        Floristic characteristics of vascular plants and first distributional report of Pseudostellaria baekdusanensis M. Kim in Yongneup wetland protected area

        Yongneup wetland protected area, the only high moor in Korea, is a core area to conserve biodiversity. Even though the Yongneup wetland protected area is relatively small, various plant species are distributed in the Yongneup wetland protected area because it includes various habitats showing different environmental gradients. Vascular plants distributed in the Yongneup wetland protected area were identified as a total of 376 taxa that is composed of 73 families, 217 genera, 322 species, 3 subspecies, 44 varieties and 7 forms. For endangered plants designated by the Ministry of Environment, 5 species including Trientalis europaea var. arctica, Lilium dauricum, Halenia corniculata, Lychnis wilfordii and Menyanthes trifoliata were found and 34 taxa were confirmed to be distributed only in the mountainous wetland habitats. Regarding naturalized plants, a total of 11 taxa were distributed, but most of them were distributed in the areas where artificial interference has occurred. And in areas inside the wetlands that are relatively well preserved, 2 species of Bidens frondosa and Erigeron annuus were observed. In this study, the occurrence and distribution of Pseudostellaria baekdusanensis M. Kim, which was recently found in Mt. Baekdu and reported as a new species, were identified in the Yongneup wetland protected area. A wetland is a very vulnerable area to drastic environmental changes and damages to its ecosystem could cause the extinction of rare plant species which are distributed only in the wetlands. Therefore, it is mandatory that current status of the Yongneup wetland protected area is evaluated and actions to prevent rapid environmental changes are taken. Fourteen separate investigations were conducted in 2013 and another four in 2014, to evaluate current status of the Yongneup wetland protected area. These investigations have provided us the basic information for future actions of conservation and restoration.

        실용음악 전공 학생들의 발성치료 전후 성대 및 음성 특성 비교

        Background and Objectives : Many students major in applied music singing have various difficulties in phonation when they sing or perform. But the studies about this cause are lack. The purpose of this study is whether singing voice therapy based on vocal music is effective or not to applied music singing students that have difficulties in phonation. Materials and Methods : Singing voice therapy program had been done to 8 students major in applied music singing during 7 weeks. We did laryngeal stroboscope, perceptual, acoustic and aerodynamic examination before and after singing voice therapy to this students. And we studied post examination results have differences or improvements compared to pre examination results. Results : Four male students don't have effective improvement after singing voice therapy but they shows slight improvement in aerodynamic examination values compared to pre examination values. Four female students shows improvement in aerodynamic examination values and pitch range increasing. Above all, one student's vocal nodules disappeared after singing voice therapy. Conclusion : Singing voice therapy based on music singing is very effective to the students major in applied music singing. Above all, their curriculum in applied music singing should include phonation training based on music singing before training perform and technic practices.

        <SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG PET-CT에서 진단된 갑상선 우연종의 악성종양 발견율 및 특징

        <B>Purpose: </B>PET-CT is often used to differentiate benign or malignant thyroid incidentalomas. In this retrospective study, we evaluated whether the <SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG uptake pattern and PET-CT findings improved accuracy over the standardized uptake value (SUV). <B>Methods:</B> <SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG PET-CT was performed on 2,178 subjects from August, 2004, to October, 2007, in Sung-ae Hospital. PET-CT was performed on 806 patients (37%) with suspected or known nonthyroidal cancer and 1,372 healthy subjects (63%) without a previous history of cancer. We investigated the clinical characteristics of patients, history, standardized uptake value (SUV), ultrasonography, and hormone levels in blood. Thyroidal cancer was confirmed by ultrasonography-guided fine needle aspiration and pathology after thyroid operation. <B>Results:</B> The prevalence of focal thyroid lesions on PET-CT was 8.8% (191/2178). Thyroid cancer confirmation was 7.9% (15/191). The maximum SUV of malignant thyroid lesions were significantly higher than that of benign lesions (7.00±3.08 vs. 4.49±1.84, P<0.001). <B>Conclusion:</B> PET-CT image interpretation that includes 18F-FDG uptake and SUV is better than PET-CT alone for differentiating benign and malignant lesions.         Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) is one of important forage crop grass widely cultivated in Korea. The genetic manipulation of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) necessitates a reliable and efficient, genotype-independent method of transformation. We are interested in developing molecular breeding methods to improve its nutritional quality and abiotic stress resistance. Development of a rapid and efficient transformation system is the basis for genetic manipulation of Italian ryegrass. In order to establish an efficient Agrobacterium-mediated transformation system was applied to transfer genes into seven genotypes of Italian ryegress, namely cv. 'Kogreen', 'Kopeed', 'Kowinearly', 'Kowinmaster', 'Hwasan 101', 'Hwasan104' and 'Kowinner.' The transformation system developed in this study would be useful for Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation of Italian ryegrass plants with genes of agronomic importance.

      • Classification of maturity group in 100 Korea soybean varieties

        This study was carried out to classify Korean soybean varieties based maturity group. One hundred (100) domestic soybean varieties ( 56 for fermentation, 26 for sprouting, 17 for mixed with rice) were used and seeding date was scheduled at April 30. This experiment carried out at Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute, NICE situated at Miryang from 2005 to 2006. Classification of maturity group in 100 soybeans was followed by Kweon et al's method (1974) The main difference between this experiment and that of Kweon et al's method (1974) were the planting region and planting date. This experiment was conducted on April 30 at Miryang while Kweon et al. was conducted on May 23 in Seoul. Results of maturity grouping of Korean soybean varieties showed that Keunol, which was represented among 3 varieties, belonged to Group 0, Seonnok and Danmi in GroupⅡ, Shinrok in GroupⅢ, Seonyu, represented by 17 cultivars, in GroupⅣ, Taekwang, having 44 cultivars in GroupⅤ, Daewon, represented by 25 cultivars in GroupⅥ, and Kwangdu and Keumdu in GroupⅦ.

      • Relationships comparision of major agronomic characteristics for high quality soybean seed production

        This study was carried out to obtain general agronomic characteristics and identify its relationship with seeding date for high quality soybean seed production. One hundred(100) domestic soybean varieties were used and seeding date were scheduled at April 30 and May 30. This experiment was carried out at YARI, NICE situated at Miryang from 2005 to 2006. Maturity Group(MG) was classified by Kweon et al's method (1974). Correlation analysis of major agronomic characters showed positive relationship between days to flowering and growth days, seed weight and lodging in MG ,seed crack and growth days in Ⅳ~Ⅴ MG0~Ⅲ,seed crack and days to flowering in MGⅣ~Ⅴ and MGⅥ~Ⅶ, seed crack and lodging in MGⅣ~Ⅴ and MGⅥ~Ⅶ, seed crack and seed weight in MGⅣ~Ⅴ and MGⅥ~Ⅶ, purple seed and growth days in MGⅣ~Ⅴ , purple seed and seed weight in MGⅥ~Ⅶ, phomopsis and growth days in MGⅣ~Ⅴ and MGⅥ~Ⅶ, and phomopsis and purple seed in MGⅣ~Ⅴ and MGⅥ~Ⅶ. In contrast, a negative relationship was observed between seed weight and lodging in MG0~Ⅲ. Correlating yield and major characters revealed negative relationship between days to flowering and growth days in MG0~Ⅲ and MGⅣ~Ⅴ, whereas positive relationships were obtained on MGⅥ~Ⅶ seeded on April 30. Lodging, seed weight and seed crack were all negatively correlated with yield in MGⅣ~Ⅴ and MGⅥ~Ⅶ

      • Influence of planting times on dry matter production and yield of soybean

        This experiment was carried out to clear optimum planting time for yield enlargement by comparing yield with dry matter at Miryang from 2005 to 2006. Variety used were Daewon, Daepung, Daol and Cheongja 3. Seeding was performed on April 30 to June 30 with 20day intervals and planting density was 142,857 palnts/ha (70×20㎝, 2plants per hill) with black vinyl mulching. In R2~R4 stages, crop growth rate(CGR) was largest on June 10 seeding. Although net assimilation rate(NAR) increased as seeding date was delayed, NAR on June 10 seeding was the highest throughout the growth period. Positive relationships were observed between NAR from R2 to R4 the ratio of pod to total dry matter weight. The LAI and total dry matter weight at the R4 stage was higher at earlier seeding date. In the case when seeding date was delayed, the ratio of leaf(source) and pod(sink) increased. From the comparison of all factors such as dry weight, optimum LAI, and of source to sink, the optimum planting date for high seed production was June 10. The highest yield was recorded with on June 10 seeding. Also, this seeding date showed high ratio of seed yield to dry matter in R2 stage. Difference between surveyed pod no. and theological pod no. which was calculated by dry matter ratio compared with standard seeding date(June 10) at R2 stage was the smallest in June 10 seeding.

        Inhibitory effect of ethanol extract of <i>Ampelopsis brevipedunculata</i> rhizomes on atopic dermatitis-like skin inflammation

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Ethnopharmacological relevance</B></P> <P>Extracts from various parts of <I>Ampelopsis brevipedunculata</I> has been used as anti-inflammatory agents in Asian folk medicine.</P> <P> <I>Aim of the study</I>: To demonstrate the medicinal effect of the <I>A. brevipedunculata</I> in skin inflammation, specifically atopic dermatitis (AD).</P> <P><B>Materials and methods</B></P> <P>The effect of ethanol extract of <I>A. brevipedunculata</I> rhizomes (ABE) on AD was examined using an AD-like skin inflammation model induced by repeated exposure to house dust mite (<I>Dermatophagoides farinae</I> extract, DFE) and 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). The mechanism study was performed using tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interferon (IFN)-γ-activated human keratinocytes (HaCaT). Serum histamine and immunoglobulin levels were quantified using enzymatic kits, while the gene expression of cytokines and chemokines was analyzed using quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction. The expression of signaling molecules was detected using Western blot.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>Oral administration of ABE alleviated DFE/DNCB-induced ear thickening and clinical symptoms, as well as immune cell infiltration (mast cells and eosinophils) into the dermal layer. Serum Immunoglobulin (Ig) E, DFE-specific IgE, IgG2a, and histamine levels were decreased after the administration of ABE. ABE also inhibited CD4<SUP>+</SUP>IFN-γ<SUP>+</SUP> and CD4<SUP>+</SUP>IL-4<SUP>+</SUP> lymphocyte polarization in lymph nodes and expression of TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-13, and IL-31 in the ear tissue. In TNF-α/INF-γ-stimulated keratinocytes, ABE inhibited the gene expression of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, and CCL17. In addition, ABE decreased the nuclear localization of signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 and nuclear factor-κB, and the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase.</P> <P><B>Conclusion</B></P> <P>Collectively, our data demonstrate the pharmacological role and signaling mechanism of ABE in the regulation of skin allergic inflammation, which supports our suggestion that ABE could be developed as a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of AD.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        The Development of a Mobile Remote Monitoring System by Using Differential Absorption LIDAR Technology

        A mobile differential absorption lidar (DIAL) system has been developed for pollutant gas (SO2, NO2, and O3) measurements in the atmosphere. The system is capable of measuring SO2, NO2, and O3 concentrations in the 0.3 2 km range with a 5-m spatial and a 2-min temporal resolution. The detection limit is found to be 5 ppb for SO2, 10 ppb for NO2, and 5 ppb for O3. Comparisons between the results from the DIAL and the point measurement were performed. In this paper, the developed mobile DIAL system and the results will be discussed.
