Background Androgens and androgen receptor (AR) are critical regulators of the masculinization process in male sexual development. The absence of a functioning AR results in the development of the androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS), a rare disorder of sexual development (DSD) characterized by the external genitalia feminization, gynecomastia, and impaired spermatogenesis. Objective To determine the AR gene mutations associated with male DSD in four unrelated Vietnamese patients. Methods To detect the disease-causing mutations, whole exome sequencing (WES) was performed on four patients diagnosed with AIS. Sanger sequencing was then used for validation of the identified mutations. Finally, 12 web-based tools, three-dimensional protein modeling software, and the guidelines issued by the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics were used to assess the potential pathogenicity of these mutations. Results Four distinct novel mutations, namely c.1834T > A (p.Cys612Ser), c.2122 C > G (p.Leu708Val), c.2630T > G (p.Phe877Cys), and c.2641 C > A (p.Leu881Met) in the AR gene, were identified in four AIS patients using WES. The in silico analysis results revealed that the Cys612, Leu708, Phe877, and Leu881 sites are important for an appropriate response to androgens of the AR, and mutation at these sites can have adverse effects on the AR functions, androgen–AR interaction, and AR signaling pathway. Conclusions WES and in silico analyses strongly suggested that four novel AR mutations are pathogenic and have led to the development of AIS in the four Vietnamese patients under consideration.

While the efficient usage of biomass waste can significantly help in addressing environmental issues,there are only a few reports that discuss about processing such waste effectively at a low-cost. Such challengearises from the strong association between the components biomass. In this study, an abundantagricultural byproduct, rice husk (RH), was used as the starting resource. A simple biorefining processof alkaline peroxide treatment followed by acid precipitation and ethanol extraction was performed onRH to obtain cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and silica. The chemical structures, morphologies, andphysic-chemical properties of the separated components were identified through a wide range of characterizationapproaches. The final products obtained from of this process were (i) bundles of fiber-likecellulose with a fiber width of 6 mm and (ii) small particles of hemicellulose and lignin with nonuniformshapes. The lignocelluloses products had over 90 wt% carbon with 52.28% crystalline ratio. Meanwhile, the other products comprising hemicelluloses, lignin, and silica were amorphous. The outcomeof this study contributes to expanding and developing the simple and efficient conversion processof biomass waste into sustainable value-added materials. It is crucial to reduce the environmental impactby using renewable materials as the new building block resources for synthetic chemicals.

Myogenesis and adipogenesis are the important processes determining the muscle growth and fat accumulation livestock, which ultimately affecting their meat quality. Hanwoo is a popular breed and its meat has been exported to other countries. The objective of this study was to compare the myogenesis and adipogenesis properties in satellite cells, and meat quality between Hanwoo and Vietnamese yellow cattle (VYC). Same 28-months old Hanwoo (body weight: 728±45 kg) and VYC (body weight: 285±36 kg) steers (n=10 per breed) were used. Immediately after slaughter, tissue samples were collected from longissimus lumborum (LL) muscles for satellite cells isolation and assays. After 24 h post-mortem, LL muscles from left carcass sides were collected for meat quality analysis. Under the same in vitro culture condition, the proliferation rate was higher in Hanwoo compared to VYC (p<0.05). Fusion index was almost 3 times greater in Hanwoo (42.17%), compared with VYC (14.93%; p<0.05). The expressions of myogenesis (myogenic factor 5, myogenic differentiation 1, myogenin, and myogenic factor 6)- and adipogenesis (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma)-regulating genes, and triglyceride content were higher in Hanwoo, compared with VYC (p<0.05). Hanwoo beef had a higher intramuscular fat and total monounsaturated fatty acids contents than VYC beef (p<0.05). Whilst, VYC meat had a higher CIE a* and total polyunsaturated fatty acids content (p<0.05). Overall, there was a significant difference in the in vitro culture characteristics and genes expression of satellite cells, and meat quality between the Hanwoo and VYC.

Electric-Field-Tunable Growth of Organic Semiconductor Crystals on Graphene

<P>Growth of organic semiconductor thin films on a two-dimensional template is affected by its properties and is not well understood. This growth process dictates a thin film’s final morphology and crystal structure and is controlled by the interactions between ad-molecules and the template. Here, we report that the template’s charge density determines the tuning of such interactions. We observe the dependence of pentacene nucleation on charge carrier density <I>n</I><SUB>g</SUB> in graphene under an applied electric field and contact-doping and then deduce that the interaction energy <I>E</I><SUB>A</SUB> between the ad-molecule and the graphene is related linearly to <I>n</I><SUB>g</SUB>. This tunability of <I>E</I><SUB>A</SUB> allows control of the pentacene crystals growth. We exploit these findings to demonstrate that graphene, in which <I>n</I><SUB>g</SUB> is controlled, can be used to template pentacene thin films for improved optoelectronic properties, such as electrical conductivity and exciton diffusion length.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors(PPARs) are ligand-activated transcription factors thatregulate the expression of multiple genes involved inmetabolic, anti-inflammatory, and developmental processes. This study evaluated the PPARs transactivationaleffects of thirteen cembranoid diterpenoids 1–13 from thesoft coral Lobophytum crassum, using PPAR-responsiveelements–luciferase reporter and GAL4–PPAR chimeraassays. All isolated compounds activated the transcriptionof PPARs in a dose-dependent manner, with EC50 valuesranging from 2.07 ± 1.73 to 130.20 ± 1.85 lM. Moreover,compounds 6–9 affected the transactivation of allthree PPAR types, PPARa, c, b(d), in a dose-dependentmanner, with EC50 values in a ranging from 11.92 ± 1.23to 122.50 ± 2.12 lM. These results provide a scientificrationale for further studies on the soft coral L. crassum andits diterpenoid constituents to develop medicinal productsagainst inflammatory and metabolic diseases.

<P>A two-dimensional epitaxial growth template for organic semiconductors was developed using a new method for transferring clean graphene sheets onto a substrate with controlled surface wettability. The introduction of a sacrificial graphene layer between a patterned polymeric supporting layer and a monolayer graphene sheet enabled the crack-free and residue-free transfer of free-standing monolayer graphene onto arbitrary substrates. The clean graphene template clearly induced the quasi-epitaxial growth of crystalline organic semiconductors with lying-down molecular orientation while maintaining the “wetting transparency”, which allowed the transmission of the interaction between organic molecules and the underlying substrate. Consequently, the growth mode and corresponding morphology of the organic semiconductors on graphene templates exhibited distinctive dependence on the substrate hydrophobicity with clear transition from lateral to vertical growth mode on hydrophilic substrates, which originated from the high surface energy of the exposed crystallographic planes of the organic semiconductors on graphene. The optical properties of the pentacene layer, especially the diffusion of the exciton, also showed a strong dependency on the corresponding morphological evolution. Furthermore, the effect of pentacene–substrate interaction was systematically investigated by gradually increasing the number of graphene layers. These results suggested that the combination of a clean graphene surface and a suitable underlying substrate could serve as an atomically thin growth template to engineer the interaction between organic molecules and aromatic graphene network, thereby paving the way for effectively and conveniently tuning the semiconductor layer morphologies in devices prepared using graphene.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/nalefd/2015/nalefd.2015.15.issue-4/nl504958e/production/images/medium/nl-2014-04958e_0008.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nl504958e'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
