        Anatomical Correlates of the “Closing-In” Phenomenon

        Background and PurposeThe “closing-in” phenomenon refers to the tendency to copy near or overlap a model while performing figure-copying tasks. The mechanisms underlying the closing-in phenomenon have not been fully elucidated, and previous studies only investigated the mechanisms through neuropsychological tests. We investigated the neuroanatomical correlates of the closing-in phenomenon using voxel-based morphometry (VBM). MethodsThirty-eight patients diagnosed with probable Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and 21 normal controls were included. All subjects underwent neuropsychological testing to diagnose dementia and magnetization prepared rapid acquisition gradient echo brain magnetic resonance imaging for the voxel-based statistical analysis. The subjects were asked to copy the modified Luria’s alternating squares and triangles to quantify the closing-in phenomenon. We applied SPM8 for the VBM analysis to detect gray matter loss associated with the closing-in phenomenon. ResultsThe patients with probable AD showed a higher closing-in score than that of the normal control subjects (p<0.0001). The VBM analysis revealed more parietal and temporal atrophy in the patients with AD than that in the normal control group. Moreover, atrophy of the orbito-frontal area was associated with the closing-in phenomenon. ConclusionsThe closing-in phenomenon is dysfunction while performing figure-copying tasks and is more common in patients with AD. The analysis of the orbito-frontal area, which is associated with inhibiting primitive reflexes, revealed that the closing-in phenomenon is an imitation behavior commonly observed in patients with frontal lobe damage.

        Design of a smart MEMS accelerometer using nonlinear control principles

        This paper presents a novel smart MEMS accelerometer which employs a hybrid control algorithm and an estimator. This scheme is realized by adding a sliding-mode controller to a conventional PID closed loop system to achieve higher stability and higher dynamic range and to prevent pull-in phenomena by preventing finger displacement from passing a maximum preset value as well as adding an adaptive nonlinear observer to a conventional PID closed loop system. This estimator is used for online estimation of the parameter variations for MEMS accelerometers and gives the capability of self testing to the system. The analysis of convergence and resolution show that while the proposed control scheme satisfies these criteria it also keeps resolution performance better than what is normally obtained in conventional PID controllers. The performance of the proposed hybrid controller investigated here is validated by computer simulation.

        매체 전환에 따른 ‘황순원 소설’의 변용연구 영화, TV드라마, 애니메이션, 만화를 중심으로

        ‘Hwang Sun Won’s Novel’ is a center of phenomenon which novels are transformed various medias, but it is excluded related discussions. In 1960s and 1970s, ‘Hwang Sun Won’s Novel’ was transformed to cinema, and a number of ‘Hwang Sun Won’s Novel’ TV drama increased more than cinema from 1980s. Novel 「Rain Showers」 was produced from 1970s, and it is steadily transformed in 2000s. There are two reasons why ‘Hwang Sun Won’s Novel’ is transformed to various medias by having close relationship with Korean political purpose. First, medias used literary epic between popular appeal and accepting literary authority by giving distance from military government’s political situation. Second, ‘Hwang Sun Won’s Novel’ was chosen as a good materials that can connote political situations and ideologies in various medias by dramatization. The basic elements which ‘Hwang Sun Won’s Novel’ is produced to various medias are a popular aspect, condensed and concise writing style, neutral ideology and atemporal aspect. I will investigate Novel 「Rain Showers」, because it is not only to transform cinema and TV drama, but also to show the basic elements of ‘Hwang Sun Won’s Novel’. ‘황순원 소설’은 다양한 매체로 변용되어 작품화되는 현상의 중심에 서 있었지만, 이와 관련된 논의에서 배제되어 왔다. ‘황순원 소설’의 영화적 변용은 1960 1970년대 주로 이루어졌으며, 1980년대부터는 영화보다 TV드라마로 많이 제작되었다. 또한 소설 「소나기」도 1970년대부터 제작되었으며, 2000년대에 들어와서도 꾸준히 변용되고 있다. ‘황순원 소설’은 한국의 정치적 목적과 밀접한 관련을 가지며 다매체로 변용된다. 그 이유를 두 가지 관점으로 바라볼 수 있다. 첫째, 군부집권 시기의 정치적 상황에서 거리를 확보함으로서, 문예의 권위를 수락하는 충실성과 대중성 사이에서 문예의 ‘서사’를 적극적으로 활용하였다. 둘째, 각색에 의해서 다매체에 정치적 상황과 이데올로기를 담을 수 있는 좋은 재료로 ‘황순원 소설’이 선택되었다라고 본다. 이러한 ‘황순원 소설’이 다매체로 변용되어 제작되는 기본 요소에는 무시간성, 중립적인 이데올로기, 간결하고 응축된 문체 그리고 대중적 요소를 꼽을 수 있다. 영화나 TV드라마 이외에도, 꾸준히 주목받고 있는 <소나기>에 ‘황순원 소설’의 기본 요소가 잘 드러나기 때문에 이를 살펴보려고 한다.

        Charles Bonnet Syndrome Following Trans-Sphenoidal Adenomectomy without Optic Nerve Atrophy

        Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) can develop after trans-sphenoidal adenomectomy (TSA); however, the neural mechanisms remain unknown. Sensory deprivation and releasing phenomenon are both hypothetical explanations for this condition; however, there is no definite evidence that strongly supports either supposition. We report the first case of CBS after TSA without optic nerve atrophy. Postoperatively, the patient’s vision seemed to be relatively well preserved, apart from the left-side hemianopsia in the right eye. Distinctive visual hallucinations only appeared when his eyes were closed, and these responded to quetiapine in a dose-dependent manner. Dose dependent change in colors and formation of hallucination was reported. Two weeks after quetiapine initiation, the patient’s CBS was completely resolved. This unique case suggests that blocking sensory input from the periphery is more critical than neural damage of the bottom-up connection to the visual association cortex. In addition, quetiapine should be considered as a specific treatment for CBS.
