Chronic renal failure (CRF) resulting in vascular calcification, which does damage to blood vessels and endothelium, is an independent risk factor for stroke. It has been reported that cilostazol has a protective effect on the focal cerebral ischemic infarct. However, its impact on vascular injury in CRF combined stroke and its molecular protection mechanism have not been investigated. In this study, we carried out the effect of cilostazol on CRF combined stroke rats, and the results confirmed that it improved the neurobehavior, renal function as well as pathologic changes in both the kidney and brain. In addition, the inflammation and oxidative stress factors in the kidney and brain were suppressed. Moreover, the rates of brain edema and infarction were decreased. The injured brain-blood barrier (BBB) was recovered with less Evans blue extravasation and more expressions of zonula occludens-1(ZO-1) and occludin. More cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the ipsilateral hemisphere and more expression of CD31 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in brain and kidney were found in the cilostazol group. Furthermore, cell apoptosis and cell autophagy became less, on the contrary, proteins of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) after the cilostazol treatment were increased. More importantly, this protective effect is related to the pathway of Janus Kinase (JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), and the hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α). In conclusion, our results confirmed that cilostazol exerted a protective effect on the brain and kidney function, specifically in vascular injury, oxidative stress, cell apoptosis, cell autophagy, and inflammation response in CRF combined with stroke rats which were related to the upregulation of JAK/STAT3/mTOR signal pathway.
Bandwidth Enhancement of Circularly Polarized Dielectric Resonator Antenna
Ru-Ying Sun 한국전자통신연구원 2015 ETRI Journal Vol.37 No.1
Axial-ratio (AR) bandwidth enhancement is achieved for a circularly polarized (CP) cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) using a wideband hybrid coupler (WHC) combined with dual probe feed. The presented WHC, comprised of a Wilkinson power divider and a wideband 90° shifter, delivers good characteristics in terms of 3 dB power splitting and consistent 90° (5°) phase shifting over a wide bandwidth. In turn, the proposed CP DRA, for the employment of the WHC, in place of conventional designs, provides a significant enhancement on AR bandwidth and impedance matching. The antenna prototype with the WHC exhibits a 3 dB AR bandwidth of 48.66%, an impedance bandwidth of 52.5% for voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) ≤ 2, and a bandwidth of 44.66% for a gain of no less than 3 dBi. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed WHC is suitable for broadband CP DRA design.

Skeletal muscle regeneration is a highly orchestrated process initiated by activation of adult muscle satellite cells. Upon muscle injury, the inflammatory process is always accompanied by muscle regeneration. Leukotriene B4 is one of the essential inflammatory mediators. We isolated and cultured primary satellite cells. RT-PCR showed that myoblasts expressed mRNA for LTB4 receptors BLT1 and BLT2, and LTB4 promoted myoblast proliferation and fusion. Quantitative real-time PCR and immunoblotting showed that LTB4 treatment expedited the expression process of differentiation markers MyoD and M-cadherin. U-75302, a specific BLT1 inhibitor, but not LY2552833, a specific BLT2 inhibitor, blocked proliferation and differentiation of myoblasts induced by LTB4, which implies the involvement of the BLT1 pathway. Overall, the data suggest that LTB4 contributes to muscle regeneration by accelerating proliferation and differentiation of satellite cells.

A series of the thermal conductive polyamide-6 (PA6) composites filled with boron nitride (BN) were prepared by two methods, including melting method (MM) and solution method (SM). The thermal conductivity, morphology, crystallization behavior, thermal stability, and rheological properties of PA6 composites were investigated. The results showed that the thermal conductivity of two methods increased with increase in the filler content, the thermal conductivity of PA6/BN composites containing 40 wt% BN prepared by melting method was up to 1.02W·m-1·K-1, while the thermal conductivity of PA6/BN composites prepared by solution method was up to 1.44 W·m-1·K-1 at the same filler content.

<P>Direct growth of graphene on traditional glasses is of great importance for various daily life applications. We report herein the catalyst-free atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition approach to directly synthesizing large-area, uniform graphene films on solid glasses. The optical transparency and sheet resistance of such kinds of graphene glasses can be readily adjusted together with the experimentally tunable layer thickness of graphene. More significantly, these graphene glasses find a broad range of real applications by enabling the low-cost construction of heating devices, transparent electrodes, photocatalytic plates, and smart windows. With a practical scalability, the present work will stimulate various applications of transparent, electrically and thermally conductive graphene glasses in real-life scenarios.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/nalefd/2015/nalefd.2015.15.issue-9/acs.nanolett.5b01936/production/images/medium/nl-2015-019367_0006.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nl5b01936'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
Ginsenoside Re inhibits myocardial fibrosis by regulating miR-489/myd88/NF-κB pathway
Jinghui Sun,Ru Wang,Tiantian Chao,Jun Peng,Chenglong Wang,Keji Chen The Korean Society of Ginseng 2023 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.47 No.2
Background: Myocardial fibrosis (MF) is an advanced pathological manifestation of many cardiovascular diseases, which can induce heart failure and malignant arrhythmias. However, the current treatment of MF lacks specific drugs. Ginsenoside Re has anti-MF effect in rat, but its mechanism is still not clear. Therefore, we investigated the anti-MF effect of ginsenoside Re by constructing mouse acute myocardial infarction (AMI) model and AngII induced cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) model. Methods: The anti-MF effect of miR-489 was investigated by transfection of miR-489 mimic and inhibitor in CFs. Effect of ginsenoside Re on MF and its related mechanisms were investigated by ultrasonographic, ELISA, histopathologic staining, transwell test, immunofluorescence, Western blot and qPCR in the mouse model of AMI and the AngII-induced CFs model. Results: MiR-489 decreased the expression of α-SMA, collagenI, collagen III and myd88, and inhibited the phosphorylation of NF-κB p65 in normal CFs and CFs treated with AngII. Ginsenoside Re could improve cardiac function, inhibit collagen deposition and CFs migration, promote the transcription of miR-489, and reduce the expression of myd88 and the phosphorylation of NF-κB p65. Conclusion: MiR-489 can effectively inhibit the pathological process of MF, and the mechanism is at least partly related to the regulation of myd88/NF-κB pathway. Ginsenoside Re can ameliorate AMI and AngII induced MF, and the mechanism is at least partially related to the regulation of miR-489/myd88/NF-κB signaling pathway. Therefore, miR-489 may be a potential target of anti-MF and ginsenoside Re may be an effective drug for the treatment of MF.
A Method of Superposition for Analysis of the Electrically Large Problem Including Many Vehicles
Chan-Sun Park,Yi-Ru Jeong,Kibum Jung,Jaekon Shin,Jong-Gwan Yook IEEE 2016 IEEE antennas and wireless propagation letters Vol.15 No.-
<P>Commercialization and proliferation of intelligent transport systems (ITS) are progressing worldwide, including vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. Meanwhile, analysis of the related electromagnetic environment is essential for safety-related legislation. However, the theoretical analysis for multiple vehicles poses an electrically large problem and requires enormous computational resources. In this letter, we propose a method of superposition that requires much less computational resources by subgrouping the computational domain and using an efficient post-processing method. The proposed method approximates the original problem by superpositioning the individual subdomain analysis data, including scatterers near the source and observation points. This letter also presents guidelines for applying the proposed method and examples for comparison with full analysis results.</P>
