Weizmannia coagulans (formerly Bacillus coagulans) is Gram-positive, and spore-forming bacteria causing food spoilage, especially in acidic canned food products. To control W. coagulans, we isolated a bacteriophage Youna2 from a sewage sludge sample. Morphological analysis revealed that phage Youna2 belongs to the Siphoviridae family with a non-contractile and flexible tail. Youna2 has 52,903 bp double-stranded DNA containing 61 open reading frames. There are no lysogenyrelated genes, suggesting that Youna2 is a virulent phage. plyYouna2, a putative endolysin gene was identified in the genome of Youna2 and predicted to be composed of a N-acetylmuramoyl-L-alanine amidase domain (PF01520) at the N-terminus and unknown function DUF5776 domain (PF19087) at the C-terminus. While phage Youna2 has a narrow host range, infecting only certain strains of W. coagulans, PlyYouna2 exhibited a broad antimicrobial spectrum beyond the Bacillus genus. Interestingly, PlyYouna2 can lyse Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Yersinia enterocolitica, Pseudomonas putida and Cronobacter sakazakii without other additives to destabilize bacterial outer membrane. To the best of our knowledge, Youna2 is the first W. coagulans-infecting phage and we speculate its endolysin PlyYouna2 can provide the basis for the development of a novel biocontrol agent against various foodborne pathogens.
Impacts of presenteeism on work-related injury absence and disease absence

Background: Many studies have been conducted on presenteeism and absenteeism, but the relationship between presenteeism and absenteeism is unclear. This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of presenteeism on future absenteeism. Methods: This study was conducted on non-white collar workers that underwent general health examinations in 2014 and 2015. We asked subjects to fill out a questionnaire about their experiences of presenteeism for the past one year in 2014. In 2015, it was checked whether the same subjects had any experience of absence from work due to injury or disease during the past year. The χ² test was used to analyze relationships between sociodemographic and occupational characteristics, presenteeism, and absence. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated by logistic regression analysis controlled for confounding factors. Results: A total of 12,572 workers were included in the study. For workers who experienced presenteeism, the OR for injury absence was 2.705 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.044–3.581), and the OR for disease absence was 4.906 (95% CI: 3.996–6.024) after adjusting for sociodemographic and occupational confounding factors. For men that experienced presenteeism, the OR for injury absence was 3.035 (95% CI: 2.258–4.081), and the OR for disease absence was 5.508 (95% CI: 4.340–6.989). For women that experienced presenteeism, the OR for injury absence was 1.322 (95% CI: 0.577–3.028), which was not significant, and the OR for disease absence was 3.629 (95% CI: 2.405–5.475). Conclusions: This study suggests that presenteeism can influence future absenteeism. The effect of presenteeism may depend on cause of absence. Men who experienced presenteeism showed greater effects on injury and disease absence than women. For women, experience of presenteeism had a significant effect on disease absence but not on injury absence.

Flexible composite films of V2O5 and conductive polypyrrole (V2O5/PPy) were grown by facile electrochemical polymerization, wherein an anodization potential was applied to the substrate electrode in an electrolyte solution containing pyrrole monomer and dispersed V2O5 particles. The coating of polypyrrole (PPy) on the surface of V2O5particles was induced by the oxidative catalytic action of V2O5 during the electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole. PPy in the composite film connects the isolated V2O5 particles. This results in the formation of conductive networks in the composite film cathode, thereby enhancing the Li+ ion diffusion to the surface of the isolated V2O5 particles and thus increasing the accessibility of the Li+ ions. The specific capacity tests of the Li rechargeable batteries revealed that the discharge capacity of this composite film cathode was higher, i.e., 497 mAhg-1, than that of V2O5/PPy powder or pristine V2O5.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We investigate a correlation between the type of solvent additives (SAs) with specific criteria such as aromatic additives (AAs) and non-aromatic additives (NAAs) and phase separation in the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) films comprising low-band gap polymer and fullerene derivatives. When AAs are used as SAs, the geometrical structures (π-π and lamellar stacking) of aggregated polymer chains do not significantly change. However, NAAs increase the lamellar stacking distance through a strong interaction with non-aromatic segments of polymers. Therefore, a well-phase separated BHJ morphology with the finer fibrils is developed, thereby leading to balanced charge mobilities and a reduced charge recombination in BHJ solar cells. Finally, the optimized solar cell exhibits a high power conversion efficiency of 7.9%.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We investigated the correlation between the phase separation in BHJ films and SA types with specific criteria (AAs and NAAs). </LI> <LI> A well-phase separated nano-morphology with balanced charge mobilities was obtained in the BHJ films processed with NAAs. </LI> <LI> This result would be helpful in determining suitable SAs for newly synthesized π-CP systems. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>The correlation between the type of solvent additives with specific criteria such as aromatic additives (AAs) and non-aromatic additives (NAAs) and phase separation in the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) films is investigated.
