Tourmaline as versatile additive to improve the performance of thin-film composite forward osmosis membrane

        Zhang Feng,Wang Yaqin,Miao Wenfei,Liu Zhaoming,Oh Won-Chun 한국세라믹학회 2022 한국세라믹학회지 Vol.59 No.5

Modified tourmaline (TM) minerals were prepared using hydrothermal method, followed by surface coating with sorbitan monostearate (SPAN-60), as well as characterization of FTIR, XRD, zeta potential, and antibacterial property analysis. The as-synthesized TM particles were incorporated with polyethersulfone (PES) substrate of thin-film composite forward osmosis (TFC-FO) membrane for alleviated structural resistance and biofouling tendency based on two different approaches, polymer blending into and polymer coating onto the inorganic deposited layer, respectively. To investigate the micromorphology of the prepared membranes, SEM was used to obtain the surface and cross-section images, and elemental mapping with EDS was applied to analyze the dispersion state of TM particles in PES matrix. In comparison to the control membrane, the water flux in FO mode of the nanocomposite membranes significantly increased with TM loading content, which is attributed to the optimization of microstructure and enhancement of inner osmotic pressure resulted from the ions released by TM. More importantly, the results showed TM endowed antibacterial activity in the membrane when TM deposited layer combined with the bottom surface of substrate. It is confirmed by our work that TM is a versatile additive for FO membrane with high performance.

Optimization of the Structural Parameters of the Vertical Trabeculae Beetle Elytron Plate Based on the Mechanical and Thermal Insulation Properties

        Zhijie Zhang,Elbashiry Mohamed Adam Elsafi,Jinxiang Chen,Peixing Wei,Yaqin Fu 대한토목학회 2020 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.24 No.12

According to the excellent structure of the beetle elytron plate (BEP), a new type of bionic prefabricated wallboard with vertical trabeculae and honeycomb walls (the vertical trabeculae beetle elytron plate: VBEPsc) was proposed. The relationships between the main structural parameters, including the concrete frame thickness (T), honeycomb wall thickness (t), trabecula number (N) and trabecular radius (R), and the performance of the VBEPsc were analyzed. In addition, to improve the mechanical and insulation performance of the VBEPsc, an initial optimal design was determined. The results showed that 1) in addition to the mechanical properties of the VBEPsc being mainly affected by T, as is known, N had an apparent impact on the stiffness of the VBEPsc; the insulation performance was affected greatly by T, N, and t. 2) Under the given conditions, the mechanical properties of the optimized VBEPsc met the requirements for bearing capacities and serviceability; The insulation performance of the optimized VBEPsc met the requirements for self-insulating walls of category II buildings in areas that are cold in winter and hot in summer. In addition, a double-layer mold and complete production technology for VBEPsc were proposed. These works started a discussion for the application of such prefabricated wallboards.

Optimization of Nobiletin Extraction Assisted by Microwave from Orange Byproduct Using Response Surface Methodology

        Yu Zhang,Hong-Jun Li,Huating Dou,Zhi-Fei He,Houjiu Wu,Zhigao Sun,Hua Wang,Xuegen Huang,Yaqin Ma 한국식품과학회 2013 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.22 No.suppl1

Nobiletin (NOB) is a well-known polymethoxylated flavone that has only been found in citrus. The objective of this study is to obtain the optimal conditions for extracting nobiletin from sweet orange residues by microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) using response surface method. By using the Box-Behnken experimental design and SAS software 3 independent variables including solid/solvent ratio, microwave power, and treatment time were examined for the response variable nobiletin extraction yield. The regression Eq. 7 statistically significant (p<0.001) and R2 was 0.9189. Based on our regression result and considering the feasibility of experiment conduction, we chose the following independent variable values as the optimized conditions for the extraction of NOB: 1:21.91(g/mL) for the solid/solvent ratio, 14.16 min for the treatment time, and 693.72 W for the microwave power. Under these conditions, the nobiletin yield of 267.8 μg/g of byproduct was achieved.

Stress field interference of hydraulic fractures in layered formation

        Zhu, Haiyan,Zhang, Xudong,Guo, Jianchun,Xu, Yaqin,Chen, Li,Yuan, Shuhang,Wang, Yonghui,Huang, Jingya Techno-Press 2015 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.9 No.5

Single treatment and staged treatments in vertical wells are widely applied in sandstone and mudstone thin interbedded (SMTI) reservoir to stimulate the reservoir. The keys and difficulties of stimulating this category of formations are to avoid hydraulic fracture propagating through the interface between shale and sand as well as control the fracture height. In this paper, the cohesive zone method was utilized to build the 3-dimensional fracture dynamic propagation model in shale and sand interbedded formation based on the cohesive damage element. Staged treatments and single treatment were simulated by single fracture propagation model and double fractures propagation model respectively. Study on the changes of fracture vicinity stress field during propagation is to compare and analyze the parameters which influence the interfacial induced stresses between two different fracturing methods. As a result, we can prejudge how difficult it is that the fracture propagates along its height direction. The induced stress increases as the pumping rate increasing and it changes as a parabolic function of the fluid viscosity. The optimized pump rate is $4.8m^3/min$ and fluid viscosity is $0.1Pa{\cdot}s$ to avoid the over extending of hydraulic fracture in height direction. The simulation outcomes were applied in the field to optimize the treatment parameters and the staged treatments was suggested to get a better production than single treatment.

It is Time to Have Rest: How do Break Types Affect Muscular Activity and Perceived Discomfort During Prolonged Sitting Work

Ding, Yi,Cao, Yaqin,Duffy, Vincent G.,Zhang, Xuefeng Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute 2020 Safety and health at work Vol.11 No.2

Background: Prolonged sitting at work can lead to adverse health outcomes. The health risk of office workers is an increasing concern for the society and industry, with prolonged sitting work becoming more prevalent. Objective: This study aimed to explore the variation in muscle activities during prolonged sitting work and found out when and how to take a break to mitigate the risk of muscle symptoms. Methods: A preliminary survey was conducted to find out the prevalence of muscle discomfort in sedentary work. Firstly, a 2-h sedentary computer work was designed based on the preliminary study to investigate the variation in muscle activities. Twenty-four participants took part in the electromyography (EMG) measurement study. The EMG variations in the trapezius muscle and latissimus dorsi were investigated. Then the intervention time was determined based on the EMG measurement study. Secondly, 48 participants were divided into six groups to compare the effectiveness of every break type (passive break, active break of changing their posture, and stand and stretch their body with 5 or 10 mins). Finally, data consisting of EMG amplitudes and spectra and subjective assessment of discomfort were analyzed. Results: In the EMG experiment, results from the joint analysis of the spectral and amplitude method showed muscle fatigue after about 40 mins of sedentary work. In the intervention experiment, the results showed that standing and stretching for 5 mins was the most effective break type, and this type of break could keep the muscles' state at a recovery level for about 30-45 mins. Conclusions: This study offers the possibility of being applied to office workers and provides preliminary data support and theoretical exploration for a follow-up early muscle fatigue detection system.

Attenuation of Aortic Injury by Ursolic Acid through RAGE-Nox-NFκB Pathway in Streptozocin-induced Diabetic Rats

        Min Xiang,Jianmei Wang,Yaqin Zhang,Jing Ling,Xiaoyue Xu 대한약학회 2012 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.35 No.5

Vascular complications are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in diabetes mellitus (DM). The RAGE (receptor for advanced glycation end products)-NADPH oxidase-NF-κB signal transduction pathway plays an important role in the development of oxidative stressrelated vascular complications in DM. Ursolic acid (UA), a pentacyclic triterpenoid derived from plants, has been reported to have multiple pharmacological effects, including a potent antioxidant activity. This study aimed to investigate both the effect of UA on aortic injury in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats and the drug’s mechanism of action. STZ-induced diabetic animals were randomized in one of the following 4 groups: no treatment (diabetic model group), aminoguanidine (AG, 100 mg/kg), high-dose UA (50 mg/kg), and low-dose UA (25 mg/kg). A non-diabetic control group was followed concurrently. After 8 weeks, the diabetic model rats exhibited: severe aortic arch injury, histologically elevated serum glucose, fructosamine, and glycosylated hemoglobin; and accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in the arota. In addition, the levels of RAGE protein, transcription factor NF-κB p65, and the p22phox subunit of NADPH oxidase were increased, as were the serum levels of malondialdehyde and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α; p < 0.01 vs control), suggesting that the mechanisms of oxidative stress contributed to vascular injury in the diabetic model group. In contrast, rats treated with UA (50 mg/kg) had a markedly less vascular injury and significantly improved biochemical parameters. Oxidative balance was also normalized in the UAtreated rats, and a marked reduction in the levels of RAGE and p22phox paralleled the reduced activation of NF-κB p65 and TNF-α (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively, vs diabetic model). These findings suggest that UA may suppress oxidative stress, thus blunting activation of the RAGE-NADPH oxidase-NF-κB signal transduction pathway, to ameliorate vascular injury in the STZ-induced DM rats.

Development of Enzymatic Recombinase Amplification Assays for the Rapid Visual Detection of HPV16/18

        Ding Ning,Qi Wanwan,Wu Zihan,Zhang Yaqin,Xu Ruowei,Lin Qiannan,Zhu Jin,Zhang Huilin 한국미생물·생명공학회 2023 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.33 No.8

Human papillomavirus (HPV) types 16 and 18 are the major causes of cervical lesions and are associated with 71% of cervical cancer cases globally. However, public health infrastructures to support cervical cancer screening may be unavailable to women in low-resource areas. Therefore, sensitive, convenient, and cost-efficient diagnostic methods are required for the detection of HPV16/18. Here, we designed two novel methods, real-time ERA and ERA-LFD, based on enzymatic recombinase amplification (ERA) for quick point-of-care identification of the HPV E6/E7 genes. The entire detection process could be completed within 25 min at a constant low temperature (35–43°C), and the results of the combined methods could be present as the amplification curves or the bands presented on dipsticks and directly interpreted with the naked eye. The ERA assays evaluated using standard plasmids carrying the E6/E7 genes and clinical samples exhibited excellent specificity, as no cross-reaction with other common HPV types was observed. The detection limits of our ERA assays were 100 and 101 copies/μl for HPV16 and 18 respectively, which were comparable to those of the real-time PCR assay. Assessment of the clinical performance of the ERA assays using 114 cervical tissue samples demonstrated that they are highly consistent with real-time PCR, the gold standard for HPV detection. This study demonstrated that ERA-based assays possess excellent sensitivity, specificity, and repeatability for HPV16 and HPV18 detection with great potential to become robust diagnostic tools in local hospitals and field studies.
