Acupressure Bead in the Eustachian Tube
Yu Matsumoto,Kazunori Igarashi,Akinobu Kakigi 사단법인약침학회 2015 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.8 No.4
In this article, we aim to enlighten practitioners and patients involved with acupressure beads and to contribute to their safer use by reporting a unique case of insidious intrusion of an acupressure bead into the eustachian tube. A metallic object was found in the eustachian tube of a patient while conducting a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination. The object was later confirmed to be an auricular acupressure bead, and was successfully removed by performing a tympanoplasty and a canal wall down mastoidectomy. The bead was assumed to have passed through an existing perforation of the tympanic membrane. According to previously published literature, tympanic membrane perforations exist in ∼1% of the population. Therefore, middle-ear foreign bodies are relatively common occurrences for otolaryngologists. However, metallic objects such as acupressure beads are especially important in the sense that they can cause severe burns during MRI. To avoid potential complications, acupressure-bead practitioners should be aware of the possibility that intrusions through the tympanic membrane could go unnoticed.

<P>Turn 'off-on' chemosensor 2-(-2-((3',6'-bis(diethylamino)-3-oxospiro[isoindoline-1,9'-xanthen]-2-yl)imino)ethylidene)-N-phenylhydrazine-1-carbothioamide (RBS) was designed and synthesized. Using the naked eye, RBS showed favorable observation characteristics with both Cu2+ and F- ions. The various modes of sensitivity shown by RBS toward the Cu2+ and F- ions were investigated by spectral techniques, including UV-Vis, fluorescence and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The Job's plot indicated the formation of 1:1 complex between RBS and Cu2+/F-. The binding constant of the RBS-guest(-) complexes were found to be 1.3 x 10(4) and 6.2 x 10(3) M-1 for the RBS-Cu2+ and RBS-F-, respectively. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.</P>
Experimental Evaluation of Optical ZCZ-CDMA System
Yu Suwaki,Takahiro Matsumoto,Shinya Matsufuji 대한전자공학회 2008 ITC-CSCC :International Technical Conference on Ci Vol.2008 No.7
The optical ZCZ code, which is a set of pairs of binary and bi-phase sequences with zero correlation zone, can provide optical code division multiple access (CDMA) communication system without co-channel interference. We proposed the compact construction of a code generator and a bank of matched filters for this code. This paper gives and evaluates an optical ZCZ-CDMA wireless communication system, consisting of a infrared light emitting diode(LED), an avalanche photo diode(APD) module and field programmable gate array(FPGA) boards corresponding to 400, 000 logic gates.
Inhaled Corticosteroid and Secondary Glaucoma: A Meta-analysis of 18 Studies
Ishii Mai,Horita Nobuyuki,Takeuchi Masaki,Matsumoto Hiromi,Ebina-Shibuya Risa,Hara Yu,Kobayashi Nobuaki,Mizuki Nobuhisa,Kaneko Takeshi 대한천식알레르기학회 2021 Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research Vol.13 No.3
Purpose Guidelines and systematic reviews frequently warn of inhaled corticosteroid (ICS)-induced glaucoma. However, most of the published studies deny it. Methods We performed a systematic review of randomized, cohort, nested-case control, cross-sectional studies by using Meta-analyses of Observational Studies in Epidemiology statement. Four major databases, PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Search Manager, and the Web of Science Core Collection as well as meta-analysis were used. Studies comparing incidence, prevalence and intraocular pressure (IOP) between patients who were treated with and without ICSs were included. A random-model meta-analysis was performed using the inverse variance method. Results Out of 623 studies screened, 18 with 31,665 subjects were finally included. No significant difference between the 2 groups was observed for crude glaucoma incidence (odds ratio [OR], 0.95; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.86–1.04; P = 0.26; I 2 = 0%; P for heterogeneity = 0.57) as a primary endpoint, adjusted glaucoma incidence (OR, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.65–1.24; P = 0.64), crude prevalence (OR, 1.82; 95% CI, 0.23–14.19; P = 0.57), adjusted prevalence (OR, 1.22; 95% CI, 0.50–2.96; P = 0.66), IOP change during ICS treatment (mean difference [MD] +0.01 mmHg; 95% CI, −0.19–0.20; P = 0.95), and single measurement IOP (MD +0.37 mmHg; 95% CI, −0.24–0.97; P = 0.23). Time-to-event analysis for glaucoma development as one of the secondary endpoints (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.52; 95% CI, 0.28–0.96) suggested a reverse association between ICS and glaucoma. Conclusions The ophthalmological side effects of ICSs, such as glaucoma and intraocular hypertension, should not be exaggerated.
Defective natural killer cell activity in a mouse model of eczema herpeticum

<P><B>Background</B></P> <P>Patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) are susceptible to several viruses, including herpes simplex virus (HSV). Some patients experience 1 or more episodes of a severe skin infection caused by HSV termed eczema herpeticum (EH). There are numerous mouse models of AD, but no established model exists for EH.</P> <P><B>Objective</B></P> <P>We sought to establish and characterize a mouse model of EH.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>We infected AD-like skin lesions with HSV1 to induce severe skin lesions in a dermatitis-prone mouse strain of NC/Nga. Gene expression was investigated by using a microarray and quantitative PCR; antibody titers were measured by means of ELISA; and natural killer (NK) cell, cytotoxic T-cell, regulatory T-cell, and follicular helper T-cell populations were evaluated by using flow cytometry. The role of NK cells in HSV1-induced development of severe skin lesions was examined by means of depletion and adoptive transfer.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>Inoculation of HSV1 induced severe erosive skin lesions in eczematous mice, which had an impaired skin barrier, but milder lesions in small numbers of normal mice. Eczematous mice exhibited lower NK cell activity but similar cytotoxic T-cell activity and humoral immune responses compared with normal mice. The role of NK cells in controlling HSV1-induced skin lesions was demonstrated by experiments depleting or transferring NK cells.</P> <P><B>Conclusion</B></P> <P>A murine model of EH with an impaired skin barrier was established in this study.
