      • Anti-inflammatory Effect of Wild Indigo (Baptisia tinctoria) roots in Raw 264.7 Cells with Stimulated Lipopolysaccharide

        In this study, Baptisia tinctoria roots (BTR) tested the properties of anti-inflammatory effects. The anti-inflammation functional material, Raw 264.7 macrophage cell toxicity level measured from 10 to 100 μg/mL concentrations effects was above 81.00%. The anti-inflammatory effect of BTR in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated Raw 264.7 cells were treated in experiments with 10, 30, and 50 μg/mL concentrations. The results showed that 80.00% of the production of nitric oxide was inhibited by 50 μg/mL. The protein expression of inducible NO synthase dramatically decreased 93.14% and 52.65% in water and ethanol extracts. Also, the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 protein was reduced by 42.85% and 69.70% in water and ethanol extracts, respectively. The mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory markers, such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and prostaglandin E synthase 2, was significantly suppressed in a concentration-dependent manner. Furthermore, BTR extracts which are containing substances showed excellent efficacy against anti-inflammatory and can be used as a functional material for biological activity to prevent.

        Biological activities of extracts from Tongue fern (Pyrrosia lingua)

        In this study, Tongue fern (Pyrrosia lingua) plants that have been used traditionally as medicines. Their traditional medicinal uses, regions where indigenous people use the plants, parts of the plants used as medicines. This study was designed to assess the antioxidant and inhibition activities of extracts from P. lingua. In the P. lingua extracts was measured ethanol activity, 80.0% ethanol was high activity. The antioxidant activity was measured in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-Azino-bis-(3- ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), assays. DPPH and ABTS radical in this experiment, solid and phenolic of extract were tested, but only an average concentration of 100 μg/mL was used. However, the phenolic extract is shown phenolic activity reached a peak. Also, phenolic extracts ware reached peak water and ethanol extracts. As a result, using the phenolic extracts did other antioxidant assays such as DPPH, ABTS, protection factor, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances at 50-200 μg/mL concentrations. The activity of elastase and collagenase, inhibiting their activities may retard skin aging. α-Glucosidase and α-amylase, inhibitors need to be explored for the benefit of postprandial hyperglycemia in diabetic patients. Activities of tyrosinase, hyaluronidase and xanthine oxidase inhibitors of these enzymes are increasingly important ingredients in cosmetics and medications to protect the skin against hyperpigmentation and skin aging. Inhibition effects were investigated using the P. lingua extracts at 50-200 μg/mL concentrations. The expression levels of enzyme inhibitions activities were decrease in dependent-concentrations manner when P. lingua extracts were treated.

        Antioxidant and skin health-enhancing activities of wild indigo (Baptisia tinctoria) root extracts

        This study aimed to investigate the effects of wild indigo (Baptisia tinctoria) root extract as a functional food material, in terms of antioxidant and skin health-related activities. Both water and ethanol (50/50, v/v) extracts showed high phenol content. They were evaluated for antioxidant activity, such as 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), antioxidant protection factor (PF), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). While the DPPH radical scavenging activities of water and ethanol extracts were 84.23% and 89.30%, respectively, at 200 μg/mL total phenol content (TPC), the ABTS radical cation scavenging activities were 51.39% and 48.10%, respectively. The water and ethanol extracts also showed desirable antioxidant PF levels of 1.18 and 1.16, respectively. Furthermore, the antioxidant effects on TBARS significantly increased by 37.31% and 51.43%, respectively, in 200 μg/mL of water and ethanol extracts. Both the extracts showed high dose-dependent collagenase inhibitory activities, up to 27.60% and 77.39%, respectively. The ethanol extract showed an elastase inhibitory activity of 37.21%; the tyrosinase inhibitory effect (which facilitates natural skin-whitening) was 59.26% at 200 μg/mL TPC. The hyaluronidase activity inhibition, related to anti-inflammatory activity, was 20.02% for the water extract and 14.30% for the ethanol extract, at 200 μg/mL TPC. Therefore, B. tinctoria extract has potential applications in cosmetics and food supplements due to its antioxidant and skin health promoting activities.

        울릉도 자생식물인 섬괴불나무(Lonicera morrowii A.Gray) 잎 추출물의 생리활성

        본 연구에서는 섬괴불나무 잎으로부터 phenol성 화합물의 생리활성 탐색을 통하여 기능성 소재로 활용 가능성을 살펴보았다. 인체에 무해한 용매인 열수와 ethanol로 추출 했을 때 열수는 3.53 mg/g, 40% ethanol은 2.82 mg/g의 TPC를 나타내었으며, 추출물을 이용하여 항산화 활성, xanthine oxidase (XOase), angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), α-glucosidase 억제효과 및 항균 활성을 검정하였다. 그 결과 섬괴불나무 잎의 열수와 ethanol 추출물 50-200 μg/mL TPC에서 농도의존적으로 DPPH 유리라디칼 소거활성 및 PF가 증가하는 경향을 보였고, 50 μg/mL의 저농도에서도 모두 매우 높은 활성을 나타내었다. XOase 저해효과에서는 200 μg/mL TPC에서 열수와 ethanol 추출물이 각각 76.35, 99.83%의 높은 저해효과 나타냈으며, ACE 저해효과 또한 200 μg/mL TPC에서 열수와 ethanol 추출물 각각 79.06, 87.14%의 저해효과를 확인하였다. α-Glucosidase 저해효과를 측정한 결과 200 μg/mL TPC에서 열수와 ethanol 추출물 각각 80.45, 63.58%의 저해효과를 보였다. 생육저해환으로 항균활성을 측정 결과 열수 추출물 200 μg/100 μL TPC에서 H. pylori, P. acne균에 대해 각각 11.5, 18.5 mm의 clear zone을 형성 하였고, ethanol 추출물 200 μg/100 μL 농도에서는 P. acne균에 대해 10 mm의 clear zone을 형성하였다. 따라서 본 연구를 통하여 섬괴불나무 잎 추출물의 항산화 활성, xanthine oxidase (XOase), angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), α-glucosidase 억제효과 및 항균 활성이 있다고 판단되었다. This study was performed to investigate total phenolic contents, anti-oxidant, biological disease-related enzyme inhibitory, and anti-microbial effects of extracts of Lonicera morrowii leaves prepared with water and 40% ethanol. Anti-oxidative activities of the extracts increased in a dose-dependent manner and were very high even at low phenolic concentration. At phenolic concentrations ranging between 50 and 200 μg/mL, the water and ethanol extracts inhibited 39.34-76.35 and 47.53-99.83% of xanthine oxidase activity, 30.21-79.06, and 59.40-87.14% of angiotensin converting enzyme activity, and 59.81-80.35 and 36.06-63.58% of α-glucosidase activity, respectively. All inhibitory effect were increased in a dose-dependent manner. In the paper disc agar diffusion assay against seven microbes, L. morrowii extracts had anti-bacteria activities against Helicobacter pylori, Propionibacterium acne but no effect against other bacteria. These results indicate that the extracts from L. morrowii leaves have the possibility to be developed as a physiologically functional source for prevention of adult diseases.

        It is not commonly recognized that yeast is responsible for food spoilage as well as food fermentation. Fermented beverages and foods have several factors that inhibit bacterial growth such as high contents of organic acids, sugars, salts, and/or alcohol; however, some yeast species can tolerate these stress factors and cause food spoilage. Specifically, during wine and beer fermentation, if some contaminated spoilage yeast species grow dominantly over fermentation starter yeast, the products would have undesirable flavor. More importantly, during storage of fermented kimchi and soy sauce, some spoilage yeast species slowly grow on the surface of the products and produce gases, which limits product shelf life and exportability. In this review, spoilage yeast species commonly found in fermented foods are introduced. Next, contamination routes, detection methods, and control methods of the spoilage yeast will be described.

        그린볼 사과(Green ball apple; Malus pumila Mill.) 적과의 항산화 및 elastase, collagenase, hyaluronidase 저해 효과

        그린볼 사과 적과의 phenolic compound를 50-200 μg/mL 농도로 처리하여 DPPH radical 소거능을 측정한 결과 200 μg/mL 농도의 물과 ethanol 추출물은 94.69과 92.24%의 DPPH radical 소거능을 나타내었다. ABTS radical 소거능은 200 μg/mL 농도의 물과 ethanol 추출물에서 각각 100.30과 99.16%의 ABTS radical 소거능을 나타내었다. PF는 200 μg/mL 농도의 물과 ethanol 추출물에서 각각 1.76, 1.76 PF를 나타내었다. TBARs는 phenolic compound 농도가 200 μg/mL에서 물과 ethanol 추출물 각각 101.46, 99.64%의 항산화능을 나타내었다. 염증에 관련이 있는 HAase의 저해 효과를 측정한 결과 150 μg/mL 농도의 물과 ethanol 추출물은 각각 33.28, 32.14%의 저해효과를 나타내었다. 미용식품활성을 나타내는 elastase 저해활성을 측정해 본 결과 phenolic compound 농도가 200 μg/mL에서 물과 ethanol 추출물 각각 47.33, 40.92%의 저해 효과를 나타내었다. 피부의 주름과 탄력에 관련이 있는 collagenase 저해 효과를 측정한 결과 200 μg/mL 농도의 물과 ethanol 추출물은 각각 46.19, 65.58%를 나타내었다. 따라서 그린볼 사과 적과는 항산화, 항염증, 주름 개선 등 다양한 생리활성을 나타내는 기능성 소재로 개발이 가능할 것으로 판단되었다. In this study, the anti-oxidative, health functional, and beauty food activities of water and ethanol extracts from newly bred Ruby S apple (Malus pumila Mill.). The results of measuring the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity by treating the phenolic compound with thinning green ball apple at a concentration of 50-200 μg/mL showed that the water and ethanol extracts at a concentration of 200 μg/mL showed 94.69 and 92.24%, respectively. 2,2'-Azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline- 6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging activities showed 100.30 and 99.16%, respectively, in 200 μg/mL of water and ethanol extracts. The water and ethanol extracts of Green ball showed antioxidant protection factor of 1.76 PF 1.76, respectively. The water and ethanol extracts showed 101.46 and 99.64% anti-oxidative effect on thiobarbituric acid reactive substances at phenolic concentration of 200 μg/mL. The water and ethanol extracts showed 33.28 and 32.14% hyaluronidase inhibition, respectively, at phenolic concentration of 150 μg/mL. The water and ethanol extracts showed 47.33 and 40.92% elastase inhibition and 46.19 and 65.58% collagenase inhibition at phenolic concentration of 200 μg/mL, respectively. About these experiments, thinning Green ball apple was found to exhibit anti-oxidation activity as well as hyaluronidase, elastase and collagenase inhibitory activities. Therefore, thinning Green ball apple can be considered a potential sources for new functional materials.
