Two entomopathogenic bacteria, Xenorhabdus nematophila (Xn) and Photorhabdus temperata temperata (Ptt), maintain monoxenic condition within host insect cadaver by synthesizing and releasing various antibiotics. These two bacteria were cultured in tryptic soy broth during different times, which were screened in their antibacterial activities. Both bacterial culture broth had high antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli at their stationary growth phase. The potent culture broth was used to screen target plant bacterial pathogens using both inhibition zone assay and liquid culture assay. Ralstonia sp. was most susceptible, while Xanthomonas sp. was highly resistant. Pseudomonas sp. and Bacillus sp. showed hemi-susceptible. <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We present an overview on the electronic band structure of surface-doped black phosphorus. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data show that the <I>in situ</I> deposition of potassium atoms on the surface of single-crystalline black phosphorus modulates the band gap in the wide range of 0.0–0.6eV. At zero band gap, the surface layers of black phosphorus become a Dirac semimetal whose band dispersion is highly anisotropic, linear in armchair and quadratic in zigzag directions. In light of theoretical band calculations, we elucidate the mechanism of these band modifications as the giant Stark effect due to strong vertical electric fields induced by potassium atoms.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We provide an experimental study on the band structure of surface-doped black phosphorus. </LI> <LI> The band gap of black phosphorus is widely modulated by the giant Stark effect. </LI> <LI> Black phosphorus with zero bandgap has linear-quadratic band dispersions. </LI> </UL> </P>

Extra ventricular neurocytoma (EVN) is a rare brain tumor with histologic features similar with a central neurocytoma, but located outside of the ventricular system. In this study, we present an unusual case of hypothalamic EVN in a 14-year-old patient. The patient underwent subtotal removal and had tumor relapse. The patient was then treated using intensity modulated radiation therapy, and the tumor remained stable for 24 months. This case report may be important in that this is the first pediatric case of EVN located in the hypothalamic region. EVN has similar radiologic features with pilocytic astrocytomas and therefore a hypothalamic EVN may be misdiagnosed as a hypothalamic glioma. Also, the pathologic-radiologic-clinical correlation of EVN located in the hypothalamic area may be different from that of EVNs originating from other usual sites.

In this study, in order to improve the thermal and electrical properties of epoxy/graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), surface modifications of GNPs are conducted using silane coupling agents. Three silane coupling agents, i.e. 2-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl)-ethyltrimethoxysilane (ETMOS), 3-glycidoxypropyltriethoxysilane (GPTS), and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS), were used. Among theses, GPTMS exhibits the best modification performance for fabricating GNP-incorporated epoxy composites. The effect of the silanization is evaluated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The electrical and thermal conductivities are characterized. The epoxy/silanized GNPs exhibits higher thermal and electrical properties than the epoxy/raw GNPs due to the improved dispersion state of the GNPs in the epoxy matrix. The TEM microphotographs and Turbiscan data demonstrate that the silane molecules grafted onto the GNP surface improve the GNP dispersion in the epoxy.

Pruritus (itching) is classically defined as an unpleasant cutaneous sensation that leads to scratching behavior. Although the scientific criteria of classification for pruritic diseases are not clear, it can be divided as acute or chronic by duration of symptoms. In this study, we investigated whether skin injury caused by chemical (contact hypersensitivity, CHS) or physical (skin-scratching stimulation, SSS) stimuli causes initial pruritus and analyzed gene expression profiles systemically to determine how changes in skin gene expression in the affected area are related to itching. In both CHS and SSS, we ranked the Gene Ontology Biological Process terms that are generally associated with changes. The factors associated with upregulation were keratinization, inflammatory response and neutrophil chemotaxis. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway shows the difference of immune system, cell growth and death, signaling molecules and interactions, and signal transduction pathways. Il1a, Il1b and Il22 were upregulated in the CHS, and Tnf, Tnfrsf1b, Il1b, Il1r1 and Il6 were upregulated in the SSS. Trpc1 channel genes were observed in representative itching-related candidate genes. By comparing and analyzing RNA-sequencing data obtained from the skin tissue of each animal model in these characteristic stages, it is possible to find useful diagnostic markers for the treatment of itching, to diagnose itching causes and to apply customized treatment.

Background: To retrospectively investigate the use of angiography as a diagnostic tool and evaluate technical and clinical efficacy of transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) in Crohn’s disease-related gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. Methods: Institutional Review Board approval with waiver of patients’ informed consent requirement was obtained. There were 39 angiographies performed in 24 patients (male:female = 18:6, median age = 25 years) presenting with Crohn’s disease-related GI bleeding between 2001 and 2014. The technical and clinical success rate of TAE as well as procedure-related complications and 2-year mortality rate were evaluated. Clinical factors such as vital signs and laboratory findings as well as other modalities of investigations were analyzed.Results: Among 39 angiographies, 25.6% of angiographies were performed as the initial choice of investigation and angiography was performed after endoscopy failed to identify a bleeding site in 33.3%. There were negative angiographic findings in 66.7% (26/39). TAE (n = 13) demonstrated 100% technical success rate and 69.2% (9/13) clinical success rate with one case of ischemic complication and one case of mortality due to combined pneumonia. Ileal branches were the most frequent site of embolization and the combination of gelatin sponge slurry and microcoil was most com-monly used.Conclusion: Angiography and TAE may be the initial or follow-up management option in patients with Crohn’s disease presenting with acute GI bleeding. Although the rate of negative angiographic findings was high (66.7%), TAE showed high technical success rate and acceptable clinical suc-cess rate in patients with positive angiographic findings.
Catherine’s Enlightenment in Northanger Abbey as an English Woman with Subjecthood

This paper focuses on reading the world of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey as a microcosm of England in the 18th century, and aims to trace how Catherine Morland as a disinhibited subject comes to be enlightened upon realizing that her behavior and mode of judgement that viewed the world blindly in terms of the dichotomy of good and evil pertaining to the imaginary world of the gothic was irrelevant, that “among the English... there was a general though unequal mixture of good and bad”(147). And in the process of coming to be enlightened as such, what Catherine also unwittingly carries out is to serve as the catalyst for Henry Tilney’s personal transformation. I argue that Henry’s change of heart testifies to the change that Catherine as a sincere subject with agency has evoked in the private sphere, the intimate sphere of the Tilney household- or Northanger Abbey that stands in the place of the British empire as the beacon of luxury and improvement. From the perspective that views Catherine not merely as an individual but as an English woman with subjecthood, her revelation is not only that of a personal nature but a social one, an observation of Austen’s that exposes both the ignorance of the previously unreformed Catherine and the vanity of the cosmopolitan General Tilney. Constant throughout the novel is Austen’s brand of irony and satire, rendering which side she takes in the equation ambiguous. Evaluating various characters situated at different points in the spectrum of English national identity and modern improvement, Austen’s work of parody and satire reaches the conclusion that each representation has its limits and vices.

<P>In this paper, a high efficiency dc–dc buck converter with two-step digital pulse width modulation (DPWM) and low power self-tracking zero current detector (ST-ZCD) is proposed for Internet of Things (IoT) and ultralow power applications. The hybrid DPWM core with high linearity and low power consumption is proposed to implement the high efficiency DPWM dc–dc converter. It is composed of a two-step delay control using the counter and delay line. An adaptive window analog to digital converter is proposed to reduce the output voltage ripple within 20 mV. A dead time generator is implemented with the proposed ST-ZCD to minimize the reverse current. The ST-ZCD can improve efficiency by reducing the control loss that accounts for a large proportion of the dc–dc converter. Also, all digital type-III compensator is implemented for the low power and small die area. This chip is fabricated with a 55 nm CMOS process, which uses the standard supply voltage of 1.5–3 V to generate the output voltage of 1.2 V. The total active area is 500 μm × 300 μm. The measured peak efficiency of the DPWM dc–dc buck converter is 91.5% with a quiescent current consuming only 130 μA.</P>
