The reaction of 2, 6-dichoroquinoxaline with m-chloroperbenzoic acid gave 2, 6-dichloroquinoxaline 4-oxide, whose reaction with sodium azide provided 7-chlorotetrazolo[1, 5-a]quinoxaline 5-oxide and not the isomeric azide. The structures of the synthesized compounds were confirmed on the basis of IR, ¹H-NMR, elemental analysis and mass spectral data.

This study aimed at examining the foodservice satisfaction on dormitory restaurant by gender, age, college. The subjects of the study were 236 students living in the dormitory of Daejeon University. The survey was conducted between June 4 to June 12, 2002. The data was collected by survey and- was analyzed by SPSS package. The evaluation of the foodservice satisfaction by gender, showed that answers of the most students were below average. Generally, male students were more satisfied than females. The evaluation of the foodservice satisfaction by age, showed that younger students were more disatisfied than older students. The results suggest that food preference of subjects should be considered in meal planning and various cooking method should be utilized to enhance taste of foods for better foodservice. The management of the foodservice will be made efforts to improve the quality of foodservice on the basis of these results.

<P>Soy-isoflavones may act as estrogenic agonists or antagonists depending on the endogenous hormone status. These clinical effects can be exerted variably in individuals by the metabolic ability to produce a more potent metabolite than precursors. The objective of this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was to investigate the skeletal effect of isoflavones according to their metabolic variability in premenopausal women. Volunteers were randomly assigned to receive either soy-extract isoflavones (n=32) or lactose (n=21) once a day for three menstrual cycles. After intervention, the urinary excretions of isoflavones and their metabolites were significantly higher in the soy group than in the placebo group and showed a large inter-individual variation. Women in the soy group were divided into subgroups according to their ability to excrete more potent metabolites. Serum osteocalcin and urine deoxypyridinoline showed a tendency to increase after a challenge in equol high-excretors. Serum osteocalcin concentration in the genistein high-excretors increased significantly after a challenge (<I>P</I>=0.04) but did not increase in either the placebo or genistein low-excretors. An estrogenic antagonistic effect of isoflavones on bone turnover was observed in premenopausal women who are able to produce more potent metabolites.</P>

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between parents´ marital adjustment and their children´s emotional anxiety. The sample of this study was 151 middle SES 5thand6th graders. The instruments were Russel´s Marital Adjustment Scale translated by Chung, Moon Ja (1985), and Sarason et al. ´s General Anxiety Scale for Children translated by Yon, Kyoung Hee(1978). The data were analyzed with ttest and correlation. The results of this study showed no relationship between parents´ marital adjustment and children´s emotional anxiety. There was also no difference between children with hight emotional anxiety and those with low emotional anxiety in terms of parents´ marital adjustment; and there was no significant relationship between any of the subfactors of parents´marital adjustment and children´s emotional anxiety.

<P>The rhizome of<I> Atractylodes macrocephala</I> Koidz (AM) is a constituent of various Qi booster compound prescriptions. We evaluated inflammatory responses in macrophages and T cells isolated from mice following oral administration of AM water extract (AME). Peritoneal exudate cells were isolated from thioglycollate-injected mice and alterations in scavenger receptors were examined. Peritoneal macrophages were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Serum cytokine responses to intraperitoneal LPS injection were also evaluated. Splenocytes were isolated and their composition and functional responses were measured. The content of atractylenolide I and atractylenolide III, known anti-inflammatory ingredients, in AME was 0.0338 mg/g extract and 0.565 mg/g extract, respectively. AME increased the number of SRA(+)CD11b(+) cells in response to thioglycollate. Peritoneal macrophages isolated from the AME group showed no changes in inflammatory markers such as tumor necrosis factor- (TNF-) <I>α</I>, interleukin- (IL-) 6, inducible nitric oxide synthase, and cyclooxygenase-2 but exhibited a decrease in CD86 expression. Interestingly, AME decreased the serum levels of TNF-<I>α</I> and IL-6 upon intraperitoneal injection of LPS. Regarding the adaptive immune system, AME increased the CD4(+) T cell population and major histocompatibility complex class II molecule expression in the spleen, and cultured splenocytes from the AME group showed increased production of IL-4 concurrent with decreased interferon-<I>γ</I> production during T cell activation. AME promoted the replenishment of peritoneal macrophages during the inflammatory response but its anti-inflammatory activity did not appear to be mediated by the modulation of macrophage activity. AME also altered the immune status of CD4 T cells, promoting the Th2 response.</P>
