Torque Display Method for Free-Form Deformation with Haptic Device

Haptic devices provide a powerful interface that allows users to use their sense of touch to interact with 3D shapes. Even though much research has been done on haptics-based design and sculpting, less effort has been spent on applications related to torque computing and to rque-based modeling. We have constructed a 3D shape modeling and modification system based on a haptic device, with acceptable interactivity to improve intuition. Bending and twisting formulations are widely used in physical modeling and sculpting. The use of to rque-based haptic interaction for deforming and editing 3D shapes has the potential to magnify artistic intuition and creativity of designers. In this paper, we propose a torque display method for free-form deformation(FFD) with haptic device. The combination of bending and twisting extends the editing capabilities of constructed shape deformation system by means of screw-motions.

This presentation aims to discuss girls’education in rural areas in Japan during the 1930s. Previous studies on rural education during the modern period in Japan mostly discussed the cases of schools for boys; there are hardly any discussions on girls’ education in previous studies. This presentation discusses the case of “Kasei-Jogakko” (home economics girls’school) established by Chiba Prefecture Agricultural Association. The purpose of establishing this school was to educate girls in ways different ways from those employed in conventional education for girls, such as in girls’ high schools, and to train them to become capable wives who could cooperate with their husbands for the improvement of rural life. Such education made them criticize their longing for city life and the students of other schools, and they wrote about their determination to continue living in a rural society. Rural education for girls was started as the antithesis to rapid urbanization and the expansion of secondary education, which was unsuitable for rural people. During this period in Japan, girls who lived in rural society were expected to work towards rural development and to restrain their passion and desire for city life, and admiration for people with a higher educational background.

The fermentation process for a poly (L-lactide) (PLA)-degrading enzyme production by a newly isolate of thermophilic PLAdegrading Actinomadura sp. T16-1 was investigated. The strain produced 33.9 U/mL of enzyme activity after cultivation at 50°C under shaking of 150 rpm for 96 h in a medium consisting of (w/v) 0.05% PLA film, 0.2% gelatin, 0.4% (NH4)2SO4, 0.4% K2HPO4, 0.2 % KH2PO4, and 0.02% MgSO4 ⋅ 7H2O. The optimal concentration of PLA film and gelatin obtained by response surface methodology (RSM) for the highest production of PLA-degrading enzyme was 0.035% (w/v) and 0.238% (w/v), respectively. Under these conditions, the model predicted 40.4 U/mL of PLA-degrading activity and the verification of the optimization showed 44.6 U/mL of PLA-degrading enzymatic activity in the flasks experiment. The optimal physical factors affecting enzyme production in an airlift fermenter have not been studied so far. Therefore, the physical parameters such as aeration rate, pH, and temperature affecting PLA-degrading enzyme production by Actinomadura keratinilytica strain T16-1 in a 3 l airlift fermenter were investigated. The response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize PLAdegrading enzyme production by implementing the central composite design. The optimal conditions for higher production of PLA-degrading enzyme were aeration rate of 0.43 vvm, pH of 6.85, and temperature at 46oC. Under these conditions, the model predicted a PLA-degrading activity of 254 U/ml. Verification of the optimization showed that PLA-degrading enzyme production of 257 U/ml was observed after 3 days cultivation under the optimal conditions in a 3 l airlift fermenter. The production under the optimized condition in the airlift fermenter was higher than un-optimized condition by 1.7 folds and 12 folds with un-optimized medium or condition in shake flasks. This is the first report on the optimization of environmental conditions for improvement of PLA-degrading enzyme production in a 3 l airlift fermenter by using a statistical analysis method. Moreover, the crude PLA-degrading enzyme could be adsorbed to the substrate and degraded PLA powder to produce lactic acid as degradation products. Therefore, this incident indicates that PLAdegrading enzyme produced by Actinomadura keratinilytica NBRC 104111 strain T16-1 has a potential to degrade PLA to lactic acid as a monomer and can be used for the recycle of PLA polymer.

This paper presents the concept design, material reliability, and thermal management of the direct oil-cooling automotive power module we developed. This type of module faces several significant challenges compared to the conventional water-cooling power module, such as copper lead corrosion, rubber swelling, and high thermal resistance. We therefore prototyped a double-side direct oil-cooling power module to investigate the reliability and thermal resistance performance. Our findings showed that mineral oil-based coolant and insulating ester oil have outstanding reliability and compatibility to power module materials. A 31% reduction of thermal resistance at 10L/min 25℃ was obtained, which is much lower than even referenced double-side water-cooling power modules, thus demonstrating the feasibility of direct oil-cooling automotive power electronics.
