N/A Objectives: Cardiogenic shock resulting from acute myocardial infarction is a serious complication with high mortality. The early identification of patients at high risk of developing post-infarction cardiogenic shock might allow early intervention in an attempt to prevent cardiogenic shock and to reduce the mortality due to cardiogenic shock. The aim of the present study was to examine the risk factors of inhospital development of cardiogenic shock among patients with acute myocardial infarction. Methods: We studied 152patients with acute myocardial infarction who were admitted to Kang-Nam St. Mary's hospital within 24hours after the onset of chest pain and did not have cardiogenic shack on admission between March 1991 and May 1994. Clinical data of these patients were analyzed. Results: Of 152patients, 17(11.1%) developed cardiogenic shock during their hospital stay. Cardiogenic shock developed in 53% of cases more than 24hours after admission. 82.4% of patients with cardiogenic shock died whereas a 6.7% in-hospital mortality was found among patients without cardiogenic shock. Multivariate regression analysis that controlled for variables affecting incidence of postinfarction cardiogenic shock showed that independent risk factors for in-hospital cardiogenic shock were history of myocardial infarction (adjusted relative odds[RO]=5.294, 95% confidence interval[CI]=2.149 to 13.041); heart failure on admission (RO=3.344, 95% CI=1.738 to 6.432); hyperglycemia (>180mg/dl) in non-diabetic patients (RO=3.270, 95% CI=1,590 to 6.727); age over 70 year old (RO=2.912, 95% CI= 1.816 to 4.668); ST deviation over 4mm (RO=2.417, 95% CI=1.225 to 4.767); peak LDH level greater than 1600U/ml (RO=1.154, 95% CI=1.080 to 1.233). Patients with one independent risk factor had an estimated probability of 10.5% for developing inhospital cardiogenic shock; patients with two independent risk factors, 48.5%, patients with three risk factors, 65.0% patients with four risk factors, 65.7% patients with five risk factors, 67.2%. Conclusion: Of post-infarction cardiogenic shock during admission, 53% developed more than 24hours after admission. The more independent risk factors on admission for inhospital cardiogenic shock patients with acute myocardial infarction had, the more likely in-hospital cardiogenic shock developed.

<P>This work shows that the surface properties of polyurethane acrylate (PUA) films can be controlled by the coating of nanoporous organic networks (NONs). By the NON coating, the hydrophilic nature of nanostructured PUA (N-PUA) film was converted to superhydrophobic surface. The NON-coated N-PUA films (N-PUA-NONs) were applied as stationary adsorbents for the capture of particulate matter (PM) in air. Compared with the original PUA films, the N-PUA-NON films showed much enhanced capture performance toward PM and recyclability through water washing, indicating the potential of outdoor application as stationary self-cleaning adsorbents under natural surroundings.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Colloidal coating solution was prepared to enhance the hydrophilic property of the film surface. Water and ethanol were used as the dispersion media and (glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GPS) as a binder in the colloidal silica coatings. Ethylene diamine was added to the colloidal silica solution as the curing agent. The colloidal silica solution was regarded as a hard-sphere suspension model with low volume fraction of the silica particles. Rheological properties of the silica suspensions modified with GPS have been investigated as a function of pH and concentration. The acidic solution showed high viscosity change by fast hydrolysis reaction and adsorption of the organic binders on the surface of silica particles. However, the hydrolysis was slow at the basic condition and the binders combined with themselves by condensation. The viscosity change was smallest at pH 7. The viscosity increased with the curing time after adding ethylenediamine, and the increase of viscosity at low pH was higher than that at high pH. The hydrophilic properties of the coating film were investigated by the contact angle of water and film surface. The smallest contact angle was shown under the strong acidic condition of pH 2.

We recently reported that the ginseng saponin metabolite, compound K (20-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyra-nosyl-20(S)-protopanaxadiol, IH901), inhibits the growth of U937 cells through caspase-dependent apoptosis pathway. In this study, we further characterized the effects of compound K on U937 cells and found that, in addition to apoptosis, compound K induced the arrest of the G1 phase. The compound K treated U937 cells showed increased p21 expression; an inhibitory protein of cyclincdk complex. The up-regulation of p21 was followed by the inactivation of cyclin D and the cdk4 protein, which act at the early $G_1$ phase, and cyclin E, which acts at the late $G_1$ phase. Furthermore, compound K induced the activation of JNK and the transcription factor AP-1, which is a downstream target of JNK. These findings suggest that the up-regulation of p21 and activation of JNK in the compound K treated cells contribute to the arrest of the $G_1$ phase.

A new silkworm variety, Chunsujam, for spring rearing season is F$_1$ hybrid between Japanese race Jam145 bred by 8459/8711 and Chinese race Jam146 by 8544/M8626. Jam145, Japanese parent of the Chunsujam, showed high GCA in pupation rate and Jam146, Chinese parent, showed high GCA in pupation rate and single cocoon weight. In the local adaptability test performed at 8 local areas in spring of 1999, Chunsujam was 5% higher in larval weight, 3% in single cocoon weight, and 4% in cocoon yield from 10,000 of the 3rd molted larvae, respectively, than the check variety Baegokjam.

lridology, a form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), is the diagnosis of medical conditions through noting irregularities of the pigmentation in the iris. lridological constitution has a strong familial aggregation and is implicated in heredity. Apolipoprotein E (apoE) gene polymorphism is one of the most well studied genetic markers of vascular disease. I investigated the relationship between iridological constitution and apoE polymorphism. I classified 87 hypertensive patients with family history of cerebral infarction and 79 controls according to iris constitution, and determined apoE genotype. Neurogenic type in hypertensives was 32.2% compared with 16.5% in controls (P<0.001). No differences in the apoE genotypes frequencies were observed in patients compared with those in controls ($x^2=0.726$, df-=2, P=0.696). However, in a population with ${\varepsilon}3/{\varepsilon}4$ genotype, the frequency of neurogenic constitution was significantly higher in hypertensives than in controls (60% vs. 0%) ($x^2=5.265$, df=l, P=0.022). These results could imply that apoE ${\varepsilon}3/{\varepsilon}4$ genotype and neurogenic iris constitution are risk factors for hypertension.
Breeding of a New Non-Cocooning Silkworm Variety, Hachojam, Suitable for Autumn Rearing Season

A new non-cocooning silkworm variety, Hachojam, suitable for autumn rearing season is single cross Fl hybrid between Japanese race Jam 307 and Chinese race Jam 126. Jam 307, Japanese parent of the Hachojam, which is a source for non-cocooning process showed a high GCA (generation combining ability) in naked pupation rate and Jam 126, Chinese parent, showed a high GCA in pupation rate and single pupal weight. In the local adaptability test performed at 8 local areas in autumn of 1999 to 2000, the naked pupation rate and thin cocoon rate of Hachojam were 64.7% and 35.3% , respectively. The pupal weight calculated from 10,000 of the 3rd molted larvae was 24% heavier in Hachcjam than the cocoon-producing, check variety Daesungjam.
