discharge formed in the vicinity of the high voltage wire on the air flow in the charged region of the electrostatic precipitator was investigated. The trajectories of charged ultrafine particles and their collection efficiency depended on the shape of the dielectric separator and air inlet velocity. The collection efficiency for the wavy dielectric separator is higher when the air inlet velocity is low and lower when the air inlet velocity is high, compared to that for the flat dielectric precipitator.

        전기 집진기의 유동 균일도 향상을 위한 챔버 설계에 관한 연구

        In this study, we designed an electrostatic precipitator to reduce particulate matter emissions from a marine diesel engine. We determined the optimal collecting plate spacing inside the electrostatic precipitator and evaluated its performance through experiments. We also used numerical analysis to identify the flow uniformity inside the electrostatic precipitator that was difficult to confirm through experiments. We analyzed the electric current and voltage according to the distance of the collecting plate to select the optimal plate gap and confirm the dust collection efficiency. We calculated the flow uniformity of the electrostatic precipitator by checking the internal flow velocity through numerical analysis and evaluated the structural safety by examining stress and deformation. The study results showed that the electrostatic precipitator was stable with a collecting plate spacing of 15 mm and a dust collection efficiency of 80% or more. We also observed a flow uniformity of more than 92% through numerical analysis and confirmed the structural safety of the precipitator.

      • 실내 공기청정 적용을 위한 2단 전기집진기의 집진효율 및 청정화능력 평가

        Particle collection efficiency and air cleaning capacity were tested for the two-stage electrostatic precipitator for use in indoor air cleaning systems. A wire-plate type ionizer was used as a particle charger and a dielectric film consisted of polypropylene (or polyethylene) coated metals and zigzagged metal electrodes was used as a particle collector in the electrostatic precipitator. Both particle collection efficiency and air cleaning capacity increased as increasing the applied voltage on the charger and the collector, and furthermore, as increasing the collector film width (i.e. collection area). Air cleaning capacities estimated by the product of particle collection efficiency and air flow rate were quite well consistent with the experimental ones with a proportional constant of 0.964. Ozone concentrations emitted from the charger at the applied voltages of 5.0 and 5.2 kV were less than 0.05 ppm, indoor ozone standards of UL 867-2002, KS C 9314 and SPS-KACA002-132. For the air flow rate of 11.7㎥/min, the applied floor area of 48.2㎡ could be obtained when 5.2 kV and 6.0 kV were applied on the ionizer and the collector, respectively and the collector of two 15 mm polyethylene dielectric films was used.

        Demonstration of a Modular Electrostatic Precipitator to Control Particulate Emissions from a Small Municipal Waste Incinerator

        Incineration is conceptually sound as a waste treatment technology. There is, however, concern over its emissions when it is improperly designed and operated. An electrostatic precipitator is one of the most commonly used devices to control particulate emissions from boilers, incinerators and some other industrial processes. In this work, a modular electrostatic precipitator with sizing of 1 m × 1 m×1 m was developed for removal of particulate matter from the exhaust gases of a small waste incinerator. Its design was based on a simple wire-and-plate concept. The corona discharge wires were connected to a positive high-voltage pulse generator, while the collection plates were grounded. The high-voltage pulse generator was used to produce the corona discharge field between the individual discharge wire and the collection plate. The particulate-laden exhaust gas flow was directed across the corona discharge field. The charged particles were deflected outward and collected on the plate. The collection efficiency was evaluated as a mass loading ratio between the difference at the inlet and the outlet to the particulate loading at the inlet of the precipitator. The collection efficiency of this modular electrostatic precipitator design was approximately 80 %.

        Nowadays, a research on electrostatic precipitator in urban railroad equipment technology is under an active study. More and more, its miniaturization is becoming a key element to the success of the efficient electrostatic precipitator due to the limited space allowed to install electrostatic precipitator in subway stations. Therefore, there is an increasing need for replacing dry rapping system used with a hammer, which is the most pervasive method to clean electrostatic precipitators. This research proposes vibrating rapper for cleaning electrostatic precipitator using electromagnetic linear actuator. Collected dust is removed by vibrating actuator from collecting plates and discharge electrodes, not by imposing direct impacts to the dust collecting plates.

        미세먼지의 집진효율 향상을 위한 전기집진기의 자계인가특성에 대한 연구

        본 논문은 실내에 잔존하는 직징 1[μm] 이하의 미세먼지들을 집진하기 위하여 전기집진기를 설계하였으며, 이때 집진 효율의 극대화를 위하여 전계와 동시에 자계를 수직 및 수평으로 배치함에 따른 실험실 공기중에 포함된 미세먼지의 집진특성에 대하여 논하였다. 전계에 수평으로 자계를 인가한 경우는 자계의 유무 및 자석의 수량에 관계없이 집진효율이 거의 일정하게 나타났으며, 자석을 수평으로 배치하여 전계에 수직으로 인가한 경우는 비자화 페라이트 막대를 부착한 경우보다 약 5[%] 이상 집진효율이 향상되었다. 또한, 자계를 전계에 수직으로 인가하는 방법에 있어서, 자석을 접지전극의 가운데 정렬한 경우는 인가진압 5[kV]에서의 집진효율이 17~32[%]로서 자석을 앞쪽에 설치한 경우와 유사하였으며, 지그재그 및 안쪽 끝에 정혈시킨 정우는 집진효율이 17~38[%]로서 향상되었으며, 특히 0.7 및 1[μm]의 굵은 입자들에 대한 집진특성이 양호하였다. 따라서, 전기집진기의 집진특성을 향상시키기 위해서는 자계를 진계에 수직으로 접지전극의 중간 또는 지그재그 식으로 배치하는 것이 가장 적절한 것으로 판단된다. This paper gives the experimental results for the effective precipitation of particulated matter(PM) below 1[μm] of diameter using the electrostatic precipitator, which is designed by ourselves. In order to improve the precipitation efficiency, the vertical and parallel magnetic field to the electric field is applied simultaneously by arranging ferrite magnets. When the parallel magnetic field is applied, the precipitation efficiency does not improve in comparison with non-magnets. However, when the vertical magnetic field is applied, it is improved about 5[%] more than the case of non-magnetized ferrite plate used. In addition, when the magnets are installed at the center of ground plate electrodes, the precipitation efficiency is ranged from 17 to 32[%] under the applied voltage of 5[kV]. It is similar to the case of the magnet arrangement at the front part of ground electrode. Also, the precipitation efficiency is more improved by arranging magnets as the inside part and zigzag on the electrodes. Especially, large particles of 0.7 and 1[μm] is more easily captured by electrostatic precipitator. Consequently, it is convinced that the vertical magnetic field is more desirable than parallel magnetic field on the electric field for the effective treatment of particulated matter.
