Background and Objectives : Cisplatin (CP) is a major chemotherapeutic agent for head and neck cancer. However, cancer cells can get drug resistance through recovering the DNA damage by CP. Mithramycin A (MA) can inhibit gene expression of multidrug resistance gene 1, c-myc or h-ras. The goal of this study is to evaluate the therapeutic effect of MA alone and combination of MA and CP on head and neck cancer cell lines. Materials and Methods : Two head and neck cancer cell lines (AMC-HN4, AMC-HN7) were treated with MA. The cellular proliferation, apoptosis and protein expression were measured with XTT assay, FACS analysis, and western blotting, respectively after MA treatment in cell lines. In order to know the combination effect of MA with CP, the cancer cell lines were treated with MA, CP, and MA/CP combination, and cellular proliferation, apoptosis and expression of apoptosis-associated proteins were measured. Results : MA inhibited the proliferation of head and neck cancer cells and induce dapoptosis. Increase of caspase activation, PLC-?1 fragmentation and percent apoptosis by MA treatment was blocked by z-VAD-fms, but not blocked by N-Acetyl Cystein. Combination of MA and CP significantly inhibited cancer cell growth and increased apoptosis compared to MA and CP alone, and it also suppressed the expression of anti-apoptotic proteins such as XIAP and Mcl-1. Conclusions : The present study suggests that MA alone andMA/CP combination chemotherapy could be a potential regiment for the control of the head and neck cancer.

Current fire safety in the construction sites has developed piecemeal over a considerable period of time. However, the law and regulation of fire safety is insufficient to protect fire in the construction sites. The frequency of fire in the construction sites is very rare but it brings longterm deterioration durability of building structure and large scale industrial calamity. There are many process of works and each work deals with many kind of flammable material, so it is very difficult find a proper safety fire prevention. This study executed the questionnaire and fire experiment of the welding work to provide effective fire prevention counterplan.
A Case of Polycythemia Vera with Splinter Hemorrhages

Once splinter hemorrhage can be considered as a pathognomonic sign of subacute bacterial endocarditis. But it can also be associated with a variety of systemic disorders that increase capillary fragility or primary nail bed involvement in dermatologic disorders. The cause of splinter hemorrhage can usually be established by careful history and physical examination. We report a case of 33-year-old man with splinter hemorrhages, who had polycythemia vera.

<P>We have developed a facile and rapid synthesis of a highly fluorescent nanocrystal (NC) library, based on ultrasonic and combinatorial chemistry. Among a total of 66 tZAIS ((Zn<SUB><I>x</I></SUB>Ag<SUB><I>y</I></SUB>In<SUB><I>z</I></SUB>)S<SUB>2</SUB>) NCs, many NCs are highly fluorescent upon UV irradiation, and are categorized into blue, green, yellow, orange, and red by their distinct emission wavelength ranges. The tZAIS NCs not only have long fluorescence lifetimes, but also show comparable or even higher brightness than QDs without photoblinking in single NC analysis. Currently, nanotechnology is widely applied in various industrial fields and is rapidly emerging as a promising future technology. In food industries, nanotechnology is used to enhance food quality and safety. Numerous cutting-edge studies on the advantages of nanotechnology have been conducted in the fields of food processing, food ingredients and additives, food packaging, and food engineering for optimal health. The market for these areas of research has grown steadily, and is expected to continue to do so. Because of this, R&D for nanotechnology that can be used effectively in food industries is being performed by several companies, as well as in academic research institutions around the world. This review describes the recent global R&D trends that have been in progress for two key areas: food processing and food packaging.
