Development of a pavement block piezoelectric energy harvester for self-powered walkway applications

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We propose a pavement block piezoelectric energy harvester (PBPEH) that can be installed in an actual walkway. We developed an Internet of Things (IoT) system that can power the walkway signal indicator (delineator) and also collect environmental data (such as humidity and temperature) near the walkway utilizing the PBPEH, without a battery. A highly integrated module with 24 piezoelectric devices were fixed inside the PBPEH. Under maximum weight condition, that is, in case of a person weighing 100 kg passing over the module, an output voltage of 38.52 V<SUB>max</SUB>, current of 3.85 mA<SUB>max</SUB>, and power of 148.3 mW<SUB>max</SUB> (3.7 W/m<SUP>2</SUP>) were generated at a load resistance of 10 kΩ. Energy storage test as applied to realistic conditions, that is, when a 60 kg person (average weight condition) passes over the module 10 times it charged a capacitor (1000 μF) to 55.6 mJ. As a result, it successfully turned on a delineator installed on an actual walkway after 4.8 s and powered the IoT sensor system without an external energy source.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The harvester was installed in common pavement block on an actual walkway. </LI> <LI> The harvesting module produces 148.3 mW<SUB>max</SUB> and 3.7 W/m<SUP>2</SUP>. </LI> <LI> The harvester successfully powered a wireless sensor network and a walkway indicator. </LI> <LI> This technology can improve an Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure on actual walkway. </LI> </UL> </P>

Purpose: The incidence of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) has been increasing; however, few algorithms are available to identify DILI in electronic health records (EHRs). We aimed to identify and evaluate DILI with an appropriate screening algorithm. Methods: We collected data from 3 university hospitals between June 2015 and May 2016 using our newly developed algorithm for identifying DILI. Among patients with alanine transferase (ALT) ≤ 120 IU/L and total bilirubin (TB) ≤ 2.4 mg/dL in blood test results within 48 hours of admission, those who either had 1) ALT > 120 IU/L and TB > 2.4 mg/dL or 2) ALT > 200 IU/L at least once during hospitalization were identified. After excluding patients with liver disease-related diagnosis at discharge, medical records were retrospectively reviewed to evaluate epidemiological characteristics of DILI. Results: The total number of inpatients was 256,598, of whom 1,100 (0.43%) were selected by the algorithm as suspected DILI. Subsequently, 365 cases (0.14% of total inpatients, 95% confidence interval, 0.13–0.16) were identified as DILI, yielding a positive predictive value of 33.1%. Antibiotics (n = 214, 47.2%) were the major class of causative drug followed by chemotherapeutic agents (n = 87, 19.2%). The most common causative drug was piperacillin-tazobactam (n = 38, 8.4%); the incidence of DILI by individual agent was highest for methotrexate (19.4 cases/1,000 patients administered the drug). Common reasons for excluding suspected DILI cases were ischemic hepatitis and postoperative liver dysfunction. Conclusions: Using our EHR-based algorithm, we identified that approximately 0.14% of patients developed DILI during hospitalization. Further studies are needed to modify criteria for more accurate identification of DILI.
The case report : More than 20 submucosal myomas of the uterus removed by hysteroscopic resection

Submucosal myoma arise just under the lining of the uterine cavity. The survey shows that the incidence rate of submucosal myoma of the uterus is about 20~40%, and the disease frequently occurs in women aged 30~50 years. Submucosal myoma is the most common cause of vaginal bleeding of all types of myomas. Even no more than 2-3 centimeters in diameter of submucosal myoma can produce very heavy and prolonged menses. In their submucosal localization, myomas can be treated exclusively using surgical procedures, and they may be accessible by operative hysteroscopy-the standard surgical approach. Almost patients have less than 2 myomas, but, there have not been reported many submucosal myomas as like this case. A 27 year-old woman was referred for evaluation of aggravated menorrhagia and dysmenorrhea. The length of the period was 8days and she needed more than 4 large pads from 3rd to 5th day. So, the Hb was 8.5. And the NRS (numeric rating scale) was 7 at the periods. The first time when she came to hospital, the ultrasonographic evaluation revealed 3 submucosal myomas (less than 3cm sized). The MRI(magnetic resonance imaging) confirmed the presence of multiple submucosal myomas. After injection of GnRH agonist for two times, she got myomectomy by hysteroscopic resection. From the operation, we could see over 20 myomas up to 3cm. Biopsy confirmed submucosal cellular leiomyoma. After the operation, the amount of vaginal bleeding is decreased, and menstrual pain score is also improved.

<P>We report more accurate extraction method of the defect density of states for solution-processed indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (IGZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs). Since the solution-processed IGZO TFTs have a very thin (similar to 8 nm) active semiconductor layer, their back-channel surface potential should be considered in the field-effect method. If the back-channel surface potential is ignored, deviation between theoretically derived and experimentally measured activation energy data becomes more significant as the thickness of the semiconductor layer decreases in comparison with its Debye length. Dependence of the back-channel surface potential on the applied gate voltages was verified by scanning Kelvin probe microscopy and found to be proportional to the gate voltages. The modified field-effect method provided a more accurate model of the activation energy over the subthreshold region and correspondingly more accurate defect density of states of the IGZO TFTs.</P>

Carbendazim is a fungicide of benzimidazole group which is widely used in the agriculture of pepper, ginseng and many other crops. Carbendazim has greatly increased the agricultural production in the last few decades but it cannot be degraded naturally in soil. To remove the remnant pesticide in polluted environment, many rhizobacteria are used as biodegradation agent. Few bacterial strains isolated from soil were found to be capable of degrading carbendazim. Isolates were selected from the soil dwelling rhizobacteria based on the ability of using carbendazim as carbon and nitrogen source in M9 minimal medium. The identification of the Carbendazim-degrading bacteria was analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and the strains were identified and designated as Bacillus velezensis HY-3479 and Paenibacillus polymyxa HSWM. Strain HSWM showed the best carbendazim enduring activity at in vitro pesticide agar test. Both strains had significantly higher degradation rate compared to control strain Bacillus subtilis KACC 15590 in HPLC analysis and Bacillus velezensis HY-3479 had the best degradation rate of 76.99%. In gene expression analysis, upregulation of carbendazim degrading genes (mheI, hdx) was observed for both HY-3479 and HSWM strains. Biodegrading activity of isolated strains may be developed as useful means for bioremediation and used as potential microbial agent in sustainable agriculture.

An innovative small-scale piezoelectric energy harvester has been proposed to gather wind energy. A conventional horizontal-axis wind power generation has a low generating eciency at low wind speed. To overcome this weakness, we designed a piezoelectric windmill optimized at low-speed wind. A piezoelectric device having high energy conversion eciency is used in a small windmill. The maximum output power of the windmill was about 3.14 mW when wind speed was 1.94 m/s. Finally, the output power and the eciency of the system were compared with a conventional wind power system. This work will be beneficial for the piezoelectric energy harvesting technology to be applied to the real world such as wireless sensor networks (WSN).

In this study, we compared a cantilever piezoelectric energy harvester with a fixed-fixed piezoelectric energy harvester and analyzed the output powers of two harvesters. In two harvesting systems, the same piezoelectric material was used for giving identical condition. In order to exert input energy, we fell steel balls on the piezoelectric harvester. The weights of steel balls were 2g and 4g. The cantilever piezoelectric energy harvester generated the maximum power of 6.494 mW with a 4g steel ball and the fixed-fixed piezoelectric energy harvester produced the maximum power of 8.934 mW. The fixed-fixed piezoelectric energy harvester produced higher maximum power than the cantilever one in all cases. The results shows that 33-mode is more dominant than 31-mode.
