An Architecture of Scalable ATM Switching System and Its Call Processing Capacity Estimation

In this paper, we define the general requirements of ATM switching systems such as scalability, distributed fashion, and modularity. Also we propose a practical implementation of a scalable ATM switching system whose capacity can be easily expanded. Firstly, the architecture of the system is discussed with an emphasis on system scalability, modularity of subsystems and the simple control network of the design requirements. Secondly, we suggest the three types of distributed call/connection control schemes that are suitable for our switching system. We also estimate their call processing capacity on the average and make a comparison of them under the various system architectures. Since our scalable switching system can be constructed to perform the call processing functions on the various levels of the system capacity, it has much adaptability at the various evolution phases or regions of the network environment.

Background/Aims: The reactivation of telomerase may be concomitant with the cell immortality and mutations of the K-ras gene are common genetic alteration found in pancreatic carcinomas. The purpose of this study was to determine the usefulness of the method using telomerase and K-ras mutation for the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Methods: Telomerase activity and K-ras mutation were examined using pancreatic juice collected during endoscopic retrograde pancreatography. Telomerase activity was detected by telomeric repeat amplication protocol method and K-ras mutation by polymerase chain reaction and direct sequencing. Results: Telomerase activities were detected in 91.7% of patients with pancreatic cancer and only in 18.2% of patients with chronic pancreatitis. Mutant K-ras genes were detected in 75% of patients with pancreatic cancer and 27.3% of patients with chronic pancreatitis. The sensitivity and specificity of the method using telomerase activity for detection of pancreatic cancer were 91.7% and 89.5%, respectively. The measurement of both telomerase activity and K-ras mutation increased the likelihood of early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Conclusions: The measurement of telomerase activity or K-ras mutation in pancreatic juice may be useful for the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, and the measurement of both telomerase activity and K-ras mutation is a specific method in discriminating cancer from benign pancreatic disease.

Phenolic compounds such as isoflavones contribute to the antioxidant properties of soybean. This study investigated differences in the phenolic content and antioxidant activity of ten soybean cultivars grown in two different locations in Korea. We observed a wide range of variation in total isoflavone and phenolic content by location and cultivar. The total isoflavone content of cultivars grown at Pyeongchang (sub-highland) was significantly higher than that in cultivars grown at Gangneung (lowland). In contrast, the total phenolic content of cultivars grown at Gangneung was greater than that of cultivars grown at Pyeongchang. The radical scavenging activity of DPPH was similar to that of the total phenolic content rather than that of the total isoflavone content. These results suggest that antioxidant activity of soybean was associated with phenolic compounds rather than isoflavones. To identify the individual antioxidant components, we used an on-line HPLC-$ABTS^+$-based assay system, ESI/MS, and NMR. The results showed that the strongest antioxidant activity was linked to epicatechin.
