Safety and efficacy of salvage conventional re-irradiation following stereotactic radiosurgery for spine metastases

        Marcus A. Florez(Marcus A. Florez ),Brian De(Brian De ),Bhavana V. Chapman(Bhavana V. Chapman ),Anussara Prayongrat(Anussara Prayongrat ),Jonathan G. Thomas(Jonathan G. Thomas ),Thomas H. Beckham(Thom 대한방사선종양학회 2023 Radiation Oncology Journal Vol.41 No.1

Purpose: There has been limited work assessing the use of re-irradiation (re-RT) for local failure following stereotactic spinal radiosurgery (SSRS). We reviewed our institutional experience of conventionally-fractionated external beam radiation (cEBRT) for salvage therapy following SSRS local failure. Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective review of 54 patients that underwent salvage conventional re-RT at previously SSRS-treated sites. Local control following re-RT was defined as the absence of progression at the treated site as determined by magnetic resonance imaging. Results: Competing risk analysis for local failure was performed using a Fine-Gray model. The median follow-up time was 25 months and median overall survival (OS) was 16 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 10.8–24.9 months) following cEBRT re-RT. Multivariable Cox proportional-hazards analysis revealed Karnofsky performance score prior to re-RT (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.95; 95% CI, 0.93– 0.98; p = 0.003) and time to local failure (HR = 0.97; 95% CI, 0.94–1.00; p = 0.04) were associated with longer OS, while male sex (HR = 3.92; 95% CI, 1.64–9.33; p = 0.002) was associated with shorter OS. Local control at 12 months was 81% (95% CI, 69.3–94.0). Competing risk multivariable regression revealed radioresistant tumors (subhazard ratio [subHR] = 0.36; 95% CI, 0.15–0.90; p = 0.028) and epidural disease (subHR = 0.31; 95% CI, 0.12–0.78; p =0.013) were associated with increased risk of local failure. At 12 months, 91% of patients maintained ambulatory function. Conclusion: Our data suggest that cEBRT following SSRS local failure can be used safely and effectively. Further investigation is needed into optimal patient selection for cEBRT in the retreatment setting.

      • MOOCs from the Viewpoint of an Instructional Designer and Eight Ways to Improve Them

Vol.2014 No.2

Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have garnered worldwide attention. The MOOC experiment has now moved from an exploration in open course delivery to a distance education movement. Institutions of higher education are embracing MOOCs as the platform of the future and as a way to create brand extension and broader education access. From the viewpoint of instructional design, the typical MOOC lacks proven instructional design elements. In addition, standard MOOCs violate many principles of instruction. This paper will address the brisk rise in popularity of MOOCs. Instructional challenges of MOOCs will be explored through the lens of instructional design. The paper will conclude by making recommendations for ways to improve MOOCs.

Mobilization Functions of the Bacteriocinogenic Plasmid pRJ6 of Staphylococcus aureus

Marcus Lívio Varella Coelho,Hilana Ceotto,Danielle Jannuzzi Madureira,Ingolf F. Nes,Maria do Carmo de Freire Bastos 2009 The journal of microbiology Vol.47 No.3

Plasmid pRJ6 is the first known bacteriocinogenic mobilizable (Mob) plasmid of Staphylococcus aureus. Its Mob region is composed of four mob genes (mobCDAB) arranged as an operon, a genetic organization uncommon among S. aureus Mob plasmids. oriTpRJ6 was detected in a region of 431 bp, positioned immediately upstream of mobC. This region, when cloned into pCN37, was able to confer mobilization to the recombinant plasmid only in the presence of pRJ6. The entire Mob region, including oriTpRJ6, is much more similar to Mob regions from several coagulase-negative staphylococci plasmids, although some remarkable similarities with S. aureus Mob plasmids can also be noted. These similarities include the presence within oriTpRJ6 of the three mcb (MobC binding sites), firstly described in pC221 and pC223, an identical nick site also found in these same plasmids, and a nearly identical srapC223 site (sequence recognized by MobA). pRJ6 was successfully transferred to S. epidermidis by conjugation in the presence of the conjugative plasmid pGO1. Altogether these findings suggest that pRJ6 might have been originally a coagulase-negative staphylococci plasmid that had been transferred successfully to S. aureus.

A Computer Vision System for Pallets Verification in Quality Control

Marcus Vinicius Barbosa de Morais,Sara Dereste dos Santos,Ricardo Pires 한국정밀공학회 2023 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.24 No.7

Flexible manufacturing systems have gained their place in industries thanks to the possibility of being adapted to a particular task. A robotized palletizing cell is an example of such a system, which is responsible for organizing and stacking loads to be transported. A key part in this process is the pallet and if it presents a problem, the whole cell may stop. Furthermore, it is possible that manipulator robots, transported loads, and any other part of the cell suffer damage. To avoid these problems, the objective of this work is to develop an artificial vision system capable of selecting wood pallets that are in good condition, which means free of defects such as splinters, cracks and broken or out of dimensions elements. The artificial vision system has been developed based on image processing and machine learning techniques and presented better results compared to the past studies. Image processing parameters of Canny and Hough Transform have been adjusted, followed by comparisons among Support-Vector Machines with different kernels and their parameters. An accuracy of 100% in the classification has been obtained based on the Support-Vector Machine with radial basis function kernel.

Energy Consumption Model for Additive-Subtractive Manufacturing Processes with Case Study

        Marcus A. Jackson,Arik Van Asten,Justin D. Morrow,Sangkee Min,Frank E. Pfefferkorn 2018 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.5 No.4

There has been a growing trend in industry towards the development of integrated manufacturing centers that combine several manufacturing processes, such as the mill-turn center. As additive manufacturing becomes a more widely adopted technology, combining additive with subtractive manufacturing in one machine is a logical evolution to provide the benefits of final parts made from raw materials with the dimensional tolerance and surface finish expected in many applications. An energy consumption model was created that accounted for the energy consumption during primary metal production, deposition, and machining phases of wire-based and powder-based additive-subtractive manufacturing processes. This model was applied to a case study where the energy consumption to produce sub-sized, sheet type, and plate type (size) tensile bars was calculated. It was found that the wire-based process consumed less energy during deposition, whereas powder-based was less energy consumptive during primary metal production and machining. The findings suggest that given the present understanding of the respective technologies’ capabilities, the desired final net shape will dictate the preferred manufacturing process with respect to energy consumption considerations.

Approach for a smart device for active vibration suppression as an add-on for robot-based systems

Marcus Perner,Christian Krombholz,Hans Peter Monner 대한기계학회 2014 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.28 No.11

Robot-based systems are defined by the capabilities of links and joints that form the robot arm, the control including drive engines andthe endeffector. In particular, articulated robots have a serial structure. They have to carry the drive engine of each ongoing axis, whichresults in higher susceptibility to vibration. To compensate weak precision the German Aerospace Center (DLR) integrates a qualityimproving sensor system on the robot platform. A vibration monitoring system detects vibrations that affect the precision during motiontasks. Currently, higher precision is achieved by slowing down the speed in production. Therefore, a compromise is given between speedand precision. To push the limits for these two conflicting process properties, we propose an approach for an additional smart device todecouple the process-sensitive unit from disturbances arising through motion of the kinematic structure. The smart device enables activevibration suppression by use of a piezo-based actuator with a lever mechanism connected to a motion platform. The lever mechanismprovides the required force and displacement adaption. The platform provides mounting and steering of the process-sensitive components. First, an insight into the automation task is given within this paper. Secondly, the system design is illustrated. Based on simulation resultsthe characteristic of the proposed mechanism is shown. Besides the mechanical properties like stiffness and lever amplification, dynamicalissues like the smallest eigenfrequency are discussed. To verify simulation results initial measurements are presented and discussed. The paper sums up with the discussion of an implementation of a closed-loop control system to achieve vibration-free and fast motion.

        Jugendarbeit in Österreich

Vol.0 No.18
