Expatriation, Snobbery, and Uncommon Commonness in Aaron’s Rod and Kangaroo

This essay reads two of Lawrence’s post-war novels, Aaron’s Rod (1922) and Kangaroo (1923) as an expatriate’s books about expatriation, by considering their contrasting approaches to relations between narrative, time, and place. It is divided into two parts. Part 1 considers how Aaron’s Rod enacts a drama of travel and expatriation in a semi-picaresque narrative structure that plays movement across national borders against movement within those borders. The novel’s complex structure―coupled with its close attention to cultural geographies―also allows Lawrence to articulate persistent anxieties about snobbery and the commonplace that inform the novel’s sense of what might count as truly aristocratic. Ultimately, those anxieties are expressed not only in the novel’s content and narrative structure but even in its language. Part 2 shows how Lawrence extends his confrontation with these formal and thematic problems in Kangaroo. This book renews and heightens the pressure on Lawrence’s ideas about the aristocratic and the common, by reframing them in the context of a burgeoning ideological war between fascism and socialism. The narrative form and language of Kangaroo generate resistance to the standard terms―democracy vs. aristocracy, socialism vs. communism, nationalism vs. internationalism―in which public debates about the postwar world were typically conducted. By its verbal magic, especially by its use of simile as the figurative embodiment of a principle of perpetual migration, this novel also conjures a new vision of the living universe, slipping the noose (if only for a time) of self, or culture, or society.

Validation of participant screening processes for simulator sickness management

The incidence of simulator sickness impacts all simulators that purport to provide drivers with a realistic experience. It has symptoms similar to motion sickness but can occur in the absence of physical motion of the observer. TRL was commissioned by the Scottish Executive to train 700 professional commercial vehicle drivers on two full mission truck simulators. Monitoring the incidence and effects of simulator sickness were paramount to the success of the programme. The aim of the driver training was to improve driver safety and fuel efficiency. Drivers on the programme completed a short familiarisation drive before completing two sets of four exercises, spending about an hour in the simulator in total. The simulator recorded drivers’ fuel efficiency, gear changes, speed, and time taken. Drivers also completed questionnaires as part of the training programme, one of which was the simulator sickness questionnaire (SSQ) proposed by Kennedy, Lane, Berbaum, and Lilienthal (1993), completed before and after driving the simulator. This enabled drivers’ subjective feelings of sickness to be recorded. Drivers rated their experience in the simulator very highly and showed significant improvements in their driving performance. Driver age and previous experience of motion sickness were both correlated with reported sickness level. There was also a significant correlation between drivers’ attitudes to technology and their susceptibility to simulator sickness. The implications of these results for the development of screening processes to reduce the incidence of simulator sickness, consequences for the use of simulators for driver training, and the effectiveness of such a screening questionnaire on a small simulator training programme are discussed.

“Foreign brands of course!” An ethnographic study exploring COO image perceptions and its influence on the preference of foreign clothing brands

This study explores Jordanian women’s preferences for foreign over local clothing brands through exploring perceptions of COO image. An ethnographic approach has been utilized, consisting of 3 data generation stages: interactive group interviews; shopping observations; and one on one responsive interviews. This study highlights new reasons for preference of foreign brands, overlooked in previous studies, stemming from self and social symbolism, consumption symbolism, status and conspicuous consumption and country of origin image. Furthermore, a key outcome of this research is the conceptualization of “Country of Purchase”. Implications are provided for local clothing brands on ways to improve their image in the eyes of Jordanian consumers – particularly women. Recommendations regarding local brands’ pricing, store atmosphere and image, and symbolic value are highlighted and discussed. Previous research is extended by exploring different reasons for foreign brand preference in developing countries and introduces an inductive and interpretive approach to obtain descriptive and rich data providing understanding of the phenomena of country of origin and country of purchase in the fashion industry.

The first Mutsu Bay Sea Surface Temperature Validation Experiment (MUBEX'95), which is joint research and observation experiment together with United Kingdom and Japan, has performed during the period 20th July to 27th August 1995 in Mutsu Bay, northern Honshu, Japan. The joint validation experiment has been planned to continue during three years from 1995. The stated objectives of MUBEX'95 are: (1). To validate the sea surface temperature (SST) observations made by four satellite radiometer systems, which are ERS-1/ATSR-1, ERS-2/ATSR-2, NOAA-12/AVHRR and NOAA-14lAVHRR, (2). To investigate the surface fluxes of heat and momentum and other processes thought to define the radiometric signal measured by infrared radiometry, (3). To investigate the sub pixel temperature and variability of the radiometric SST with reference to the SST at depth.

Corticotropin-releasing factor(CRF)를 분비하는 배양세포주는 CRF의 세포내 조절을 연구하는데 있어 훌륭한 체계가 된다. BE(2)-M17 및 BE(2)-C 세포주는 CRF를 생산하고 분비하며 forskolin 처치에 반응하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 저자들은 이들 세포주에 phorbol 에스테르, 즉 phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate(TPA) 0.8, 4, 10, 20 nM, 및 nitric oxide(NO)의 신호전달 경로의 자극제(1-${\mu}M$ nitroprusside)와 차단제($1{\mu}M$ nitroprusside+$300{\mu}M$ $N^G$-methyl-D-arginine), 그리고 interleukin-$1{\alpha}$ (IL $1{\alpha}$ ; 4, 20, 100, 500 pM)를 처치하여 CRF를 의미있게 증가시켰으나 세포외 분비는 C 세포에서만 변화되었다. NOS계의 자극제와 차단제는 C 세포의 forskolin 효과를 의미있게 변화시켰다. IL$1{\alpha}$는 두 세포주에 대한 영향이 없었다. 상기 제제들에 대한 이들 세포의 반응이 중추신경계 CRF 신경들과 관련하여 논의되었다.

비매너 주차 단속시스템

주차장에서 일어날 수 있는 비매너 주차로 인한 충돌을 사전에 예방하기 위한 단속시스템이다. 주차장에서 일어날 수 있는 장애인, 전기차 전용 주차구역에 일반차량 주차, 2개 차선을 물고 주차하는 차량이 있다. 위와 같은 차량을 딥러닝 객체인식 기능을 통해 비매너 주차를 감지하여 알려준다. 비매너 주차 상황이 찍힌 사진이나 영상을 학습데이터로 사용하여 상황을 인식할 수 있도록 학습데이터를 제작하고 그 상황을 인식하여 비매너 주차 유무를 판단한다. 주차장의 환경을 좀 더 쾌적하게 함으로써 주차장 이용자간 충돌을 줄이는데 목적이 있다. It is a enforcement system to prevent collisions caused by unmanageable parking that may occur in parking lots. There are handicapped people who can get up in parking lots, general vehicles parked in electric vehicle parking areas, and vehicles parked in two lanes. The vehicle above is detected and notified through the deep learning object recognition function. By using a picture or video of an unmanageable parking situation as learning data, the learning data is produced so that the situation can be recognized, and the situation is recognized to determine the presence or absence of unmanageable parking. The purpose is to reduce collisions between parking lot users by making the environment of the parking lot more comfortable.

‘여성 주체’의 관점에서 살펴본 박서원의 시 세계 연구

박서원의 시가 90년대 당시, 주목을 받았던 데에는 가부장적 질서에 대항하는 여성적 언어와 문법을 적극 찾고자 노력했던 당대의 시대 분위기 속에서도 기존의 이분법적인 논리로는 쉽사리 해석할 수 없는 대응 양상을 선보였다는 점에 있다. 본고에서는 고통을 현시하는 박서원시의 공간 감각과 고통에 대응하는 양상을 규명해보려 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 필요한 것이 ‘여성적 정체성’과 ‘여성 주체’를 구분하는 일이다. 상징계에 진입하면서 발행하는 호명에 대한 잠정적인 응답으로 ‘젠더 정체성’을 규정한다면, 상징계가 부여하는 정체성 호명이 좌초하거나 상징적 차원을 초과하는 영역에 ‘주체’가 위치해 있다. 상징계의 작동이 실패하고 어긋나는 지점에 ‘주체’가 생겨난다는 말은 상징계에 의해 정체성을 획득하더라도 주체는 그것으로 완전히 포섭될 수 없으며 늘 그것 이상의 잉여를 발생시킨다는 것을 의미한다. 닫힌 공간에 갇혀 있는 박서원의 공간 감각은 시에서 갇혀 있는 여성 주체의 모티브로 지속적으로 반복된다. 현실에서 경험한 트라우마는 시적 상황 안에서도 고스란히 재현되어 박서원의 여성 주체는 길을 잃고 폐쇄된 공간으로 내몰린 자로서의 공간감각 속에 존재한다. 이렇듯 닫힌 공간의 폐쇄적 공간 감각을 확인하는 일은 중요하지만 이것을 박서원 시의 성취와 개성이라고 보기는 어렵다. 그런 의미에서 주목해 볼 것은 갇힌 공간의 감각을 박서원의 여성 주체가 ‘어떤 방식으로 극복’해나가는지의 여부이다. 박서원의 여성 주체는 망가진 삶 속에서 자신을 좁고, 폐쇄된 공간에 갇힌 존재로 인식하고 있지만 역설적으로 바로 그로 인해 자기 몸에 찾아오는 발작과 고통, 환각의 거대한 밀어닥침을 자기 존재의 힘으로 흡수하여 공간적 한계를 극복하려는 양상을 선보인다. 고통을 자부심으로 전환하는 이 과정은 고통스러운 희생자이자 억압적이고 가부장적 체제의 일방적인 여성 피해자로 자신의 정체성을 규정하려는 세계의 시선에 맞서 그것을 좌초시키려는 무의식적인 응전의 힘, 의식적인 저항의 노력과 함께 박서원 시의 가장 인상적인 대응 양상을 만들어낸다. 박서원의 개성적인 여성 주체가 탄생하는 대목이 바로 여기이다. 박서원의 여성 주체는 공간을 초월한 존재로 자신을 정립해나간다기 보다는 공간에 위치지어지는 존재로 자신을 인식하되, 바로 그 공간성을 부정하지 않고 오히려 공간 내부를 확대시켜 양가적이고 모순적이며 충돌하는 대상과 가치들을 담아내는 방식으로 새로운 정체성을 만들어나간다. 박서원의 여성 주체는 뒤섞임 상태가 오히려 재탄생을 위한 능동적 가능성의 공간임을 자기 몸에서 현시하며 “모순적 다양성으로 구조화된 다차원적 지리학”을 선보일 수 있었다. 이 ‘모순적 다차원의 지리학’이 가능했던 것은 박서원의 여성 주체가 부여된 여성적 정체성을 수동적으로 받아들이지 않고 좌초시키기 위해 노력했으며 끊임없이, 격렬하게, 또한 간절하게 ‘다른 어딘가’를 향해 능동적으로 움직였기 때문이다. 파토스를 더욱 극단으로 몰아붙여 고통의 끝에 닿으려는 박서원의 여성주체는 절제의 시학이 아니라 과잉의 시학을 보여주었다. 그 결과 90년대의 한국 시단에는 여성을 포기하지 않으면서도 극복하는 새로운 ‘비-배제적 여성 주체’가 탄생할 수 있었다. In the 1990s, the poetry of Park Seo-won was noticed because she showed a middle-class response that could not be interpreted by the dichotomous logic of the past in an age-old atmosphere in which he tried to find feminine language and grammar against patriarchal order. In this paper, we try to identify the aspects of Park Seo-won 's sense of space and its response to pain. The first thing to do is to distinguish between 'female identity' and 'female subject'. If we define 'gender identity' as a tentative answer to the call to be made when we enter the symbol system, the 'subject' is located in the place where the symbolic name is stranded or exceeds the symbolic dimension. The fact that the symbolic system fails to operate and the 'subject' is created at the point where it is defeated means that even if the symbolic system obtains its identity, the subject can not be completely subsumed by it and always generates surplus. Park's sense of space continues to be repeated with the motif of a female subject trapped in poetry. The trauma experienced in reality is reproduced even in the poetic situation, and the subject of woman in Park is in the sense of space as a person who is lost to the closed space and is put into the closed space. It is important to confirm the closed spatial sense of the closed space, but it is difficult to see it as the achievement and personality of Park. In this sense, it is whether or not the woman subject of Park Seo-won will "overcome" the sense of confined space. Park's female subject perceives herself as a trapped person in a narrow, closed space in a broken life, but paradoxically, she absorbs a massive push of seizures, pain, hallucinations, To overcome the spatial limitations. This process of turning pain into pride is against the eyes of the world to define her identity as a painful victim and a one-sided female victim of oppressive and patriarchal regimes. This effort creates the most impressive aspect of Park's poetry with the power of unconscious reaction and conscious resistance. This is the place where Park's unique female subject is born. The subject of Park Seo-won recognizes himself as being positioned in space rather than establishing himself as a transcendent being. She does not deny the very space, but rather enlarges the interior of the space to create a new identity in a way that embraces both quantitative, contradictory, and conflicting objects and values. Park's female subject was able to show the multidimensional geography that is structured with contradictory diversity, manifesting in his body that the state of coalescence is a space of active possibility for rebirth. This 'contradictory multidimensional geography' was possible because her female subjects did not passively accept female identities, but tried to overcome them, and actively moved toward 'somewhere else', constantly, violently, and earnestly. The subject of Park Seo-won who tried to reach the end of suffering by further excommunicating Patos showed an excess of poetry, not a poetry of temperance. As a result, a new 'non - exclusionary female subject' could be created in Korea in the 1990s.

저전력 주차 안내 시스템 설계

주차안내 시스템은 주차장에서 주차정보를 제공하여 운전자에게 주차 편리성을 제공한다. 동시에 다수의 센서, 디스플레이와 제어모듈을 이용하여 아주 소량의 전기 에너지 만을 소모한다. 녹색 빌딩 설계의 요구가 점차 증가함에 따라 주차관리 시스템의 운용 전력 감축 문제가 이수화 되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 주차 관리 시스템의 감지기와 디스플레이 장치의 설계와 소비전력 감축의 결과를 제시한다. 이 시스템은 무선 Park Tile 과 Park Disk를 사용하여 전력소비를 감축 시키고, 여러 개의 주차공간 감지기와 자동차 카운터, 정보 디스플레이 장치, 안내 터미널과 제어장치로 구성되어 있다. 그리고 시스템 구조설계와 통신망 설계, 주차정보 서비스 시나리오 설계, .배터리 수명 제어, 운영 전력 평가 등이 수행되었다. 주차장당 운영전력은 0.4W로 평가 되었으며, 이는 기존 시스템의 17%정도 이고 매년 유지비는 기존 시스템에 비해 43%에 해당된다. The parking guidance system can increase driver’s convenience with detailed parking information service in the parking lot. At the same time, parking guidance system consumes non-negligible electrical energy with large amount of sensors, displays and control modules. With the increase in the demand for green and sustainable building design all over the world, it becomes a meaningful issue for parking guidance system to reduce operating power. This paper presents the preliminary design and estimated results of a parking guidance system which is optimized to reduce the power consumption mainly on detectors and displays. The system design is based on pre-developed wireless parking detectors, Park Tile and Park Disk. The system has a number of parking space detectors, vehicle count detectors, information displays, guidance terminals and other control units. We have performed system architecture design, communication network design, parking information service scenario planning, battery life regulation and at last operating power estimation. The estimated operating power was 0.4 watt per parking-slot, which is 17% of traditional systems. The estimated annual maintain cost was 43% of traditional systems.

DJ-1/park7 modulates vasorelaxation and blood pressure via epigenetic modification of endothelial nitric oxide synthase

<P><B>Aims</B></P><P>DJ-1/park7, a multifunctional protein, may play essential roles in the vascular system. However, the function of DJ-1/park7 in vascular contractility has remained unclear. The present study was designed to investigate whether the DJ-1/park7 is involved in the regulation of vascular contractility and systolic blood pressure (SBP).</P><P><B>Methods and results</B></P><P>Norepinephrine (NE) elevated contraction in endothelium-intact vessels in a dose-dependent manner, to a greater extent in DJ-1/park7 knockout (DJ-1/park7<SUP>−/−</SUP>) mice than in wild-type (DJ-1/park7<SUP>+/+</SUP>) mice. Acetylcholine inhibited NE-evoked contraction in endothelium-intact vessels, and this was markedly impaired in DJ-1/park7<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice compared with DJ-1/park7<SUP>+/+</SUP>. Nitric oxide (NO) production (82.1 ± 2.8% of control) and endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) expression (61.7 ± 8.9%) were lower, but H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> production (126.4 ± 8.6%) was higher, in endothelial cells from DJ-1/park7<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice than in those from DJ-1/park7<SUP>+/+</SUP> controls; these effects were reversed by DJ-1/park7-overexpressing endothelial cells from DJ-1/park7<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice. Histone deacetylase (HDAC)-1 recruitment and H3 histone acetylation at the eNOS promoter were elevated and diminished, respectively, in DJ-1/park7<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice compared with DJ-1/park7<SUP>+/+</SUP> controls. Moreover, SBP was significantly elevated in DJ-1/park7<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice compared with DJ-1/park7<SUP>+/+</SUP> controls, but this elevation was inhibited in mice treated with valproic acid, an inhibitor of Class I HDACs including HDAC-1.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>These results demonstrate that DJ-1/park7 protein may be implicated in the regulation of vascular contractility and blood pressure, probably by the impairment of NO production through H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>-mediated epigenetic inhibition of eNOS expression.</P>
