        The Burden of Acute Pesticide Poisoning and Pesticide Regulation in Korea

        <P><B>Background</B></P><P>This study aimed to estimate the burden of acute pesticide poisoning and to determine its trend with recently implemented pesticide regulations.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) were calculated as the sum of years of life lost (YLLs) and years lived with disability (YLDs) due to acute pesticide poisoning using the methods of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2013. The values of YLLs, YLDs, and DALYs were stratified by sex, age groups, intentionality of poisoning, and causative agents.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>From 2006 to 2014, DALYs decreased by 69% (from 69,550 to 21,742). The decreasing tendency of DALYs was especially marked from 2011. The total burden of acute pesticide poisoning was mainly caused by YLLs and intentional pesticide poisoning. The highest DALYs due to acute pesticide poisoning occurred in those in their 40s and 50s; however, the decreased rates of DALYs were higher in those aged 10–49 years than in those aged more than 50 years. Herbicides including paraquat contributed to the largest proportion of total DALYs.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>As this is the first study to quantify the burden of acute pesticide poisoning using DALYs, our results provide comprehensive evidence of the importance of using strict regulations to prevent public health hazards due to acute pesticide poisoning.</P>

      • Emergency department visits due to pesticide poisoning in South Korea, 2006-2009

        <P><I>Objectives.</I> The objective of this study is to estimate the numbers and rate of emergency department visits in South Korea that are the result of pesticide poisoning and to describe their epidemiologic characteristics. <I>Materials and methods.</I> Data collected from the National Emergency Department Information System were used to estimate the number of emergency department visits due to pesticide poisoning in South Korea for the period spanning 2006 through 2009. Emergency department visits for pesticide poisoning were defined by ICD-10 codes (T60.0-T60.9). National estimates and their 95% confidence intervals were calculated per 100 000 population. <I>Results.</I> Among the 65 877 total poisoning-related emergency department visits in the data, 11 985 (18.2%) were emergency department visits resulting from pesticide poisoning. During the study period, the annual average rate of emergency department visits for pesticide poisoning was 26.8 per 100 000 population. Intentional pesticide poisoning (51.4%) was more frequent than unintentional. The fatality rate from intentional pesticide poisoning was also higher than that from unintentional or cases where the intention was unknown. In terms of age-specific rates of emergency department visits for pesticide poisoning, they increased with age, as did the gap between men and women. <I>Conclusions.</I> This study provide estimates for emergency department visits due to pesticide poisoning at the national level and suggests that pesticide poisonings, both intentional and unintentional, require significant public health interventions in South Korea.</P>

        변화단계 이론에 근거한 취약계층 노인의 식 행위 관련 요인분석

        Purpose: This study was to explore the factors affecting on Dietary Behavior Change of the vulnerable elderly based on the Stage of Change. Methods: This study was a secondary analysis of the data collected from 1,262 elderly who were participated in the case management program. Total 984 participants who responded all questionnaire were included in the analysis. The variables included general characteristics, health behavior, health status, and dietary behavior stage. The data collected were analyzed by descriptive statistics, trend test and multi-variate logistic regressions. Results: about twenty four percent of the vulnerable elderly subject was pre-contemplation stage and 46.1% of them was contemplation stage of dietary behavior. Having a depressive mood, dependance of Instrumental Activity of Daily living, and being medicaid affected on starting or on maintaining healthy dietary behavior in vulnerable elderly negatively. Conclusion: The tailored nutritional intervention depending on dietary behavior stage are needed for the vulnerable elderly to improve the health. The program which can maintain the function remained of elderly and give psychological support together will be more effective. 본 연구는 변화단계 이론에 근거하여 취약계층 노인의 식 행위 변화단계를 파악하고, 식 행위 이행에 영향을 미치는 요인을 파악하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 맞춤형 방문건강관리 대상자 중 노인 사례관리 대상에게 수집된 기초자료를 이용한 2차 분석연구로, 1,262명 중 설문문항에 모두 응답한 984명을 분석대상으로 하였다. 변화단계이론을 기반으로 한 식 행위 변화단계 문항과 일반적 특성, 건강상태, 건강행위로 구성된 설문지를 통해 수집된 자료를 담당 사업부서의 협조로 제공받았다. 자료는 서술적 통계분석, 경향성 분석 및 다변량 로지스틱 회귀분석을 통해 분석하였다. 연구결과 대상자의 24.6%가 계획전단계였으며, 46.1%는 계획단계로 나타났다. 우울할수록, 도구적 일상생활수행능력에 의존적일 수록, 의료급여의 경우가 식 행위 이행에 부정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 취약계층 노인의 영양 상태는 생리적 변화뿐만 아니라 인구학적 특성, 사회경제적 수준 및 건강상태에 영향을 받기 때문에 노인에서의 식 행위 변화단계와 행위에 있어서의 장애요인에 중점을 둔 맞춤형 영양중재가 개발되어야 한다. 특히 식 행위 이행을 위해서는 보유능력을 유지하고 정서적 지지를 함께 제공한다면 더 효과적일 수 있다.

        신재생에너지 보급량 예측을 위한 시스템다이내믹스 모델 개발

        Korea is implementing strong regulatory derives such as Feed in Tariff to provide incentives for renewable energy developers. But if the government is planning to increase the renewable capacity with only "Price policy" not considering the investors behavior in the competitive electricity market, the policy would be failed. It is necessary system thinking and simulation model analysis to decide government`s incentive goal. This study is focusing on the assesment of the competitiveness of renewable energy with the current Feed in Tariff incentives compared to the traditional energy source, specially coal and gas. The simulation results show that the market penetration of renewable energy with the current Feed-in-Tariff level is about 60-70% of the government goal under condition that the solar energy and fuel cell are assumed to provide the whole capacity set in the governmental goal. If the contribution from solar and fuel cell is lower than planned, the total penetration of renewable energy will be dropped more. Notably, Wind power turned out to be proved only 10% of government goal because of its low availability.

        ESTIMATION OF ORGAN DOSES AMONG DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL RADIATION WORKERS IN SOUTH KOREA

        <P>This study aimed to estimate the radiation organ doses from occupational exposure in 94 396 Korean medical radiation workers. Data on badge doses (i.e. personal dose equivalent at 10 mm) between 1996 and 2011 obtained from a national dosimetry registry, survey data from 2012 to 2013, and organ dose conversion coefficients provided by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) were used for the estimation. The highest mean cumulative badge doses (26.87 mSv) were observed in radiologists, followed by radiologic technologists (15.96 mSv). Male workers exhibited higher mean cumulative badge doses, across occupational groups. The estimated organ doses showed similar trends with those of badge doses. Organs located outside the apron's coverage such as the thyroid showed higher mean organ doses than those protected by the apron. Our findings could contribute to future radiation epidemiologic studies to investigate health effects from occupational radiation exposure in Korea.</P>

      • Study of the compression and wear-resistance properties of freeze-cast Ti and Ti‒5W alloy foams for biomedical applications

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Ti and Ti‒5wt% W alloy foams were produced by freeze-casting process and their mechanical behaviors were compared. The Ti‒5W alloy foam showed a typical acicular Widmanstätten α/β structure with most of the W dissolved in the β phase. An electron-probe microanalysis revealed that approximately 2wt% W was uniformly dissolved in the Ti matrix of Ti‒5W alloy foam with few partially dissolved W particles. The compressive-yield strength of Ti‒5W alloy foam (~323MPa) was approximately 20% higher than that of the Ti foam (~256MPa) owing to the solid-solution-strengthening effect of W in the Ti matrix, which also resulted in a dramatic improvement in the wear resistance of Ti‒5W alloy foam. The compressive behaviors of the Ti and Ti‒5W alloy foams were predicted by analytical models and compared with the experimental values. Compared with the Gibson-Ashby and cellular-lattice-structure-in-square-orientation models of porous materials, the orientation-averaging method provided prediction results that are much more accurate in terms of both the Young's modulus and the yield strength of the Ti and Ti‒5W alloy foams.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Manufacturing of Ti and Ti-W alloy foams by freeze-casting method. </LI> <LI> Compressive test of Ti and Ti-W alloy foams. </LI> <LI> Evaluation of wear resistance of Ti and Ti-W alloy foams. </LI> <LI> Analytical prediction of the Young's moduli and yield strengths of Ti and Ti-5W alloy foams. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        센서 네트워크의 효율적인 구성을 위해서는 이종(異種)의 센서들을 두고 그룹으로 나누어 관리 하여야 하며 그룹 내의 안전하고 효율적인 통신을 위해 그룹키가 필요하고 이 키는 주기적으로 갱신되어야 한다. 본 논문에서는 그룹키를 갱신할 때에 필요한 정보들을 이용하여 그룹키 정보를 교환하는 엔티티간의 상호 인증을 함으로써 안전하게 그룹키를 관리할 수 있는 메커니즘을 제안하였다.
