Cellular prion protein, a membrane protein, is expressed in all mammals. Prion protein is also found in human blood as an anchorless protein, and this protein form is one of the many potential sources of misfolded prion protein replication during transmission. Many studies have suggested that b-amyloid1–42 oligomer causes neurotoxicity associated with Alzheimer’s disease, which is mediated by the prion protein that acts as a receptor and regulates the hippocampal potentiation. The prevention of the binding of these proteins has been proposed as a possible preventative treatment for Alzheimer’s disease;therefore, a greater understanding of the binding hot-spots between the two molecules is necessary. In this study, the epitope mapping immunoassay was employed to characterize binding epitopes within the prion protein and complementary epitopes in b-amyloid. Residues 23–39 and 93–119 in the prion protein were involved in binding to b-amyloid1–40 and 1–42, and monomers of this protein interacted with prion protein residues 93–113 and 123–166. Furthermore, b-amyloid antibodies against the C-terminus detected bound b-amyloid1–42 at residues 23–40, 104–122 and 159–175. b-Amyloid epitopes necessary for the interaction with prion protein were not determined. In conclusion, charged clusters and hydrophobic regions of the prion protein were involved in binding to b-amyloid1–40 and 1–42. The 3D structure appears to be necessary for b-amyloid to interact with prion protein. In the future, these binding sites may be utilized for 3D structure modeling, as well as for the pharmaceutical intervention of Alzheimer’s disease.

The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing the Exercise Performance of elderly patients with diabetes. The subjects were 153 elderly patients with diabetes who were selected from the public health center in Gwang ju. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and stepwise multiple regression. This study found that approximately 52.9% of the subjects were exercising regulary. Exercise performance was significantly different according to education level, family income by month, and level of diabetes education. Significant factors influencing exercise performance were exercise self-efficacy, exercise social support and exercise benefits. The most powerful predictor of exercise performance was exercise self-efficacy(34.2%). This study suggests that nurses should emphasize exercise social support. and exercise benefits as well as reinforce exercise self-efficacy to improve exercise performance of the elderly patients with diabetes.

슬관절의 반월상 연골내 소골은 반월상 연골조직 내에 발생한 골조직으로, 사람에게서는 매우 드문 것으로 보고되고 있다. 저자들은 특별한 외상의 병력 없이 기립 시 발생하는 슬관절통과 간헐적인 잠김증상을 보이는 48세 남자에서 관절경상 내측 반월상 연골 후방 경골 부착부 파열을 동반한 반월상 연골내 소골과 대퇴내과 연골손상으로 관절경적 절제술 및 미세천공술을 시행한 1예를 경험하였기에 문헌고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다. Meniscal ossicle of the knee, an ossified tissue formed within the meniscus, is rare in humans. We experienced a case of a 48-yearold male with no history of trauma, who presented with intermittent locking symptoms and knee pain upon standing. The patient was diagnosed with meniscal ossicle and cartilage lesion in the medial femoral condyle accompanied by a medial meniscus posterior horn radial tear and treated with arthroscopic resection and microfracture. Therefore, we report on this case with relevant literature.

Purpose: Vitamin D deficiency is a condition widespread throughout the world. Recent studies have suggested that vitamin D deficiency was associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in adolescents. Methods: The data were obtained from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2008–2014. A total of 3,878 adolescents were included in the study. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as a 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration <20 ng/mL and suspected NAFLD was defined as an alanine transaminase concentration >30 U/L. Results: Vitamin D deficiency was noted in 78.9% of the studied population. Age, body mass index, waist circumference, and blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels were significantly higher in adolescents with suspected NAFLD than in adolescents without suspected NAFLD, while the mean vitamin D level was significantly lower in adolescents with suspected NAFLD. The multivariate-adjusted odds of suspected NAFLD were higher with increased age, male gender, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. Individuals with vitamin D deficiency were at higher risk of suspected NAFLD (odds ratio, 1.77; 95% confidence interval, 1.07–2.95) after adjusting for age, gender, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency was associated with suspected NAFLD, independent of obesity and metabolic syndrome, in adolescents.
Proteomic Changes in Odae Polished White Rice Grown at Different Cultivation Conditions

It has been known that the proteome profiles in the period of growth and development of rice are changed by the growth conditions including temperature, soil, and fertilization. In this study, the proteome profiles of Odae polished white rice grown in Chulwon and Chilgog were compared on 2-dimensional(D) gels. The differentially expressed proteins were selected from the 112 identified total proteins and classified into functional groups. The most significantly differentially expressed proteins were stress responsive proteins; Ent-kaur-16-ene synthase, which is responsible for synthesizing a plant hormone gibberellin, was expressed in Chulwon rice and heat shock proteins were in Chilgog rice, respectively. Xylanase inhibitor protein, which inhibits the enzyme xylanase produced by pathogenic fungi and Bacilli, was expressed significantly high in Chilgog rice grown at high temperature. Differential expressions of transporter proteins were observed both in Chulwon and Chilgog rice. Regarding the facts that Chilgog rice contained relatively higher amount of proteins than Chulwon rice and Chulwon rice showed large number of proteins were differentially expressed, it can be concluded that different cultivation conditions could change the protein expression profiles in rice in various ways, including elevation of protein amount or differential expressions of specific proteins, etc. The results suggest that the characteristics of the profiles of the proteome in the polished white rice are definitely changed by the environmental factors including high temperature. The results can be utilized for the development of the proper cultivation conditions for the production of high quality rice with good palatability.
Wilson Disease Comorbid with Hereditary Sensory Autonomic Neuropathy Type IV and Gitelman Syndrome

Wilson disease a rare autosomal recessive inherited disorder of copper metabolism, is characterized by excessive deposition of copper in the liver, brain, and other tissues. Wilson disease is often fatal if it is not recognized early and treated when it is symptomatic. Gitelman syndrome is also an autosomal recessive kidney disorder characterized by low blood levels of potassium and magnesium, decreased excretion of calcium in the urine, and elevated blood pH. Hereditary sensory autonomic neuropathy type IV (HSAN-IV), a very rare condition that presents in infancy, is characterized by anhidrosis, absence of pain sensation, and selfmutilation. It is usually accompanied by developmental delay and mental retardation. We report a case of Wilson disease manifested as fulminant hepatitis, acute pancreatitis, and acute kidney injury in a 15-year-old boy comorbid with HSAN-IV and Gitelman syndrome. Such concurrence of three genetic diseases is an extremely rare case.
