The depressive patients can be divided into two subgroups by presence and absence of pain symptoms. Those without pain symptoms have blunted pain sensitivity whereas those with pain have normal range of pain sensitivity, and are clinically characterized by anxiety and irritability. The aim of the study is to test if these clinical profiles of the depressives with pain symptoms are related with reduced level of brain serotonin(5-HT). Forty four mice were randomly divided into two groups : one group to be bred with tryptophan free diet and the other with normal control diet, each for 4 weeks. Before the beginning of the breeding period, measured were locomotor activity by open field test, anxiety by elevated plus maze and nociceptive sensitivity by tail flick test, before and after forced swimming(FS). During each FS, duration of immobilization was also measured. The sable sets of measurements were repeated at the end of the breeding period. The brain 5-HT and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid(5-HIAA) were measured by high performance liquid chromatography. The results were as follows 1.Four weeks of tryptophan free diet reduced significantly body weight, brain weight, and levels of 5-HT and 5-HIAA in the whole brain. 2.Tryptophan depletion did not influence basal nociceptive sensitivity as measured by tail flick latency before FS. The normal blunting of the pain sensitivity induced by forced swimming was preserved in the tryptophan depleted group. 3.Tryptophan depletion did not influence general locomotor activity in open field. 4.Tryptophan depletion increased significantly time spent on the open arms at the elevated plus maze test done before FS. This anxiolytic-like effect was reduced by FS. 5.Tryptophan depletion did not influence duration of immobilization during FS. From these results, it is suggested that the genesis of the depression with pain symptoms is not medicated by quantitative reduction of brain serotonin

A new barley (Hordeum Vulgare L.) cultivar ‘Wooho’ was developed by Honam National Agricultural Research Institute (HARI) in 2005. It had good forage characteristics (smooth awn) and showed high forage production in the 5 locations of paddy field. ‘Wooho’ was developed from the cross between SB87125〔Oweol//(SB77011)/SB79124 (Bengei//Hagane/ Bunong) ///Y7213-SD607-CM67-Milyang12〕and SB83024 (1012.2-IB65/Ol//Samheung/Suwon18-Gang) made in 1994. Subsequent selections were made throuhg bulked and pedigree selection methods. SB94104-B-B-B-B-79 was selected for smooth awn and agronomic performance in 2001 and placed in preliminary yield trial. In 2003, it was designated as ‘Suwon 396’ and performed regional yield trials. The average forage yield of ‘Wooho’ were 11.0 MT/ha and 10.9 MT/ha at May 20 and drought stage, respectively. The shattering rate of ‘Wooho’ was lower than that of ‘Ol’. It showed superior forage quality to the check variety when harvest early drought stage. ‘Wooho’ would be recommended as a cultivar of barley for whole crop forage with smooth awn.

Form a was crystallizd from sodium hydroxide-hydrochloric acid and from c was obtained by crystallization from toluene. Form b and d was crystallized from methanol under the different temperature conditions. Relative rates of dissolution and solubility of four crystal forms of piroxicam in distilled water were measured.

The genetic segregation and epistatic effects of blue aleurone genes(bl’s) in barley were examined. And also the linkage relationships among bl genes and between each of bl gene and chlorina (fc) on chromosome Ⅰ and hooded(K) gene on chromosome Ⅳ were estimated. The conclusions of the experiments were as follows. 1. The blue aleurone characters in barley were considered to be controlled by 5 pairs of dominant complementary genes. Therefore the white aleurone phenotypes were resulted that any one of these genes is recessive homozygous state. 2. The Korean domestic cultivars of barley, Doosan #8 and Kangbori, which shows white aleurone color, seemed to be possessed bl₂ and bl₃ gene respectively. However about 10% of the blue aleurone kernels were segregated in the F₂ seeds of cross between Kangbori× Blx, as in the case of Kangbori cultuar itself. It is thought to another factor or factors are responsible for the expression of the bl₃ gene at recessive homozygous state in Kangbori. 3. The bl₄ gene which expresses the red aleurone color at the recessive homozygous state considered to show different epistatic effect upon bl and bl₃ gene respectively. 4. There were sparse linkage relationship between bl₅ gene of BGM₁₂₂ and bl₂ gene of Nepal, and it is postulated that the bl₅ gene is located on the distal portion of the long arm of chromosome Ⅰ. 5. The gene bl₃ and bl₄ showed linkage relationships with the genetic marker gene K respectively, and the possible gene order on the chromosome Ⅳ appeared to be bl-bl₃-K-bl₄, on the basis of the estimated recombination values.

An Epidurogram is an Alternative Diagnostic Tool for Discovering the Site of CSF Leakage in Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension Sun Ok Song, M.D., Sae Yeun Kim, M.D., Young Woo Cho, M.D. Gi Seung Jung, M.D., Yeung Ho Suh, M.D., and Ju Hyun Chang, M.D. Department of Anesthesiology, College of Medicine, Yeungnam University, Daegu, Korea Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is a rare disease with a symptom of a postural headache, which is aggravated by the erect position and relieved by the supine position. This persistent headache is dramatically improved with an epidural blood patch. C6-7 is the most common site of leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the subarachnoid space in SIH. The diagnosis of SIH is based on a typical history. It is supported by low CSF pressure in a lumbar puncture and diffuse dural enhancement on a brain MRI, and confirmed by a CSF leakage site on a radioisotope cistemography or on a myelography. However, we had two patients of SIH whose CSF leakage site was not found on cisternography. We tried an epidurogram just before an injection of autologous blood for an epidural blood patch, and found specific finding on the epidurogam suggesting the CSF leakage site, such as a filling defect on C6-7 during dye injection, and delayed washout of dye around the filling defect on the epidurogram performed at C7-T1/C6-7. Therefore, we suggest that an epidurogram is occasionally a useful diagnostic tool when looking for the site of CSF leakage in SIH. (Korean J Anesthesiol 2001;41: 114~119)
