Survey of HER2-neu Expression in Colonic Adenocarcinoma in the West of Iran

Background: Overexpression of HER2-neu has been reported in many epithelial malignancies, including cancers of the breast, ovaries, lungs, prostate, bladder, pancreas, colorectum and stomach as well as osteosarcomas. The aim of this study was evaluation of expression of HER2-neu immunohistochemistry (IHC) status and clinicopathologic features in a series of colonic adenocarcinomas. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive and analytical study, we surveyed 211 samples of colon adenocarcinoma from 182 patients (86.3%) undergoing total or partial colectomy and 29 (7.13%) with biopsies by colonoscopy. A sufficient sample size was obtained from all cases and the slides were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and also by IHC (HER2) staining. Results: The mean age for the patients at diagnosis was 57.9 years (range, 15-88 years). One hundred and twenty one patients (57.3%) were male. Of all patients, 201 samples (95.3%) were conventional adenocarcinomas (159, 29 and 13 cases were well, moderately and poorly differentiated, respectively) and 10 (4.7%) were mucinous type. Out of 211 cases, 171 were checked for lymph nodes metastasis and 64 were positive. There is a correlation between HER2 scores and differentiation, most score 3 cases being well differentiated (P<0.05). Conclusions: In patients with advanced colon cancer, surgery alone is not curative and other forms of therapy may be required to prolong patient survival. HER2 overexpression was found in some cases and this could be a guideline to new adjuvant therapy for these patients.
Morphological Evaluation of Three Native Species of Amygdalus in Iran

Iran, with over 30 native species, is within the center origin for almonds. Shoot and root growth, and kernel characteristics were evaluated for seedlings of three endemic species, Amygdalus scoparia (syn. Prunus scoparia), A. eleagnifolia (syn. P. eleagnifolia), and A. eburnea (syn. P. eburnea). Significant differences among species were observed for most of the traits measured. Seedlings of A. scoparia were larger than A. eleagnifolia and A. eburnea, while A. eburnea had greater stem biomass, greater specific leaf weight, smaller leaf area, and lower stomatal density than the other species. A. scoparia had the most extensive root system and A. eburnea had the smallest. Shoot characteristics, such as leaf length, were often significantly correlated with root traits, though the association varied with species. Distinguishing morphological features included seedling diameter, branch angle, leaf length, root number, and total root length for A. scoparia; seedling height, root number, root diameter, leaf width, and stomatal length for A. eleagnifolia; and number of first order lateral stem, internode length, leaf area, and root length and diameter for A. eburnea. Detailed knowledge of species morphology and development patterns allows a more efficient evaluation of rootstock potential of these drought tolerant species.
Biharmonic Maps on Doubly Warped Product Manifolds

Methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer was grafted onto Low density Polyethylene by the direct method of radiation grafting. The effect of cohesive energy density of different organic solvents on the degree of grafting was investigated. It was found that the extent of grafting depends largely on the kind of solvent,in which the highest degree of grafting was achieved in the presence of dioxane, whereas the lowest degree of grafting occurred in the presence of methanol. This behaviour was attributed to the solubility parameters of the solvent, monomer and polymer. The change in structure of the LDPE graft copolymer films was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV/vis absorption and thermogravimetric analysis. The X-ray diffraction results showed a decrease in the crystallinity of LDPE graft copolymer matrix at high degree of grafting. Studies were made on the UV-absorption edge,indirect allowed transitions with their optical energy gaps are determined. At the same time the Urbach energy was evaluated. The activation energy of the thermal decomposition was calculated according to Horowitz and Metzger method.

Vibration analysis of embedded functionally graded (FG)-carbon nanotubes (CNT)-reinforced piezoelectric cylindrical shell subjected to uniform and non-uniform temperature distributions are presented. The structure is subjected to an applied voltage in thickness direction which operates in control of vibration behavior of system. The CNT reinforcement is either uniformly distributed or functionally graded (FG) along the thickness direction indicated with FGV, FGO and FGX. Effective properties of nano-composite structure are estimated through Mixture low. The surrounding elastic foundation is simulated with spring and shear constants. The material properties of shell and elastic medium constants are assumed temperature-dependent. The motion equations are derived using Hamilton's principle applying first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). Based on differential cubature (DC) method, the frequency of nano-composite structure is obtained for different boundary conditions. A detailed parametric study is conducted to elucidate the influences of external applied voltage, elastic medium type, temperature distribution type, boundary conditions, volume percent and distribution type of CNT are shown on the frequency of system. In addition, the mode shapes of shell for the first and second modes are presented for different boundary conditions. Numerical results indicate that applying negative voltage yields to higher frequency. In addition, FGX distribution of CNT is better than other considered cases.

The nasal septum is a crucial supporting factor for the nasal cavity and may develop several anatomical variants including septal deviation, spur and pneumatization. These variants could be associated with a higher incidence of sinusitis due to structural and functional alterations. So, the aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of nasal septal deviation (NSD), nasal septal spur (NSS) and nasal septal pneumatization (NSP) among the Saudi adult population and their links with the incidence of sinusitis by using computed tomography (CT). A retrospective study was achieved over a twenty-two months period on 681 adult Saudi subjects (420 males and 261 females) aged 20 years or older, referred for coronal CT evaluation of the paranasal sinuses. NSD and NSS were significantly more prevalent in males than females (80.0% vs. 67.4% respectively for NSD, and 34.5% vs. 24.9% respectively for NSS), while there was no statistical difference in frequency of NSP regarding gender (P=0.670). The incidence of sinusitis was significantly higher in presence of NSD and/or NSS (P<0.001 for both). On the contrary, NSP was not associated with a significant increase in the prevalence of sinusitis (P=0.131). In conclusion, NSD and NSS are more prevalent in males than females among the Saudi population with no statistical difference between both genders regarding the presence of septal pneumatization. Furthermore, sinusitis is more prevalent with the occurrence of NSD and NSS, and not related to the incidence of NSP.

Cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) powders with nanocrystalline sizes were produced by a combination of sol-gel auto-combustion and ultrasonic irradiation methods employing a mixture of urea, thiourea and glycine as the fuel with the corresponding metal nitrates. The pH in the starting solution affects the combustion process, and then determines the particle size of the assynthesized powder. The influence of the pH value on the gel auto-combustion and the phase composition of the synthesized powders have been studied with the help of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations, Fourier transform infra red (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The synthesized powders had a particle size distribution in the range of 23-43 nm.
