        Evaluation of forty-fi ve cultivars as aff ected by bulb initiation, bulb and scale characteristics, and bulb minerals and organic compounds of intermediate-day yellow onion ( Allium cepa L.) in South Korea

        We evaluated and classifi ed forty fi ve onion cultivars according to bulb initiation, bulb and scale characteristics, mineralsand organic compounds contents, and storage quality in South Korea during 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 growing seasons. Field experiment was conducted in randomized block design with three replications. Bulb initiation ranged from 153 daysafter transplanting (DAT, April 2) to 177 DAT (April 26). Fresh bulb weight (FBW) and bulb index (BI) were 285.5 ± 18.5 g/individual, 0.93 ± 0.05, respectively. Number of scales (NS), number of center (NC), and scale thickness (ST) were 7.6 ± 0.2,2.3 ± 0.2, and 5.5 ± 0.2 mm/scale, respectively. Chroma and Lightness of bulb skin were 27.1 ± 1.9, 61.2 ± 2.3, respectively. Storage loss (SL) on December 12 was 19.4 ± 5.9%. Nitrogen (N), Carbon (C) and sulfur (S) contents were 1.36 ± 0.14,37.9 ± 3.2 and 0.40 ± 0.06 mg kg −1 on a fresh weight basis. Total soluble solids (TSS) and total phenolics content (TPC) were8.6 ± 0.6 °Bx, 164.8 ± 15.6 mg GE kg −1 on a fresh weight basis. Days from transplanting to bulb initiation was signifi cantlypositively correlated with bulb height, NC, dry matter, N, C, S, TSS, TPC, total fl avonoids content (TFC) etc., while it wasnegatively correlated with rot loss and SL. Dry matter content was signifi cantly positively correlated with N, C, S, TSS,TPC, TFC etc., while it was negatively correlated with SL. Storage loss was negatively correlated with N, S, Potassium andTSS. Dendrogram of agglomerative hierarchical clustering for the forty fi ve cultivars based on bulb initiation, bulb and scalecharacteristics, and bulb minerals and organic compounds contents classifi ed fi ve cultivar groups. Cluster 1 featured the earliestbulb initiation and the greatest SL. Cluster 2 featured the fewest NS and NR, and the thickest ST. Cluster 3 featured thegreatest FBW, and the most NS and NC. Cluster 4 featured the greatest BI and the thinnest ST. Cluster 5 featured the lowestSL, and the highest minerals and antioxidant compounds contents. This information should be helpful for onion growers todecide onion cultivar and for onion breeders to promote new cultivars depending on their purpose.

        3-Dimensional Analysis of the Steam-Hydrogen Behavior from a Small Break Loss of Coolant Accident in the APR1400 Containment

        In order to analyze the hydrogen distribution during a severe accident in the APR1400 containment, GASFLOW II was used. For the APR1400 NPP, a hydrogen mitigation system is considered from the design stage, but a fully time-dependent, three-dimensional analysis has not been performed yet. In this study GASFLOW code II is used for the three-dimensional analysis. The first step to analysis involving hydrogen behavior in a full containment with the GASLOW code is to generate a realistic geometry model, which includes nodalization and modeling of the internal structures such as walls, ceilings and equipment. Geometry modeling of the APR1400 is conducted using GUI program by overlapping the containment cut drawings in a graphical file format on the mesh view. The total number of mesh cells generated is 49,476. And the calculated free volume of the APR1400 containment by GASFLOW is almost the same as the value from the GOTHIC modeling. A hypothetical SB-LOCA scenario beyond design base accident was selected to analyze the hydrogen behavior with the hydrogen mitigation system. The source of hydrogen and steam for the GASFLOW II analysis is obtained from a MAAP calculation. Combustion pressure and temperature load possibilities within the compartments used in the GOTHIC analysis are studied based on the Sigma-Lambda criteria. Finally the effectiveness of HMS installed in the APR1400 containment is evaluated from the point of severe accident management

      • Effect of renal function on the pharmacokinetics of fimasartan: a single-dose, open-label, Phase I study

        <P><B>Background</B></P><P>Fimasartan is a novel angiotensin II receptor blocker. Fimasartan is mainly eliminated via biliary excretion, and its urinary elimination is less than 3%.</P><P><B>Objective</B></P><P>Based on guidance from the United States Food and Drug Administration, a reduced pharmacokinetic (PK) study was conducted to evaluate the effect of renal function on the PK of fimasartan in patients with renal impairment and healthy volunteers.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>A single centre, single-dose, open-label, healthy volunteer controlled trial was conducted in patients with renal impairment (RI) (estimated glomerular filtration rate lower than 30 mL/min/1.73 m<SUP>2</SUP>) and age-, weight- and sex-matched healthy volunteers (estimated glomerular filtration rate higher than 90 mL/min/1.73 m<SUP>2</SUP>). All participants received a single oral dose of fimasartan 120 mg, after which serial blood sampling for PK evaluation was conducted. Noncompartmental PK analysis of fimasartan was performed. A mixed-effects model approach was used to identify significant covariates and PK parameters.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Sixteen subjects were enrolled (8 healthy volunteers and 8 RI patients). The maximum plasma concentrations and areas under the plasma concentration curves of the RI patients were higher than those of the healthy volunteers, with geometric mean ratios of 1.87 and 1.73, respectively. The relative bioavailability of fimasartan from the population PK analysis was 77% higher in the RI patients than in the healthy volunteers.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>The increased drug exposure of fimasartan in RI patients was explained by the increased relative bioavailability. This result can be explained from our knowledge concerning alterations in PK related to renal function.</P>

        South Korea’s Historical Constructions of “Advanced Country”

        선진국 담론은 ‘선진국’과 ‘후진국’ 두 주요 개념을 중심으로 한 담론적 관계들을 바탕으로 역사적으로 형성된 지식체계다. 이 담론은 국가발전 과정에서 한국인들에게 국가 정체성과 세계관에 대한 지배적인 해석적 틀을 제공하며 발전주의적 국가변화를 정당화해왔다. 이 논문은 주요 신문들에 대한 담론 분석방법을 이용해, 중심개념인 ‘선진국’의 함의가 다른 역사적 환경에 따라 어떻게 바뀌었는지에 초점을 맞춰 1980년대부터 현재까지 선진국 담론의 변화과정을 역사사회학적 시각으로 고찰한다. 첫째 장에서는 1980년대 지구적 신자유주의 정권의 부상과 한국에 대한 시장개방 압력 등의 국제적 환경에서 ‘선진국’에 대한 인식이 상당히 조심스러웠음을 살펴본다. 둘째 장에서는 90년대 선진국 담론이 세계화 담론을 정당화하는 지식체계로서 기능하면서, ‘선진국’ 개념이 이상화하는 경향이 두드러졌음을 알아본다. 마지막 장에서는 2000년대 한국의 신자유주의적 사회변화와 관련해 선진국 담론이 보수적 신자유주의자들에 의해 이용되면서 ‘선진국’이 한층 더 이상화, 보편화했음을 분석한다. The discourse of seonjinguk is a historically constructed knowledge system based upon the relations constructed around the concepts of seonjinguk (advanced country) and hujinguk (backward country). It has provided South Koreans with dominant interpretive frameworks of national identities and worldviews in their national developmental processes. Through the discourse analysis of newspapers, this paper aims to examine the historical transformation of the discourse of seonjinguk from the 1980s to the present, focusing on the changes of the connotation of the central concept of seonjinguk in different historical circumstances. The first section examines that the attitudes towards seonjinguk were somewhat cautious in the 1980s amidst the rise of the global neoliberal regime and its pressure on Korea to open its market. The second section analyzes that the discourse of seonjinguk in the 1990s played a major knowledge system justifying the segyehwa (globalization) discourse and the idealization of seonjinguk became notable. And, the last section explores that the concept of seonjinguk became further idealized and universalized in the process of being appropriated by conservative neoliberals in regard to Korea’s neoliberal transformations in the 2000s.

      • Hierarchical Transmission Algorithm combined coding method in the T-DMB system

        T-DMB (Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) system, is based on the Eureka-147 standard, provides various multimedia data services. However TDMB needs more various services and higher throughput while maintaining reception. Therefore, this paper proposes advanced T-DMB system using the unequal error protection system, hierarchical multi level modulation and various coding scheme which is used for recent wireless communication, while maintaining backward compatibility. As the simulation results, proposed advanced T-DMB system has coding gain of 2~6㏈ compared to conventional T-DMB.

        Enhanced Linear Protection Switching Methods Supporting Dual Node Interconnection in Packet Transport Networks

        <P>In this paper, we discuss the issues of supporting protection switching in multiple recovery domains (MRDs). In MRDs, dual node interconnection (DNI) between two adjacent domains is essential to provide reliable services for customers whose traffic traverses multiple domains. Existing linear protection switching solutions in packet transport networks, such as multiprotocol label switching—transport profile (MPLS-TP) and Ethernet, support protection of an end-to-end flow between two end nodes in a recovery domain; however, they do not provide DNI capability between two recovery domains. We propose a DNI scheme with linear protection switching technology and analyze its advantages. In the case of a large number of connections affected by a single failure in MRDs protected by linear protection, traffic recovery can be delayed owing to the signaling associated with excessive simultaneous signal fail triggers. We design a collective interconnection message (CIM) scheme that improves the performance of linear protection DNI (LP-DNI) in MRDs and confirms that the CIM mechanism reduces restoration time significantly. By extensive simulations on link and node failures scenarios, we investigate different combinations of LP-DNI and existing ring protection processes to establish the influence of service resiliency in MRDs.</P>

        The Discursive Constructions of North Korea and the United States

        Drawing on the insights of discourse theorists and constructivists, this paper aims to examine the notable identities and representations of North Korea and the U.S. constructed on Fox News in the period of U.S. President Barack Obama’s first term. Through the analysis of Fox News opinion columns, this paper finds some notable conceptual clusters around which the negative identities of North Korea are constructed, such as “rogue,” “nuclear,” “despot,” “criminal,” “enemy,” “unpredictability,” “danger,” “problem,” and “importance.” In relation to North Korea, the U.S. tends to be identified and represented as the most indispensible, respectful, and generous country leading the world for democracy and freedom against growing global threats. The contrasting identities of North Korea and the U.S. on Fox News are a discursive ground on which tension and conflict are justified and instigated. Raising a need for relativism about the assumption of one’s moral superiority over the other, this paper argues for paying more attention to the ways of deconstructing antagonistic identities and representations between them.

      • Photobacterium atrarenae sp. nov. a Novel Bacterium Isolated from Sea Sand

        <P>The gram-reaction-negative, motile, facultatively anaerobic, catalase-positive, oxidase-positive bacterial strain M3-4(T) was isolated from black sea sand and subjected to a taxonomic study. Cells of strain M3-4(T) have monotrichous flagella, grow optimally at 37°C and at pH 7-8 in the presence of 1-4% (w/v) NaCl and hydrolyze casein, starch and L: -tyrosine. According to phylogenetic analyses using 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain M3-4(T) belongs to the genus Photobacterium and is most closely related to Photobacterium rosenbergii LMG 22223(T) (97.4%) and P. gaetbulicola KCTC 22804(T) (96.6%). The DNA-DNA relatedness value between M3-4(T) and P. rosenbergii LMG 22223(T) was 21.5%. The DNA G+C mol% of strain M3-4(T) was 53.6. The major cellular fatty acid of strain M3-4(T) was a summed feature 3 consisting of C(16:1) ??7c and/or iso-C(15:0) 2-OH (35.0%), followed by C(16:0) (25.4%) and C(18:1)??7c (16.8%). These data suggest that strain M3-4(T) represents a novel species in genus Photobacterium, for which the name P. atrarenae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M3-4(T) (= KCTC 23265(T)??=??NCAIM B 02414(T)).</P>
