Experimental Evaluation of Evaporative Cooler Using Agro Materials

        R. RAMKUMAR,M. Kesavan,A. RAGUPATHY 대한설비공학회 2015 International Journal of Air-Conditioning and Refr Vol.23 No.4

The purpose of the study is to investigate the direct evaporate cooler in hot and humid regions with two different types of agro-based materials. In our experimental study, the locally available agro materials luffa (Sponge Gourd), zizanioides (Vetiver) were used with various thickness and the experimental results were compared with mathematical values. The operating parameters of pad thickness, air velocity, were changed and the performance of the cooler was analyzed. A test rig was designed and fabricated to collect experimental data. The performance of the evaporative cooler was evaluated based on the ambient condition. The analysis of the data indicated that cooling saturation efficiency improve with decrease of air velocity and higher pad thickness. It was shown that zizanioides-based pad with 160mm thickness has the higher performance (88%) at 4.5 m/s air velocity in comparison with luffa pad materials. The experimental results of outlet air temperature and number of transfer units (NTU) were compared with mathematical model. The test results were within the limit of 15% and 10% to mathematical values.

      • Coupled temperature-displacement modeling to study the thermo-elastic instability in disc brakes

        Ramkumar, E.,Mayuram, M.M. Techno-Press 2012 Coupled systems mechanics Vol.1 No.2

Macroscopic hot spots formed due to the large thermal gradients at the surface of the disc brake rotor, make the rotor to fail or wear out early. Thermo-elastic deformation results in contact concentration, leading to the non uniform distribution of temperature making the disc susceptible to hot spot formation. The formation of one hot spot event will predispose the system to future hot spotting at the same location. This leads to the complete thermo-elastic instability in the disc brakes; multitude parameters are responsible for the thermo elastic instability. The predominant factor is the sliding velocity and above a certain sliding velocity the instability of the brake system occurs and hot spots is formed in the surface of the disc brake. Commercial finite element package ABAQUS(R) is used to find the temperature distribution and the result is validated using Rowson's analytical model. A coupled analysis methodology is evolved for the automotive disc brake from the transient thermo-elastic contact analysis. Temperature variation is studied under different sliding speeds within the operation range.

Sensitivity Analysis of Geometrical Parameters of a Switched Reluctance Motor with Modified Pole Shapes

        M. Balaji,S. Ramkumar,V. Kamaraj 대한전기학회 2014 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.9 No.1

A major problem in Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) is torque ripple, which causes undesirable acoustic noise and vibration. This work focuses on reducing the undesirable torque ripple in SRM by modifying stator and rotor geometry. This paper presents a comparative study on torque ripple minimization in SRM with modified pole shapes such as stator pole taper, stator pole face with non-uniform air gap and pole shoe attached to rotor pole. Further this paper presents a detailed sensitivity analysis of the effect of different geometrical parameters that alter the pole face shapes on the performance of SRM. The analysis is performed using finite-element method considering average torque and torque ripple as performance parameters. Based on the analysis, a design combining stator pole taper with non-uniform air gap is proposed to improve the torque characteristics of SRM. The dynamic characteristics of the proposed design are simulated and the results show satisfactory reduction in torque ripple.

Fixed and Variable Relationship Models to Define the Volume-Value Relationship in Spinal Fusion Surgery: A Macroeconomic Analysis Using Evidence-Based Thresholds

        Sergio M. Navarro,William Case Frankel,Heather S. Haeberle,Prem N. Ramkumar 대한척추신경외과학회 2018 Neurospine Vol.15 No.3

Objective: Increased surgical volume has been associated with improved patient outcomes at the surgeon and hospital level. To date, clinically meaningful stratified volume benchmarks have yet to be defined for surgeons or hospitals in the context of spinal fusion surgery. The objective of this study was to establish evidence-based thresholds using outcomes and cost to stratify surgeons and hospitals performing spinal fusion surgery by volume. Methods: Using 155,788 patients undergoing spinal fusion surgery, we created and applied 4 models using stratum-specific likelihood ratio (SSLR) analysis of a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. This statistical approach was used to generate 4 sets of volume thresholds predictive of increased length of stay (LOS) and increased cost for surgeons and hospitals. Results: SSLR analysis of the 2 ROC curves by annual surgical volume produced 3 or 4 distinct volume categories. Analysis of LOS by annual surgeon spinal fusion volume produced 4 strata: low, medium, high, and very high. Analysis of LOS by annual hospital spinal fusion volume produced 3 strata: low, medium, and high. No relationship between volume and cost could be clearly defined based on the generation of ROC curves for surgeons or hospitals offering spinal fusion. Conclusion: This study used evidence-based thresholds to identify a direct, variable relationship model between volume and outcomes of spinal fusion surgery, using LOS as a surrogate, for both surgeons and hospitals. A fixed relationship model was identified between surgeon and hospital volume and cost, as no statistically meaningful relationship could be established.

Performance assessment of microwave treated WC insert while turning AISI 1040 steel

Durwesh Jhodkar,M. Amarnath,H. Chelladurai,J. Ramkumar 대한기계학회 2018 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.32 No.6

This study attributed to post treatment of tungsten carbide (WC) inserts using microwave irradiation. Tungsten carbide inserts were subjected to microwave radiation (2.45 GHz) to enhance its performance in terms of reduction in tool wear rate, cutting force surface roughness and improvement in tool life. Performance of tungsten carbide insert is very much affected by machine operating parameters i.e. speed, feed and depth of cut. An attempt has been made to investigate the effects of machining parameters on microwave treated tool inserts. This paper describes the comparative study of machining performance of untreated and microwave treated WC tool inserts used for turning of AISI 1040 steel. Machining performance has been evaluated in terms of flank wear, cutting force, surface roughness, tool wear mechanisms. Critical examinations of tool wear mechanisms and improvements in metallurgical properties such as microstructural change, phase activation of WC grains were identified using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results obtained from the turning using the microwave treated tool inserts showed a significant reduction tool wear thereby enhancing the surface quality of workpiece.

Effect of TiB2/Gr Hybrid Reinforcements in Al 7075 Matrix on Sliding Wear Behavior Analyzed by Response Surface Methodology

        S. Sivasankaran,K. R. Ramkumar,Fahad A. Al‑Mufadi,Osama M. Irfan 대한금속·재료학회 2021 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.27 No.6

Al 7075 alloy matrix reinforced with different weight percentage of titanium borides (TiB2, 0, 1.5, 3, 4.5 and 6 wt%) and1 wt% graphite (Gr) hybrid composites were synthesized by in-situ liquid metallurgy route, then the sliding wear characteristicswere performed and investigated in this research work. TiB2reinforced as 0, 1.5, 3, 4.5 and 6 wt% by the in situchemical reaction of KBF4and K2TiF6salts and 1 wt% Gr with the Al 7075 matrix were added constantly in the melt. Severalexperiments were carried out to examine the wear behavior of the fabricated composite specimens through a tribometer atambient temperature. The weight percentage of reinforcement (TiB2 particles), the applied load, the sliding velocity (SV),and the sliding distance (SD) were selected as process parameters at five different levels. The response surface methodology(RSM) was used to conduct the experiments as RSM is the feasible and accurate method employed for optimizing to set theparameters. To check the significance of the developed model by RSM, ANOVA and confirmatory tests were also accomplished. FESEM surface morphology was also carried out to illustrate the uniform dispersion of the TiB2–Gr particulatesin Al 7075 matrix. The predicted wear characteristics from the developed model were well agreed with the experimentalresults. The obtained results were explained that both the increase in the percentage of RF and SV have dropped the wearloss (WL) curve whereas the load at all SVs and the SDs were uplifted the WL. The worn surface morphology explainedthat the adhesive mechanisms were dominated during the sliding wear test. Further, severe and mild wear occurred duringhigher load and lower load respectively.

Effect of cold atmospheric pressure plasma gas composition on the surface and cyto-compatible properties of low density polyethylene (LDPE) films

        K. Navaneetha Pandiyaraj,A. Arun Kumar,M.C. RamKumar,K. Thirupugalmani,Avi Bendavid,Pi-Guey Su,S. Uday Kumar,P. Gopinath 한국물리학회 2016 Current Applied Physics Vol.16 No.7

In the present investigation, we have studied the influence of oxygen (O2) flow rate in the atmospheric pressure argon (Ar) plasma zone for improvement of the surface and cell compatible properties of LDPE film. Various characterization techniques such as contact angle (CA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), etc were used to investigate the hydrophilicity, surface chemistry and morphology of LDPE films respectively. Fowke's approximation method was used to evaluate the polar and dispersion components of the total surface energy of LDPE films using contact angle values of three testing liquids. Moreover T-peel and lap shear tests were used to analyze the adhesive strength of the surface modified LDPE films. Finally cyto-compatibility of the surface modified LDPE film was analyzed by in vitro cell compatibility analysis which includes the cell viability and adhesion using NIH-3T3 fibroblast cells. The results obtained from various characterization techniques evidently revealed that cold atmospheric pressure (CAP) plasma treatment enhanced the surface properties (hydrophilicity, surface morphology and surface chemistry) of LDPE film. Owing to tailored physico-chemical changes induced by the CAP plasma treatment facilitates improvement in adhesive strength as well as adhesion and proliferation of cells on the surface of LDPE films.

      • Finite element based free vibration analysis of sandwich FGM plates under hygro-thermal conditions using zigzag theory

        Aman Garg,Neeraj Kumar Shukla,M. Ramkumar Raja,Hanuman D. Chalak,Mohamed-Ouejdi Belarbi,Abdelouahed Tounsi,Li Li,A. M. Zenkour 국제구조공학회 2023 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.49 No.5

In the present work, a comparative study has been carried out between power, exponential, and sigmoidal sandwich FGM plates for free vibration conditions under hygro-thermal conditions. Rules of mixture is used to determine effective material properties across the thickness for power-law and sigmoid sandwich FGM plates. Exponential law is used to plot effective material properties for exponentially graded sandwich FGM plates. Temperature and moisture dependent material properties were used during the analysis. Free vibration analysis is carried out using recently proposed finite element based HOZT. Present formulation satisfies interlayer transverse stress continuity conditions at interfaces and transverse shear stressfree conditions at the plate's top and bottom surfaces. The present model is free from any penalty or post-processing requirements. Several new results are reported in the present work, especially for unsymmetric sandwich FGM plates and exponential and sigmoidal sandwich FGM plates.
