        서울지역 노인 급식 프로그램 수혜자의 만족도 및 요구도 분석

        In the process of devising an efficient meal service system for the elderly, 478 elderly were interviewed at 6 different social centers with the elderly meal service program in Seoul area to monitor degree of satisfaction and/or needs of the beneficiaries regarding the program. The survey was conducted during the month of December 2002 by well-trained interviewers using self-developed questionnaire. Results were analyzed statistically using SAS package program. Most of the beneficiaries were low economic class and 76% of them had doctor diagnosed disease(s). Mean satisfaction score of the beneficiaries of congregate meal service was 3.72 out of 5. For most of the questions, female elderly and healthy elderly responded with higher score than male elderly and unhealthy elderly, respectively(p<0.05, p<0.01). On the other hand, beneficiaries of the home-delivered meal service were little bit less satisfied with the service(3.54 out of 5). Compared to the beneficiaries of congregate meal service, larger portion of beneficiaries of home-delivered meal service wanted more meats(28.5% vs. 17.1%) and vegetables(23.2% vs. 12.3%) as side dishes. On the other hand, the most preferred type of cooking and/or seasoning was stewing for both cases. Based on these findings, it is suggested that more fresh foods should be used than processed foods in the preparation of meals for the elderly and, more fish-, meat- and vegetable- dishes should be served to come up to the needs of the elderly. Onto this, mainly Korean style meals with some intermittent Western, Japanese or Chinese style meals served at the right temperature would suffice most of the elderly needs.

        Newly recorded unarmored dinoflagellates in the family Kareniaceae(Gymnodiniales, Dinophyceae) in brackish and coastal waters of Korea

        Unarmored dinoflagellates, in the family Kareniaceae, include harmful or toxic bloom-forming species, which are associated with massive fish kills and mortalities of marine organisms worldwide. The occurrence and distribution of the toxigenic species in the family Kareniaceae were investigated in the brackish and coastal waters of Korea between July 2018 and October 2020. During the survey, we collected seven newly recorded species; Karenia papilionacea, Karlodinium digitatum, Karl. veneficum, Karl. zhouanum, Takayama acrotrocha, T. helix, and T. tasmanica. A total of fifteen strains of the seven taxa were successfully established as clonal cultures and examined using LM, SEM, and molecular phylogeny inferred from LSU rDNA sequences. Herein, we present the taxonomic information, morphological features, and molecular phylogenetic positions of the unrecorded dinoflagellate species collected from Korean coastal waters.

      • Aggregation-induced emission of diarylamino-π-carborane triads: effects of charge transfer and π-conjugation

        <P>Carborane-based donor-pi-acceptor triads (D-pi-A-pi-D) bearing triarylamine moieties were synthesised. All the monomeric triads showed a blue-green emission in a dilute solution, which was assigned as an intramolecular charge-transfer (CT) emission. The intramolecular CT emission showed large Stokes shifts at a higher solvent polarity. The intramolecular CT emission further shifted to a longer wavelength with the increase in pi-conjugation. Interestingly, a strong red emission was observed in highly concentrated solutions or in the solid state, which was assigned as an aggregation-induced emission (AIE). Moreover, the AIE strongly depended on solvent polarity. A large Stokes shift in AIE was attributed to the strong CT character. The changes in the dipole moment for the AIE state and monomer emission were evaluated using the Lippert-Mataga relationship. The density functional theory calculations showed that the change in electron distribution between the aryl amino group (highest occupied molecular orbital, HOMO) and the carborane moiety (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, LUMO) indicates the intramolecular CT character, and the emission colour changes were attributed to the HOMO-LUMO energy gap controlled by the pi-extension of the phenylene linker. The electrochemical properties such as oxidation and reduction potentials were consistent with theoretical calculation results. The emission properties were affected by two main factors: solvent polarity and solubility.</P>

        Impact of biochar and compost amendment on corn yield and greenhouse gas emissions under waterlogged conditions

        Biochar, widely recognized for its capacity to counteract climate change impacts, has demonstrated substantial benefits in agricultural ecosystems. Nevertheless, empirical studies exploring its efficacy during climatic aberrations such as heavy rainfall are limited. This study investigated the effects of compost and biochar addition on corn growth attributes, yield, and soil CO2 and N2O fluxes under heavy rain (exceeding 5-yr average) and waterlogging conditions. Here, treatments included compost (CP, 7.6 t ha−1); rice husk biochar (RB, 7.6 t ha−1); wood biochar (WB, 7.6 t ha−1); and control (Cn). Under high rainfall and waterlogging, the CP treatment manifested a pronounced enhancement in corn biomass and productivity, exceeding biomass and productivity of Cn treatment by 12.6 and 32.2%, RB treatment by 120 and 195%, and WB treatment by 86.1 and 111%, respectively. Corn yield increased in the order: CP > Cn > WB > RB. Intriguingly, negligible disparity occurred between the RB and WB treatments in straw yield, grain yield, grain index, and corn productivity but both treatments recorded distinctively lower values than CP treatment. Also, the CO2 and N2O fluxes remained largely similar for two biochar treatments but lower than CP treatment. Overall, CP increased corn yield, straw, and grain yield whereas biochars reduced N2O flux during waterlogging. Although derived from a short-term experimental window, these pivotal findings furnish invaluable insights for devising soil amendments for yield and environmental benefits in contexts of extreme climatic perturbations. Our findings offer a robust foundation for refining nutrient management strategies confronted with waterlogging challenges, but long-term studies are necessary for definitive conclusions.

        Ligand-to-ligand charge transfer in heteroleptic Ir-complexes: comprehensive investigations of its fast dynamics and mechanism

        <P>To gain new insights into ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (LLCT) dynamics, we synthesised two heteroleptic Ir3+ complexes: (Ir(dfppy)(2)(tpphz)) and (Ir(dfppy)(2)(dpq)), where dfppy, tpphz, and dpq are 2-(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridine, tetrapyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c:3 '',2 ''-h: 2''',3'''-j]phenazine, and 2,3-bis-(2-pyridyl)-quinoxaline, respectively. The tpphz and dpq ligands have longer pi-conjugation than dfppy. Therefore, the excited ligand-centred (LC) state and the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) state of dfppy are higher than those of tpphz and dpq. The LLCT dynamics from dfppy to tpphz (or dpq) was probed using femtoscond transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy after the selective excitation of dfppy. The TA band for the LC/MLCT state of dfppy is observed at 480 nm. Because of the LLCT process, the TA bands related to the MLCT states of tpphz and dpq ligands increased, whereas those of dfppy decreased. The time constants for the LLCT process were 17 ps for Ir(dfppy)(2)(tpphz) and 5 ps for Ir(dfppy)(2)(dpq). The MLCT emission of Ir(dfppy)(2)(tpphz) showed strong temperature dependence, indicating that the LLCT process has a significant energy barrier. In comparison, the temperature weakly influenced the emission of Ir(dfppy)(2)(dpq), and thus, its LLCT process may have a smaller barrier. The anomalous rigidochromism and photodynamic behaviours can be explained in terms of the barrier between cyclometalating and ancillary ligands.</P>

        The influence of π-conjugation on competitive pathways: charge transfer or electron transfer in new D–π–A and D–π–Si–π–A dyads

        <P>In order to elucidate the influence of pi-conjugation on photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and intramolecular charge transfer processes, donor-pi-acceptor dyads (D-pi-A (1) and D-pi-Si-pi-A (2)) were newly synthesized. In these dyads, carbazole and triazine moieties acted as the electron donor and acceptor, respectively. The fluorescence of dyad 1 red-shifted as the solvent polarity was increased. The electron charge distribution of the excited state of dyad 1 was delocalized in the acceptor moiety, forming the charge transfer D delta+-pi-A(delta-) dyad in the excited state. In the excited state of dyad 1, the pi-conjugation acted as the linker for charge transfer between the donor and acceptor moieties. A large dipole moment change (Delta mu = 45.6 D) between the ground and excited states was determined using the Lippert-Mataga plot. Furthermore, the fluorescence of dyad 1 was observed upon two-photon excitation. In contrast, dyad 2, in which the pi-conjugation is disconnected by a Si-atom in the linker, displayed weak dual-emission: a short-wavelength emission at around 350 nm arising from the monomeric species and a long-wavelength one assigned to the emission from an intramolecular exciplex between the donor and acceptor moieties. The weak emission of dyad 2 indicates that the D+center dot-pi-Si-pi-A(-center dot) species was generated through a PET process in the excited state. The cationic radical species of the carbazole and the anionic radical species of the triazine, which show transient absorption (TA) bands at around 780 and 530 nm, respectively, were characterized using the femtosecond TA method.</P>

        Pneumothorax caused by delayed tracheal rupture in a pediatric patient with acute respiratory distress syndrome

        Tracheal rupture is a potentially lethal complication of endotracheal intubation [1-3] and usually occurs shortly after intubation [4]. Such rupture presents as a linear tear and is caused by movement of an over-inflated cuff or stylet [5]. Herein, we describe a case of pneumothorax caused by tracheal rupture after 30 days of intubation. A previously healthy 8-year-old boy was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit for severe acute respiratory distress syndrome. The patient was treated with mechanical ventilation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Cuff pressure was managed between 20 to 30 cm H 2 O, and the endotracheal tube was not changed before extubation. On hospital day 30, extubation was perfomred, and spontaneous breathing was noted. On the same day, massive pneumothorax was developed and was not controlled by chest tubes. Computed tomography showed a new lesion on the trachea (Figure 1), and bronchoscopy showed an oval ischemic lesion surrounded by a Cshaped tear (Figure 2). Since the position and size of the ischemic lesion were similar to those of the cuff, we suspected that prolonged cuff pressure created ischemia, and active breathing tore the weak margin. Managing cuff pressure in children requires high caution, and suspicion of tracheal rupture should be considered as a cause of pneumothorax.

        Biological Aspects of Aggression and Violence in Schizophrenia

        Although the majority of patients with schizophrenia are not actually violent, an increased tendency toward violent behaviors is known to be associated with schizophrenia. There are several factors to consider when identifying the subgroup of patients with schizophrenia who may commit violent or aggressive acts. Comorbidity with substance abuse is the most important clinical indicator of increased aggressive behaviors and crime rates in patients with schizophrenia. Genetic studies have proposed that polymorphisms in the promoter region of the serotonin transporter gene and in the catechol-O-methyltransferase gene are related to aggression. Neuroimaging studies have suggested that fronto-limbic dysfunction may be related to aggression or violence. By identifying specific risk factors, a more efficient treatment plan to prevent violent behavior in schizophrenia will be possible. Management of comorbid substance use disorder may help prevent violent events and overall aggression. Currently, clozapine may be the only effective antipsychotic medication to repress aggressive behavior. With the current medical field moving toward tailored medicine, it is important to identify vulnerable schizophrenia populations and provide efficient treatment.
