This contribution deals with the development of emulsions formulated using thyme essential oil and a new biomass-derived surfactant. In addition, this work extends our knowledge concerning the factors that can influence stability and droplet size distributions of microfluidized emulsions, such as the geometry of the rotor–stator used and the homogenization rate in the primary homogenization. Stable thyme oil-in-water emulsions (30 wt%) containing submicron droplets were formed. Interestingly, laser diffraction results reveal that mean droplet sizes are mainly controlled by homogenization rates and polydispersity by the rotor–stator geometry used in the first step of homogenization. In addition, higher droplet sizes for pre-emulsions seem to be a key factor in order to reduce both the degree of recoalescence and the size of the droplets in the second homogenization step. Furthermore, higher droplet sizes in the pre-emulsion favour higher physical stability of the final emulsions. Finally, this research highlights the importance of controlling primary homogenization conditions for the physical stability of microfluidized emulsions that contain natural ingredients.
Evaluation of promising oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus spp.) for production in tropical regions

The biological efficiencies of promising Pleurotus spp. were evaluated. Pleurotus ostreatus, Pleurotus tuberregium,and Pleurotus sajor-cajuwere investigated at temperatures of 22oC, 20oC, and 18oC to determine their ability to adapt to temperatures that are likely to be found in subtropical regions. The experiment was conducted using a substrate comprising Popular sawdust 60% + cotton seed 20% + beet pulp 20% under a relative humidity of 65%. The results indicated that there were significant differences in terms of biological efficiency between the species: P. tuber regium 128.84% at 22oC, P. ostreatus 108.41% at 22oC, and P. sajor-caju is 80% at 20oC. The common temperatures at which all species showed the highest biological efficiencies were 22oC and 20oC. Therefore, the production of the evaluated species was equal to or surpassed biological efficiencies reported in tropical environments, thereby demonstrating a potential opportunity to adapt to tropical environments without compromising quality standards.
Opportunities for Joint Cooperation in R&D for FEALAC Countries

The general purpose of this paper is to identify opportunities for and to measure existing collaboration on research and development between institutions from the countries of Asia and Latin America in FEALAC’s framework, in the fields of biotechnology and nanotechnology and their convergence. The methodological approach includes scientific and technological surveillance and research seeking to identify both the R&D and innovation capacities of the countries as well as the degree of international cooperation between countries of the two regions; case studies and a study of the governance framework of international collaboration in R&D about issues considered global challenges. The study has three main findings. First, nanotechnology, biotechnology and their convergence contribute to solving the problem of contamination by heavy metals affecting most of the countries that are part of FEALAC and to address problems arising from the accelerated rate of energy consumption, which also contributes to environmental damage. In this scenario, important business opportunities arise from the adaptation and development of bio-refinery technologies. Second, the scientific relationship between FEALAC countries, mainly between Asian and Latin American countries, is weak as can be seen in research for articles and patents. But there is plenty of room and potential for improvement. Third, current and upcoming joint R&D programs and projects should be linked both to existing governance structures and to new ones that serve as experiments of STI public policy regarding innovative management of intellectual property and capacity building. Practical implications are included in lessons learned and a set of recommendations involving a couple of proposals. One proposal calls for research and innovation in promising fields for international cooperation. Another proposal creates mechanisms in the governance framework for sharing knowledge, capacity building, and funding.

The target of this work was to compare the yield of three homogenization processes (two different rotor–stator devices and a high-pressure valve homogenizer) for the development of O(green solvent)/Wemulsions containing an eco-friendly emulsifier. Rheology, laser diffraction, optical microscopy andmultiple light scattering were the main techniques used to assess the efficiency of homogenizationmethods. First the best values of the processing variables were obtained for each homogenizer andsecondly a comparison of properties of emulsions prepared with these optimum processing conditionswas carried out. The results obtained revealed that the more stable emulsions were prepared with anUltraturrax T25.

Objectives: This study aims to investigate the effects of a combination of soy isoflavones, 8-prenylnaringenin (8-PN), and melatonin in postmenopausal women suffering from moderate-to-severe hot flashes (HFs).Methods: A multicenter, prospective, open-label study enrolled 44 postmenopausal women suffering from moderate-to-severe HFs (≥ 5 daily or ≥ 35 weekly) to receive 54.4 mg standardized soy isoflavones (including 24.5 mg genistein and 16.3 mg daidzein), 100 µg 8-PN, and 1 mg melatonin once daily for 12 weeks. The primary clinical outcomes included changes in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scores (Menopause-Specific QoL questionnaire [MENQoL] and Cervantes Scale) and HFs following 4 and 12 weeks of treatment. Other analyses included treatment adherence, acceptability, tolerability, and safety.Results: All of the four domains of MENQoL questionnaire significantly improved at 4 weeks (P < 0.05) and 12 weeks (P < 0.001), affecting significantly the vasomotor, psychosocial, and physical spheres (41.2%, 26.3%, and 25.0%; 12 weeks improvements, respectively). Similarly, in the menopause (39.3%) and psychic (51.7%) domains (both P < 0.05 at 12 weeks), the global score of the Cervantes Scale significantly increased at 4 weeks (18.6%) and 12 weeks (35.4%). Accordingly, moderate-to-severe HFs significantly decreased at 4 weeks compared to baseline (41.7% reduction) and further reduced at 12 weeks (76.5%), including the total number of episodes.Conclusions: Food supplements containing soy isoflavones, 8-PN, and melatonin showed an early and progressive benefit for reducing clinically significant HFs and for improving HRQoL across all domains, favorably affecting postmenopausal women’s overall well-being.
CASE REPORT : Congenital Tuberculosis as a Result of Disseminated Maternal Disease: Case Report

Although tuberculosis is highly prevalent worldwide, congenital tuberculosis is one of the least common manifestations of the disease. The diagnosis is usually difficult because of the non-specific clinical presentation and the lack of awareness of maternal disease prior to pregnancy and delivery. We present the case of a preterm neonate with congenital tuberculosis, born to a previously healthy mother who had developed severe disseminated tuberculosis during her pregnancy. Once the diagnosis was confirmed in the mother, the congenital infection was confirmed by isolation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in gastric aspirates, and positive polymerase chain reaction in a cerebrospinal fluid examination. Treatment for tuberculosis with a four-drug regimen resulted in an adequate clinical response in both the mother and infant.

In this paper, we study boundary value problems for fractional integrodifferential equations involving Caputo derivative in Banach spaces. A generalized singular type Gronwall inequality is given to obtain an important priori bounds. Some sufficient conditions for the existence solutions are established by virtue of fractional calculus and fixed point method under some mild conditions.
