      • Environmental Factors Related to Non-compliant Health Behavior in the Urban-Dwelling Elderly

        Aim(s): The purpose of this study is to explore non-compliant health behavior among the urban-dwelling elderly and identify related environmental factors. Method(s): This study analyzed the integrated data from the 2017 Korean National Survey on the Elderly and the 2017 Annual Report of Air Quality in Korea (N = 3,198). In this study, health behavior includes seven recommendations for promoting health. Social and physical environmental factors were selected based on Bronfenbrenner’s ecosystem theory, including air quality as an environmental factor. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the data, while controlling for general characteristics of the elderly. Result(s): The average score for non-compliant health behavior was 3.05 ± 1.03 among seven health behaviors. Hierarchical multiple regression showed that the environmental factors related to non-compliant health behavior were social activity participation (β = .15, p ≤ .001); interactions with friends, neighbors, and acquaintances (β = .06, p = .002); access to institutions and facilities (β = .06, p = .001); and particulate matter concentration (β = -.10, p ≤ .001). Conclusion(s): Our study findings emphasized that social activity participation, interactions with significant others, access to institutions and facilities, and particulate matter concentration should be considered when developing ecological interventions to improve health behaviors among the urban-dwelling elderly.

        Sustained dysfunctional information processing in patients with Internet gaming disorder : 6-month follow-up ERP study

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Internet gaming disorder (IGD), defined as an inability to control Internet-based game play, leads to serious impairment in psychological and social functioning, but few studies have identified the neurophysiological characteristics of patients with IGD. The aim of this study was to determine neurophysiological markers of P300 components associated with changes in symptoms after outpatient management with pharmacotherapy in patients with IGD. The present prospective longitudinal study included 18 patients with IGD and 29 healthy controls. The patients with IGD completed a 6-month outpatient management program including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor-based pharmacotherapy. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were acquired during the auditory oddball task. ERPs of the patients with IGD were recorded before and after treatment. Between-group differences and the pre-to-post treatment differences in P300 components were investigated using repeated-measures analysis of variance. The primary treatment outcome was a change in score on Young Internet Addiction Test between before and after treatment. At baseline assessments, the IGD group showed significantly reduced P300 amplitudes and delayed latencies at the midline centro-parietal site compared with those in the healthy controls. No significant changes in the P300 indices were observed between pre and post-treatment in the patients with IGD after 6 months of treatment, even though the patients with IGD exhibited significant improvements in their IGD symptoms. Furthermore, no significant difference in ERPs was observed between responders and nonresponders to a 6-month treatment in patients with IGD. These results suggest that reduced P300 amplitudes and delayed latencies are candidate endophenotypes in the pathophysiology of IGD.</P>

        Differences in Brain Morphology between Hydrocephalus Ex Vacuo and Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus

        Objective The distinction between idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) and hydrocephalus ex vacuo caused by encephalic volume loss remains to be established. This study aims to investigate radiological parameters as clinically useful tools to discriminate iNPH from hydrocephalus ex vacuo caused by Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Methods A total of 54 patients with ventriculomegaly (iNPH, 25; hydrocephalus ex vacuo, 29) were recruited in this study. Consequently, nine radiological parameters were compared between iNPH and hydrocephalus ex vacuo using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Results A small callosal angle (CA), the Sylvian fissure dilatation, and absence of narrowing of superior parietal sulci discriminated the iNPH group from the hydrocephalus ex vacuo group (p<0.05). The final binary logistic regression model included narrowing of superior parietal sulci, degrees of the CA, and height of the Sylvian fissure after controlling for age and global Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR). The composite score made from these three indicators (narrowing of superior parietal sulci, degrees of the CA, and height of the Sylvian fissure) was statistically different between iNPH and hydrocephalus ex vacuo. Conclusion The narrowing of the CA, dilatation of the Sylvain fissure, and narrowing of superior parietal sulci may be used as radiological key indices and noninvasive tools for the differential diagnosis of iNPH from hydrocephalus ex vacuo.

        Self-Injurious Behavior Rate in the Short-Term Period of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Korea

        Background: The objective of this study was to investigate the trend of self-injurious behavior (SIB) among persons who were directly impacted by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), especially those with pre-existing mental disorders. Methods: Using the National Health Insurance Service-COVID-19 database cohort, the monthly SIB rate was calculated by COVID-19 subgroups (i.e., positive for COVID-19 test, negative for COVID-19 test, and non-COVID-19 test [control]). In addition, moderated regression analysis was utilized to examine the statistical difference of SIB (suicide attempt and non-suicidal self-injury using ICD-10 code) trend between COVID-19 subgroups and with and without pre-existing mental disorder. Results: A total of 328,373 persons were included in the cohort study. Of these, 212,678 had been tested for COVID-19, and 7,713 of them were confirmed positive. During the pandemic peak, the “negative for COVID-19” group showed a large increase (P = 0.003) in SIB rates compared to the control group, the “positive for COVID-19” group showed a decreasing trend, but not significant (P = 0.314). Among those who were tested for COVID-19, those with pre-existing mental disorders showed an increasing trend of SIB compared to those without pre-existing mental disorders, however statistically insignificant (P = 0.137). Conclusion: Our results suggest that people who are tested for COVID-19 are at a high risk of SIB during the peak COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, screening for suicide risk and psychological interventions is needed for these high-risk groups.

        Particulate matter induces ferroptosis by accumulating iron and dysregulating the antioxidant system

        Particulate matter is an air pollutant composed of various components,and has adverse effects on the human body. Particulatematter is known to induce cell death by generating animbalance in the antioxidant system; however, the underlyingmechanism has not been elucidated. In the present study, wedemonstrated the cytotoxic effects of the size and compositionof particulate matter on small intestine cells. We found thatparticulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) with extraction ion (EI) components(PM2.5 EI), is more cytotoxic than PM containing only polycyclicaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Additionally, PM-inducedcell death is characteristic of ferroptosis, and includes ironaccumulation, lipid peroxidation, and reactive oxygen species(ROS) generation. Furthermore, ferroptosis inhibitor as liproxstatin-1and iron-chelator as deferiprone attenuated cell mortality, lipidperoxidation, iron accumulation, and ROS production after PM2.5EI treatment in human small intestinal cells. These results suggestthat PM2.5 EI may increase ferroptotic-cell death by ironaccumulation and ROS generation, and offer a potential therapeuticclue for inflammatory bowel diseases in human smallintestinal cells.

        Dysregulation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway via Rnf146 upregulation in a VPA-induced mouse model of autism spectrum disorder

        Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with impaired social behavior and communication, repetitive behaviors, and restricted interests. In addition to genetic factors, environmental factors such as prenatal drug exposure contribute to the development of ASD. However, how those prenatal factors induce behavioral deficits in the adult stage is not clear. To elucidate ASD pathogenesis at the molecular level, we performed a high-resolution mass spectrometry-based quantitative proteomic analysis on the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of mice exposed to valproic acid (VPA) in utero, a widely used animal model of ASD. Differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in VPA-exposed mice showed significant overlap with ASD risk genes, including differentially expressed genes from the postmortem cortex of ASD patients. Functional annotations of the DEPs revealed significant enrichment in the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, which is dysregulated by the upregulation of Rnf146 in VPA-exposed mice. Consistently, overexpressing Rnf146 in the PFC impaired social behaviors and altered the Wnt signaling pathway in adult mice. Furthermore, Rnf146-overexpressing PFC neurons showed increased excitatory synaptic transmission, which may underlie impaired social behavior. These results demonstrate that Rnf146 is critical for social behavior and that dysregulation of Rnf146 underlies social deficits in VPA-exposed mice.

        The β-Lactamase Activity at the Community Level Confers β-Lactam Resistance to Bloom-Forming Microcystis aeruginosa Cells

        Many freshwater cyanobacteria, including Microcystis aeruginosa, lack several known antibiotic resistance genes; however, both axenic and xenic M. aeruginosa strains exhibited high antibiotic resistance against many antibiotics under our tested concentrations, including colistin, trimethoprim, and kanamycin. Interestingly, axenic PCC7806, although not the xenic NIBR18 and NIBR452 strains, displayed susceptibility to ampicillin and amoxicillin, indicating that the associated bacteria in the phycosphere could confer such antibiotic resistance to xenic strains. Fluorescence and scanning electron microscopic observations revealed their tight association, leading to possible community-level β-lactamase activity. Combinatory treatment of ampicillin with a β-lactamase inhibitor, sulbactam, abolished the ampicillin resistance in the xenic stains. The nitrocefin-based assay confirmed the presence of significant community-level β-lactamase activity. Our tested low ampicillin concentration and high β-lactamase activity could potentially balance the competitive advantage of these dominant species and provide opportunities for the less competitive species, thereby resulting in higher bacterial diversity under ampicillin treatment conditions. Non-PCR-based metagenome data from xenic NIBR18 cultures revealed the dominance of blaOXArelated antibiotic resistance genes followed by other class A β-lactamase genes (AST-1 and FAR-1). Alleviation of ampicillin toxicity could be observed only in axenic PCC7806, which had been cocultured with β-lactamase from other freshwater bacteria. Our study suggested M. aeruginosa develops resistance to old-class β-lactam antibiotics through altruism, where associated bacteria protect axenic M. aeruginosa cells.

        Building on Pine and Gilmore's experience economy concepts and recent related travel research, this study newly investigated the relationships among the experience of film festival visitors, their satisfaction, and their behavioral intention. In particular, the study focused on how an escapist experience and traveler satisfaction mediated the effects of the other experiential dimensions on behavioral intention. The data supported the proposed theoretical relationships among the constructs and the applicability of the experience economy scales to festival management. The results also validate a mediating role of the escapist experience between the tourist's perceptions of festival performance and behavioral intention toward future film festival participation.
