Twenty four patients(21 males and 3 females) aged 14 to 70 years underwent 26 microvascular free tissue transfers in head and neck reconstructions from April 1990 to July 1992 (27 months) . Nineteen cases were tumors in head and neck area, and four were acquired deformities such as burn alopecia, burn scar contracture of the neck, Romberg disease and frontal sinus infection, and one was hemifaclal microsomia. The free flaps were executed successfully in 15 upper aerodigestive tracts, in 2 scalps and 3 skull bases and in contouring and resurfacing six facial and cervical lesions. The selection of donor site was bases upon the location of defect and the volume of tissue required : the forearm free flap was used in 11 cases, the rectus abdominis in 5, the groin in 2, the jejunum in 2, the occipital scalp in one, the first toe web space in one, the latissimus dorsi in one, the serratus anterior in one, the parietotemporalis fascia in one and the omentum in one. The free tissue transfers were primarily indicated in all patients in our series and there was no flap failure. The complications were minimal and the morbidities low. A free flap in the head and neck area is not only the most expedient method of reconstruction but also either the most reliable or the only available one in some clinical situations.

N/A Objective : Angiogenesis, the formation of blood vessels by sprouting from pre-existing ones, is essential for the growth of solid tumors beyond 2~3mm in diameter and for tumor metastasis. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), is known as vascular permeability factor(VPF) and mediates vascularization and tumor-induced angiogenesis. This study examined the potential of growth, invasion, and metastasis of uterine cervical carcinomas associated with neovascularization. Methods : From January 1996 to December 1999, at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Kyung-Hee University Hospital, 37 uterine cervical carcinomas and 7 normal cervical tissues were obtained and the samples were immediately frozen and stored at -70℃. Immunohistochemical staining for VEGF was carried out to study VEGF localization, and the levels of VEGF subtype mRNAs were determined by quantitative RT-PCR in specimens. The relation between VEGF subtypes expression of cervical cancers was analysed. Results : The positive staining for VEGF is seen dominantly in the cytoplasm of the cancer cells, and faintly in interstitial cells. The intensity of staining was stronger in squamous carcinomas than in adenocrcinomas, but there was no significant difference (p>0.05). Quantitative RT-PCR analysis demonstrated significantly increased VEGF121/VEGF165 mRNA expression levels (>0.56/>0.72) in 21 (56.8%) and 15 (40.5%) of 37 cervical carcinomas comparing to control groups (mean: 0.28/0.36). There was no obvious relationship between VEGF121/VEGF165 mRNA expression levels and the clinical parameters examined including age, pathology, differentiation, tumor size, lymphovascular space invasion, LN involvement and invasion depth except clinical stage (p<0.05). Conclusions : The overexpression of VEGF mRNA may be an important contributing factor in cervical carcinomas. There is no significant differenece of VEGF mRNAs levels according to clinical parameters, so it seems that the expression of VEGF is involved in the promotion of angiogenesis on cervical cancer and plays an important role in early invasion.

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) have been investigated intensively for some decades. These cells regulate the immune system, prevent overactivated immune responses and can be used therapeutically. For rheumatoid arthritis (RA), understanding the functions and status of Tregs is an important step for understanding immune regulation in this autoimmune disease. Methods: We investigated the percentages, phenotypes and suppressive functions of CD4+CD25+ Tregs in peripheral blood (PB) of patients with RA. Results: The percentages were higher in the patients (n=12) than in healthy controls (n=10), and the cells expressed the CD45RBlow, CTLA-4 and CCR7 phenotypes. We also investigated the expression of Foxp3 and secretion of interleukin (IL)-10 induced CD4+CD25+ Tcells by anti-CD3 antibody treatment. A suppressive function of the patients' cells was shown through coculture with CD4+CD25^- T cells in vitro. Conclusion: We suggest that, despite their increased numbers and suppressive function, they manage the ongoing inflammation ineffectively. It might be possible to apply IL-10 to induce the proliferation of IL-10-producing Tregs as therapy for RA.

As the internet of things (IoT) gains popularity, many sensors and devices for a variety of applications need to be powered. Energy harvesting produces electric power from surrounding energy and is the key to powering many IoT devices. A triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a newly-introduced device that harvests electric energy from vibrational energy using the principle of electrostatic energy. Here, the characteristics of the TENG are determined to model and simulate under realistic operation using derating factors. Simulations using the ideal TENG’s circuit model diverge significantly from the actual experimental results. Thus, derating factors are introduced to minimize error between simulation and experimental results. Derating factors of the internal voltage source and the capacitor of the TENG are defined and swept over a range of values to find the values that best fit to the experimental results. For the contact-mode TENG, a voltage derating of 0.0054 and capacitor derating value of 1 resulted in the lowest error in terms of power output. The comparison of the simulation and experiment shows that the they are matched with an error of 1.14×10-13 A for current, 0.157 V for voltage, and 3.81×10-13 W for power.

Background: Regulatory T cells (Tregs) have been investigated intensively for some decades. These cells regulate the immune system, prevent overactivated immune responses and can be used therapeutically. For rheumatoid arthritis (RA), understanding the functions and status of Tregs is an important step for understanding immune regulation in this autoimmune disease. Methods: We investigated the percentages, phenotypes and suppressive functions of $CD4^+CD25^+$ Tregs in peripheral blood (PB) of patients with RA. Results: The percentages were higher in the patients (n=12) than in healthy controls (n=10), and the cells expressed the $CD45RB^{low}$, CTLA-4 and CCR7 phenotypes. We also investigated the expression of Foxp3 and secretion of interleukin (IL)-10 induced $CD4^+CD25^+$ Tcells by anti-CD3 antibody treatment. A suppressive function of the patients' cells was shown through coculture with $CD4^+CD25^-$ T cells in vitro. Conclusion: We suggest that, despite their increased numbers and suppressive function, they manage the ongoing inflammation ineffectively. It might be possible to apply IL-10 to induce the proliferation of IL-10-producing Tregs as therapy for RA.
