        Accuracy of swimming wearable watches for estimating energy expenditure

        With the recent installation of waterproof function on wearable watches, various sports activities including walking, running and even swimming are monitored. Commercially available swimming wearable watches automatically identified stroke type, swim distance, stroke counts and energy expenditure (EE). Although the accuracy of estimating EE of walking, bilking and activities of daily life on activity monitors have been evaluated, it has not been examined for swimming. Thus, the purpose of the study was to evaluate the accuracy of estimating EE for swimming wearable watches (Apple Watch S2, Apple and Garmin Finex 3HR, Garmin). A total of 78 swimmers aged 20-59 years (female: 48%) participated in the study. All the participants wore Apple and Garmin and completed a set of swimming protocol comprising various speeds (0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2 m/s). At each swimming speed they were asked to swim for four minutes. Lap counts, stroke counts and energy expenditure (EE) from the Apple and Garmin were evaluated with the criterion measures. Lap counts and stroke counts were directly counted by the research assistant. The portable respiratory gas analyzer (K4b2, Cosmed, Italy) and a swimming snorkel (Aqua Trainer Snorkel, Cosmed, Italy) was used as the criterion measure of EE. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of lap counting and stroke counts at various swimming speed were within 10% for Apple (lap counts: 0.5-6.1%, stroke counts: 6.2-9.3%) and about 20% for Garmin (lap counts: 0-20.6%, stroke counts: 6.8-17.6%). However, the MAPE of EE was higher for Apple (17.1%-151.7%) than for Garmin (17.9%-32.7%). The accuracy of estimating EE tended to improve with increasing swimming speed for both Apple and Garmin. The EEs from Apple were outside the equivalence zone except for at 1.2 m/s and were overestimated compared to the criteria. On the other hand, EEs from Garmin were within the equivalence zone at all speeds except for 1.2 m/s. In conclusion, Apple and Garmin wearable watches accurately measure lap counts and stroke counts. However, the accuracy of estimating EE are poor at slow to medium swimming speed. Further improvement is needed to estimate energy expenditure of swimming at various speed.

      • Effects of electrolyzed alkaline reduced water on high-intensive exercise-induced oxidative stress and fatigue in healthy adults

        It is well known that high-intensity physical activity causes excessive oxidative stress which gives rather harmful effect on health. In recent years, the application of electrolyzed alkaline reduced water (ARW) on sport field is growing rapidly. ARW was found to be effective on inhibiting of oxidative stress generated in cells during high-intensity exercise. However, the effects of ARW on the oxidative stress induced by exhaustive exercise have not yet been elucidated clinically. Therefore, we conducted the preliminary experiment to evaluate the drinking efficacy of ARW (pH 9.5) on oxidative stress and fatigue induced by high-intensity exercise in healthy adults. The maximal graded exercise was performed through Bruce protocol using treadmill. Participants drank ARW (10 mL/kg body weight) after exercise. Oxidative stress markers such as reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide, glutathione peroxidase and malondialdehyde, as well as the fatigue markers such as lactate, lactate dehydrogenase were assayed. Our preliminary results showed that the level of oxidative stress markers were significantly decreased after ARW intake compared to the level of baseline. ARW also showed significant decrease in the level of fatigue markers. Overall, our results demonstrate that drinking ARW is effective in reducing oxidative stress and fatigue after exhaustive exercise. Therefore, ARW is expected to be useful as a healthy sports drink after an intensive physical activity.

        Design of Roll Rate Estimator using GPS Signal for Spinning Vehicle

        The present paper proposes a method that can estimate a roll rate of spinning vehicles utilizing GPS receivers. The proposed method analyzes a relation between received signal and correlation value and utilizes a phenomenon that received signal power that changes according to a signal incident direction affects a correlation value. That is, a roll-rate estimation method using zero crossing detection method for correlation value, which has sinusoidal periodicity according to rotations of vehicles, is proposed. A correlation value in real environments experiences a jitter so that the proposed method includes a pre-processing filter and detection threshold setting way is also considered to reduce the effect of received signal power. In order to verify the operation of the proposed method and analyze the performance, a signal generator and software-defined receiver (SDR) are designed. The signal generator generates intermediate frequency (IF) signal by taking the rotation of vehicles, antenna gain, and signal power into consideration, and a correlation value is acquired by taking the generated IF signals into consideration. Using the generated correlation value, the operation of the proposed roll rate estimation method is verified and the performance is analyzed.

        Dental imaging characterization of micropigs

        Recently the micropig has been developed as human disease model. The dental and orofacial region of micropig is similar to that of humans, so it has been used for testing implant materials and techniques. The purpose of this study is on dental image at each age using radiography and computed tomography. Total twenty-two male micropigs, two or three animals of each 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months old, were given radiographic examinations. After general anesthesia, extra- and intra-oral radiographic technique and computed tomographic scans were performed to assess the dental characterization of micropigs. The total deciduous dental formula comprised 28 teeth and was depicted as Di 3/3, Dc 1/1, Dp 3/3. The total permanent dental formula comprised 44 teeth and was depicted as I 3/3, C 1/1, P 4/4, M 3/3. Hypodontia of the first premolars was common in the micropig. The permanent teeth erupted from 3 to 24 month after birth. The sequence of eruption of the permanent teeth was M1, P1, I3, C, M2, I1 + P3 + P4, P2, I2, M3. Dental imaging enables visualization of the unerupted teeth and gives more information about the development of the teeth. The growth pattern of the teeth obtained through radiographic and computed tomographic examination provides basic data in the micropig as animal model for dental research.

        On Stationarity of TARMA(p,q) Process

        We consider the threshold autoregressive moving average(TARMA) process and find a sufficient condition for strict stationarity of the proces. Given region for stationarity of TARMA(p,q) model is the same as that of TAR(p) model given by Chan and Tong(1985), which shows that the moving average part of TARMA(p,q) process does not affect the stationarity of the process. We find also a sufficient condition for the existence of kth moments(k$\geq$1) of the process with respect to the stationary distribution.

        Water-Dispersible Ferrimagnetic Iron Oxide Nanocubes with Extremely High <i>r</i><sub>2</sub> Relaxivity for Highly Sensitive in Vivo MRI of Tumors

        <P>The theoretically predicted maximum <I>r</I><SUB>2</SUB> relaxivity of iron oxide nanoparticles was achieved by optimizing the overall size of ferrimagnetic iron oxide nanocubes. Uniform-sized iron oxide nanocubes with an edge length of 22 nm, encapsulated with PEG-phospholipids (WFION), exhibited high colloidal stability in aqueous media. In addition, WFIONs are biocompatible and did not affect cell viability at concentrations up to 0.75 mg Fe/ml.         유-초 연계를 위한 유아교사 역할 인식과 실행 간 차이 분석 : 유아교사의 전문성 수준별 비교

        본 연구에서는 유-초 연계를 위한 유아교사 역할에 대한 유아교사들의 인식과 실행 간 차이가 어떠한 양상을 보이는지 유아교사의 전문성 수준별로 비교 고찰하였다. 이를 위해 서울과 경기도에 소재한 유치원과 어린이집 만5세반 교사 213명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였으며 SPSS를 활용한 중요도-실행도 분석(IPA)을 주요 연구방법으로 사용하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 유-초 연계를 위한 유아교사 역할의 실행정도는 중요성에 대한 인식정도에 비해 전체적으로 유의하게 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 유아교사의 전문성 수준별로 역할의 인식과 실행을 비교한 결과 전문성 상·하 집단 간 유-초 연계를 위한 유아교사 역할의 인식과 실행 모든 영역에서 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 셋째, 유-초 연계를 위한 유아교사 역할에 대한 중요도-실행도 분석(IPA) 결과, 전문성 상·하 집단 모두 공통적으로 사회정서 지원 및 기본생활습관 지도는 인식도와 실행도가 모두 높아 현행 수준을 유지해도 좋으나, 학습능력 향상 및 교수계획은 인식도와 실행도가 모두 낮아 이들 역할에 대한 인식개선이 시급한 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 부모와의 협력은 전문성 상·하 집단 간 상이한 양상을 보였으며 전문성 하 집단의 경우 인식도와 실행도 모두 취약한 것으로 나타났다. 이상의 연구결과를 토대로 유초연계를 위한 유아교사 교육프로그램의 개선방향에 대해 제안하였다. This study intends to examine the aspect of the difference of the perception and the practice of roles of early childhood teacher for the continuity between nursery and primary education compared by the degree of professionalism of early childhood teacher. A survey was conducted for the study aimed at 213 teachers for a class for five-year-olds working for kindergartens and day care centers located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, using the Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) on which the SPSS is applied as the main research method. The results are as follows: First, the practice of roles of early childhood teacher for the continuity between nursery and primary education showed significantly lower degree in general comparing to the perception for the importance; second, as a result of the comparison by the degree of professionalism of early childhood teacher, there was a significant difference displayed in both the recognition and the practice of roles of early childhood teacher for the continuity between nursery and primary education between the high professionalism group and the low professionalism group; and third, as a result of the Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) on the roles of early childhood teacher for the continuity between nursery and primary education, the both groups showed high degree of perception and practice in socioemotional support and basic life habit guidance, which indicates that the existing standard may be maintained, whereas their perception for their roles should be urgently improved as low figures was showed in learning ability improvement and teaching plan. Meanwhile, the both groups showed a different aspect in support with parents, and the low professionalism group in particular suggested that it is weak in both the degree of perception and practice. Based on the outcomes above, this study suggests the direction of improvement of the educational program for early childhood teacher for the continuity between nursery and primary education.
