First cavernicolous record of the holoparasitic Balanophora abbreviata Blume (Balanophoraceae), from Tayabas, Quezon, Philippines

        Ivy Amor F. Lambio,Marnelli S. Alviola,Cristian C. Lucañas,Aimee Lynn A. Barrion-Dupo,Camille Faith D. Duran,Ma. Francia Kyla M. Cammayo,Kirk J. Taray,Orlando L. Eusebio,Ireneo L. Lit Jr. 국립중앙과학관 2024 Journal of Asia-Pacific Biodiversity Vol.17 No.1

A new record of a holoparasitic plant is hereby reported to thrive in the twilight zone of Dry Cave I,Tayabas, Quezon Province, Philippines. This is the first record of a Balanophora species thriving withincave ecosystems. Based on the observed production of white sap from the roots inside the cave and apreliminary survey of trees above the cave, the probable host of the Balanophora abbreviata is Ficus sp. (Moraceae). Fig trees are capable of producing deeply penetrating and lithophytic roots. Based on theexistence of various arthropods in and within the vicinity of the plant clumps, the possible role ofB. abbreviata as part of the food web within Dry Cave I is also discussed.

      • Health Promoting Behaviors of Pregnant Women

Ivy Lynne Bejerano 계명대학교 간호과학연구소 2013 계명간호과학 Vol.17 No.1

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of demographic profile of pregnant women with six dimensions of Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP-II). Methods: A non-experimental descriptive correlation design was utilized, 35 pregnant women in poor communities in Manila, Philippines were selected using purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using correlational analysis with Spearman's rank-order correlation. Results: Majority (57.1%) are in their second decade of life (20-29), 40% completed high school, a significant 45.7% has a gravida of 2, mostly were married accounting to 65.7% and 65.7% of total study population barely earn Php 5000 monthly. Analysis revealed moderate level of health promoting behaviors of pregnant women having interpersonal relations of 2.8(0.48) and spiritual growth of 2.76 (0.53) as the highly recognized dimension of the subjects. Correlating demographic variables such as maternal age, educational attainment, gravida, income and civil status, income showed statistical significance with dimensions of health responsibility and physical activity. Conclusion: Health care professionals should recognize that mothers may have necessary knowledge on health promoting activities but may be constrained to engaging because of economic limitations. Consideration on economic capacity should be initiated along with care intervention options available for pregnant women.

      • Effectiveness of Kangaroo Mother care in Low Birth Weight Infants

Ivy Lynne Bejerano 계명대학교 간호과학연구소 2013 계명간호과학 Vol.17 No.1

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) compared to Conventional Method Care (CMC) in improving physiologic outcomes of low birth weight (LBW) infants across diverse culture. Methods: Published randomized controlled trial studies from 1997 - 2007 were searched using CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed and Cochrane showing the effects of KMC. Meta - analysis was carried out using calculation of Relative Risk (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI), mean and effect size for dichotomous and continuous outcomes. Results: 6 out of 14 studies qualified for inclusion criteria. The use of KMC showed improvement in oxygen saturation, daily weight gain and length of hospital stay (effect sizes of 1.28, 0.54 and 0.18, respectively). 2 out of 6 studies showed significant result in improving body temperature and anthropometric measurements such as head circumference and length (effect size 0.48 and 0.32). KMC was found to be associated with decreasing mortality rate among infants. Conclusion: The evidence from this study supports the use of KMC in improving the physiologic outcomes and decrease the mortality rate among LBW infants. Further interventional studies are recommended to evaluate the effects of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) among premature infants.

Impact of Diet Containing Grape Pomace on Growth Performance and Blood Lipid Profile of Young Rats

        Ivy Smith,Jianmei Yu,Steven L. Hurley,Tracy Hanner 한국식품영양과학회 2017 Journal of medicinal food Vol.20 No.6

Grape pomace (GP), the residue of grapes after wine making, is rich in dietary polyphenols and fiber, and it has potential to serve as a functional food ingredient to improve health. However, high polyphenol diets have also been reported to inhibit the growth of young animals and cause liver necrosis. This study investigated the effect of diets containing different amounts of GP on the growth performance and blood lipid profile by using a young rat model. Twenty female Sprague–Dawley rats of age 7 weeks were randomly divided into four groups that were fed AIN-93G diets that were modified by substituting 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% of carbohydrate with GP for 10 weeks (the diets, thus, obtained contained 0%, 6.9%, 13.8%, and 20.7% of GP). The group fed original AIN-93G (0% GP) was used as control. Feed consumption, body weight, length, and height were recorded weekly. Blood samples were taken biweekly to analyze plasma lipid profile. At the end of the feeding period, the rats were fasted overnight and euthanized by exsanguination under anesthesia. Livers, hearts, and kidneys were collected, and their weights were recorded. Results show that the diet containing a maximum of 20.7% of GP did not influence the body weights, lengths, and heights of rats. As the GP content increased, the blood triglyceride and very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) decreased, the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) increased slightly but were statistically significant, and total cholesterol remained constant. In conclusion, GP in the AIN-93G diet did not influence the growth performance of young rats, but it exhibited both positive and negative effects on the blood lipid profile.

Evolution of Diabetes Care in Hong Kong: From the Hong Kong Diabetes Register to JADE-PEARL Program to RAMP and PEP Program

        Ivy H.Y. Ng,Kitty K.T. Cheung,Tiffany T.L. Yau,Elaine Chow,Risa Ozaki,Juliana CN Chan 대한내분비학회 2018 Endocrinology and metabolism Vol.33 No.1

The rapid increase in diabetes prevalence globally has contributed to large increases in health care expenditure on diabetic complications, posing a major health burden to countries worldwide. Asians are commonly observed to have poorer β-cell function and greaterinsulin resistance compared to the Caucasian population, which is attributed by their lower lean body mass and central obesity. This “double phenotype” as well as the rising prevalence of young onset diabetes in Asia has placed Asians with diabetes at high riskof cardiovascular and renal complications, with cancer emerging as an important cause of morbidity and mortality. The experiencefrom Hong Kong had demonstrated that a multifaceted approach, involving team-based integrated care, information technologicaladvances, and patient empowerment programs were able to reduce the incidence of diabetic complications, hospitalizations, andmortality. System change and public policies to enhance implementation of such programs may provide solutions to combat the burgeoninghealth problem of diabetes at a societal level.

Dynamic Load Balancing and Network Adaptive Virtual Storage Service for Mobile Appliances

( Ivy Ong ),( Hyo Taek Lim ) 한국정보처리학회 2011 Journal of information processing systems Vol.7 No.1

With the steady growth of mobile technology and applications, demand for more storage in mobile devices has also increased. A lightweight block-level protocol, Internet Advanced Technology Attachment (iATA), has been developed to deliver a cost-effective storage network solution for mobile devices to obtain more storage. This paper seeks to contribute to designing and implementing Load Balancing (LB), Network Monitoring (NM) and Write Replication (WR) modules to improve the protocol`s scalability and data availability. LB and NM modules are invoked to collect system resources states and current network status at each associate node (server machine). A dynamic weight factor is calculated based on the collected information and sent to a referral server. The referral server is responsible to analyze and allocate the most ideal node with the least weight to serve the client. With this approach, the client can avoid connecting to a heavily loaded node that may cause delays in subsequent in-band I/O operations. Write replication is applied to the remaining nodes through a WR module by utilizing the Unison file synchronization program. A client initially connected to node IP A for write operations will have no hindrances in executing the relevant read operations at node IP B in new connections. In the worst case scenario of a node crashing, data remain recoverable from other functioning nodes. We have conducted several benchmark tests and our results are evaluated and verified in a later section.
