This study was focused on survey of sewage characteristics and investigation of operational efficiencies in terms of BOD, SS, TN and TP for treatment facility built on on-site apartment building. The oxidation ditch process of 40㎥/day capacity was applied for sewage treatment system. The results of the research showed that earth household had 3.2 dwellers with a sewage flow rate of 242Lpcd in average. The sewage flow rate was particulary low on Saturday and Sunday. The average sewage concentration of BOD, SS, TN and TP were 145㎎/L, 101㎎/L, 33.3㎎/L and 2.8㎎/L, respectively. BOD removal was observed to be 91.7% on average while SS removal to be 77.0% on average. Denitrification/nitrification were accomplished during intermittently aerated processes and removal rate of nitrogen was 50.0% in terms of total nitrogen. Removal efficiency of phosphorus was 47.7% in terms of total phosphorus. The average effluent concentration of BOD, SS, TN and TP were 12.0㎎/L, 19.5㎎/L, 17.0㎎/L and 1.5㎎/L, respectively. Observed microbial yield coefficient was 0.16gMLSS/gBOD. This experiment may prove that intermittently aerated oxidation ditch process can be employed to treat organic matter as well as nutrients in sewage that are generated from such sources as apartment building and community area.

Bipolar hip arthroplasty has been used in an effort to decrease the acetabular erosion which is certain to develop after femoral head replacement. There is some contmversy concerning the bipolar hip arthroplasty performed in osteonecrosis of femoral head. Analysis was performed on the thirty-nine hips of thirty-seven patients to evaluate the clinical and radiological results of bipolar hip arthroplasty. They were followed at least 2 years after operation with an average of 2 years and 2 months. Clinically, the Harris Hip Score improved from 47 to 93 points at the final follow-up. There were no significant complications. Radiologically, there was about 8 percent acetabular cartilage erosion. There was no case of acetabular bony erosion. The motion at both bearings was well maintained with more motion at the outer bearing. The average range of motion was 46 degrees with an average of 26 degrees at the outer bearing and 20 degrees at the inner bearing. Even though the short term results were satisfactory, long term studies will be necessary, especially to determine the extent of the acetabular bony erosion.

Oxidative stress has been proposed to be a major cause of aging and many age-related diseases. Peroxynitrite ($ONOO^-$), formed from the reaction of superoxide ($^{\bullet}O_2{^-}$) and nitric oxide (NO), is a cytotoxic species that can oxidize various cellular components, such as proteins, lipids, and DNA. The present study investigated whether dimethyl lithospermate (DML), isolated from Salvia miltiorrhiza, modulates age-related increases of $ONOO^-$, NO, and reactive species (RS) levels and expressions of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). For this study, 20-month-old rats were intraperitoneally injected with 5 or 10 mg/kg/day of DML, and 6-month-old rats were used as young control animals. Our results indicated that DML reduces $ONOO^-$ levels in a dose-dependent manner. The data also revealed that DML has significant inhibitory effects on NO metabolites and RS generation in a dose-dependent manner during aging. Furthermore, the results of Western blot analysis revealed that DML treatment reduces age-associated increases in COX-2 and iNOS expressions. Thus, this study found that DML caused the decrease of renal oxidative stress and COX-2 and iNOS expressions in aged rats. The significance of the present study is the finding of DML in its potential application against the aging process.

Purpose Technological advancements and innovations in the use of microneedles for medicinal purposes are constantly emerging. To promote the marketing of microneedles, the safety of microneedle systems during application and storage must be highlighted. Therefore, investigating the toxicity and skin safety of these materials is important. We aimed to determine the physicochemical properties of influenza-antigen-coated microneedle (Influenza MN) and the skin irritation, acute toxicity, and specific antibody production in vivo after applying the coated microneedles to rat skin. Methods We prepared Influenza MN patches using polylactic acid. The protein antigen coating and microneedle morphology were identified using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and SEM–energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and the coating was assayed using a bicinchoninic acid kit. We used the Draize method to assess skin irritation after applying the patches to rat skin and serum biomarkers to assess the systemic toxicity of the patches. We used an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to determine the antigen-specific immune response induced by the patches in vivo. Results The antigenic protein coated on the microneedles was visualized by SEM and confirmed by EDS. The protein content of the patches was 96.41 ± 3.18 μg. Treatment with the patches did not cause any significant skin irritation as determined by the Draize method. Applying the patch did not cause systemic toxicity in the rats according to the serum biomarkers but induced a strong antigen-specific immune response in vivo. Conclusion Applying the Influenza MN patches did not cause significant skin irritation or dermal toxicity in rats but induced antigen-specific immune responses in vivo.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a kind of benign inflammatory lesion involving synovial membrane, characterized by yellow-grayish colored villous nodules of synovial membrane, formed by accumulation of cholesterol and hemosiderin with numerous cleftings of synovial membrane. This occurs most commonly in the knee joint as a monoarticular proliferative process. The deveiopment of this disease in the hip joint is rare and moreover, the diagnosis is not easy. Early diagnosis of hip joint involvement is important because destruction of femoral head and acetabulum is the ultimate outcome if treatment is not initiated. A definitive treatment for this disease process is not yet known. In this paper, we report a case of pigmented villonodular synovitis of the hip joint with a review of the literature. It was identified in a 23-year-old young lady who was treated by synovectomy.

Supracondylar fracture of femur is not well suited to internal fixation. A wide canal, a thin cortex, comminution and compound wound make open reduction more difficult. Especially, type C2 and C3 on AO classification is problematic. The cases of nine patients who had type C2 or C3 fracture including three open fractures and deficient medial-cortical buttress were reviewed. Stable fixation was achieved with the lateral condylar buttress plate. Additional stabilization with a medial plate and bone graft from the iliac crest was applied in all nine patients. At an average duration of follow-up nineteen months (range from twelve to forty-eight months), all of the fracture had healed. Evaluation of the functional outcome revealed two excellent, three good and four fair results. In three patient, less than 90 degree of flexion of the knee was present and in six, the arc of flexion was limited to between 90 and 110 degrees. One patient had two centimeter shortening, one had medial screw loosening which need not additional fixation. The results of our study suggest that, for the treatment of patients who have a difficult fracture in whom stable fixation of the distal part of the femur cannot be achieved with a condylar buttress plate because of medial cortical communition, a short distal condylar fragment, or loss of metaphyseal bone, double-plating is indicated.
