A number of studies have demonstrated that 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) can induce muscle contraction or relaxation response and enhance secretion in the gastrointestinal tract via a multiplicity of 5-HT receptor subtypes. In the present study, we investigated the pharmacological characterization of the 5-HT-induced contractile response in longitudinal smooth muscle isolated from the feline ileum. Addition of 5-HT into muscle chambers enhanced the basal tone and spontaneous activity in a concentration-dependent manner. The neurotoxin tetrodotoxin did not alter the 5-HT-induced contraction of the longitudinal muscles. Neither atropine nor guanethidine affected the contraction. The 5-HT agonists, 5-methylserotonin hydrochloride and mosapride, also evoked concentration-dependent contractions. The 5-HT-induced contraction was enhanced by the 5HT2 receptor antagonist ketanserin and the 5-HT3 receptor antagonist ondansetron but was inhibited by the 5-HT1 receptor antagonist methysergide and 5-HT4 receptor antagonist GR113808. These results indicate that 5-HT1 and 5-HT4 receptors may mediate the contraction of the 5-HT-induced response and 5-HT2 and 5-HT3 receptors may mediate 5-HT-induced relaxation in feline ileal longitudinal smooth muscles.

Sprites, elves and blue jets are collectively denominated as the upper atmospheric transient luminous events (TLEs). They are recently discovered optical flashes between active thunderstorms and the ionosphere. In this report, a brief introduction to the most important characteristics of TLEs is given. Since 2001, scientists from the National Cheng Kung University have been performing yearly summer campaigns from various locations in Taiwan. The main achievements of their yearly campaign are presented.

Objective: We wanted to evaluate the impact of two reconstruction algorithms (halfscan and multisector) on the image quality and the accuracy of measuring the severity of coronary stenoses by using a pulsating cardiac phantom with different heart rates (HRs). Materials and Methods: Simulated coronary arteries with different stenotic severities (25, 50, 75%) and different luminal diameters (3, 4, 5 mm) were scanned with a fixed pitch of 0.16 and a 0.35 second gantry rotation time on a 64-slice multidetector CT. Both reconstruction algorithms (halfscan and multisector) were applied to HRs of 40-120 beats per minute (bpm) at 10 bpm intervals. Three experienced radiologists visually assessed the image quality and they manually measured the stenotic severity. Results: Fewer measurement errors occurred with multisector reconstruction (p = 0.05), a slower HR (p < 0.001) and a larger luminal diameter (p = 0.014); measurement errors were not related with the observers or the stenotic severity. There was no significant difference in measurements as for the reconstruction algorithms below an HR of 70 bpm. More nonassessable segments were visualized with halfscan reconstruction (p = 0.004) and higher HRs (p < 0.001). Halfscan reconstruction had better quality scores when the HR was below 60 bpm, while multisector reconstruction had better quality scores when the HR was above 90 bpm. For the HRs between 60 and 90 bpm, both reconstruction modes had similar quality scores. With excluding the nonassessable segments, both reconstruction algorithms achieved a similar mean measured stenotic severity and similar standard deviations. Conclusion: At a higher HR (above 90 bpm), multisector reconstruction had better temporal resolution, fewer nonassessable segments, better quality scores and better accuracy of measuring the stenotic severity in this phantom study. Intraday Volatility Patterns in the Taiwan Stock Market and the Impact on Volatility Forecasting
Yun-Yi Wang,Yaw-Huei Wang 한국증권학회 2010 Asia-Pacific Journal of Financial Studies Vol.39 No.1
Given the growing importance of the Taiwan stock market, the present study sets out to provide a comprehensive investigation of the intraday time series of the Taiwan Stock Exchange Capitalization Weighted Stock Index (TAIEX). We begin by exploring the intraday volatility patterns and then go on to examine their impact on intraday volatility forecasting. We find that the volatility of the TAIEX returns exhibits an L-shaped intraday periodic pattern, which is distinct across each day of the week. Our empirical results indicate that taking the intraday periodic pattern into account in a generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity model can substantially improve the precision of intraday volatility forecasting.
The Study of the Paternalistic Leadership Style: A Case Study of a Kindergarten Principal
Yi-Yun Wang,Yu-Wei Lin 환태평양유아교육연구학회 2007 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhoo Vol.1 No.2
This study aimed to explore the leading behaviors of kindergarten principals from a local perspective by conducting a case study, so as to get a better understanding of the role played by the concepts and conduct of the leader during the process of improving education quality. The study was based on data collected between March 2004 and March 2005. Research methods included participant observation, formal and informal interviews. Besides, parent handbooks, teaching plan designs, and parent-teacher meeting communication documents have also been collected for documentation anal- ysis. The results finds that the leadership concepts and behaviors of a kindergarten principal are present in four aspects, which are “Demonstration of austerity and au- thority”, “Showing Care and Kindness”, “Appreciation of professional ethics and moral” and “Emphasis on personal image”. The essence of the first three aspects cor- responds to the elements in “Paternalistic Leadership”, which are indicated in studies on Chinese organizations done in recent years. As to the last aspect, it echoes the issue of “face-saving” emphasized by the Chinese people.
