ABSTRACT This study was conducted to determine influence of planting date, seeding rate and phosphate rate on main growth, characters, yield and chemical composition of senna from March 11, 1998 to December in Cheju Province. Days to flowering was lessened as planting date was delayed. The plant height of senna was the longest at 31 March planting (99cm) than at the other planting date. Stem diameter, number of leaves were increased at 31 March but number of branches was not affected by planting date. And number of withering leaves were increased as planting date was earlier. Fresh forage yield per lOa, for senna was the greatest (4,660kg) at 31 March planting, the second was 4,397kg at 1 April planting and the reduced the 3,473kg at 11 March planting. Also dry matter yield per lOa, crude protein yield and total digestable nutrient (TDN) yield was nearly the same tendency. Crude protein, crude fat percent was the greastest at 11 March planting and than decreased with further increased at planting date. Crude ash and crude fiber percent was decreased tendency as planting date was delayed. Nitrogen free extract (NFE), TDN percent was increased tendency as planting date was delayed. SPAD reading value of leaves had an efficiency increased as planting date was delayed.

진도개와 삽사리 혈청 lactate dehydrogenase와 혈청 alkaline phosphatase의 동위효소 및 효소활성도를 분석하였다. 전기영동결과 진도개와 삽사리의 혈청에서는 5가지 종류의 LDH의 동위효소가 모두 확인되었다. LDH의 활성도는 진돗개의 경우 522.53 ± 279.96(U/L)이었고 삽사리는 534.10 ± 280.35(U/L)이었다. 진도개와 삽사리의 혈청 alkaline phosphatase전기영동상에서는 한 종류의 동위효소만 관찰되었고 활성도는 진도개의 경우 7.61 ± 4.52(K-A unit)였고 삽사리는 10.46 ± 7.10(K-A unit)였다. 삽사리의 ALP 활성도는 연령에 따라 커다란 차이를 나타내었다. Isozymes and activities of serum lactate dehydrogenase and serum alkaline phosphatase were examined in Korean Jindo dog and Sapsaree. The electrophoretic pattern of serum lactate dehydrogenase showed five isozymes. The activities of serum lactate dehydrogenase were 522.53 ± 279.96 and 534.10 ± 280.35(U/L) in Jindo dog and Sapsaree. One kind of isozymes was observed in electrophoretic phenotypes of serum alkaline phosphatase. The activities of serum alkaline phosphatase were 7.61 ± 4.52 and 10.46 ± 7.10 (K-A unit) in Jindo dog and Sapsaree. A significant difference of alkaline phosphatase was observed according to the age in Sapsaree.

Background: Although appropriate dietary adjustments in hemodialysis (HD) patients are important, most HD patients have difficulty adhering to dietary therapy due to the stress of a restricted-food diet or loss of appetite, which eventually leads to malnutrition and other complications. The dietary intake of HD patients stratified by nutritional status has not yet been studied. Methods: In total, 111 HD patients from five dialysis centers were stratified into 2 groups based on the Subjective Global Assessment: the well-nourished group and the poorly nourished group. The 7-day dietary intake and food behaviors of the two groups were compared. Logistic regression analysis was performed to reveal the factors associated with poorly nourished status. Results: The 7-day dietary survey showed a lower intake of total calories and protein and a higher intake of sodium and potassium than in the standard recommendations, but there were no differences between groups. The poorly nourished group ate fried food significantly more frequently than the well-nourished group. Moreover, higher hip and waist circumferences were significantly associated with poorly nourished status. Conclusion: We found differences in the dietary intake patterns and food behaviors between well- and poorly nourished HD patients. Further research is needed to design customized nutritional education, consultations, and dietary management for HD patients.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a very common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. Nerve growth factor (NGF) may be involved in the pathogenesis of PCOS. In this study, we investigated the effect of Korean red ginseng extract (KRGE) on the ovarian morphology and NGF expression in an estradiol valerate (EV)-induced rat model. Polycystic ovaries were induced by a single intramuscular injection of estadiol valerate (4 mg, dissolved in sesame oil) in adult cycling rats. KRGE was administered orally (200 ㎎/㎏ body weight/day) for 60 consecutive days, beginning 60 days after the induction. Ovarian morphology was almost normalized and NGF was normalized in the EV+KRGE group. KRGE lowered the high numbers of antral follicles and increased the number of corpora lutea in the polycystic ovaries. The results are consistent with a beneficial effect of KRGE in the treatment of PCOS.

Distribution of Rare Plants and Endemic Plants in Jirisan National Park

The results of the study of the rare and regional species of the Jirisan (Mt.) Korea National Park has reported 3 CR species, including the Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum, 4 EN species, including Rhododendron tschonoskii, 7 VU species, including Cacalia pseudo-taimingasa, 11 LC species, including Lilium distichum, and 3 DD species, including Aconitum chiisanense, which makes a total of 28 species. In terms of species exclusive to the region, a total of 7 species, including Fraxinus chiisanensis, Pseudostellaria heterophylla, Filipendula formosa and Cirsium chanroenicum, were confirmed, and since they were distributed widely in the Jeonji region of Jirisan (Mt.), there was minimal damage. Since rare species are localized in the region of Agosan (Mt.), there has been continuous damage due to visitors and hikers to the area, and there seems to be the need to handle the decreasing habitat for Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum, Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii and Trientalis europaea.

<P>Finding alternatives for Bi<SUB>2</SUB>Te<SUB>3</SUB>, the only thermoelectric material for near-room-temperature (RT) applications, is of great importance in thermoelectrics. Here, we report a very promising near-RT thermoelectric figure of merit (<I>ZT</I><SUB>max</SUB> = 0.9 at 390 K, <I>ZT</I><SUB>ave</SUB> = 0.68 between RT and 390 K) for Cu-excess α-Cu<SUB>2+<I>x</I></SUB>Se, comprising low-cost, abundant, and nontoxic elements. Although α-Cu<SUB>2+<I>x</I></SUB>Se has a propensity to form a large number of Cu vacancies to stabilize its structure by diminishing Cu-Cu interactions, excess Cu leads to a decrease in hole concentration by suppressing the formation of Cu vacancies, resulting in a power factor optimization in Cu-excess compounds. These effects of Cu addition were also elucidated by density functional theory calculations and the Boltzmann transport equation. Furthermore, we directly measured the Lorentz number (2.12 × 10<SUP>-8</SUP> V<SUP>2</SUP> K<SUP>-2</SUP> at RT) of α-Cu<SUB>2</SUB>Se for the first time and determined the origin of its very low lattice thermal conductivity (0.27 W m<SUP>-1</SUP> K<SUP>-1</SUP> at RT). On the basis of phonon calculations, it is suggested that this ultralow lattice thermal conductivity is associated with the structural instability of α-Cu<SUB>2</SUB>Se, as evidenced by the existence of negative phonon frequency in its phonon dispersion. On the basis of our findings, we propose a new way to control the thermoelectric transport properties of α-Cu<SUB>2+<I>x</I></SUB>Se through overstoichiometric Cu addition, and we also suggest that Cu-excess α-Cu<SUB>2</SUB>Se is a very promising thermoelectric material to replace Bi<SUB>2</SUB>Te<SUB>3</SUB> for near-RT applications.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
