        Intrathyroidal Parathyroid Hyperplasia Misdiagnosed as Hurthle Cell Neoplasm

        This case report details the medical history of a 60-year-old male with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis. The patient was referred for an assessment of thyroid nodules. Ultrasound revealed probably benign nodules of 2.6 cm and 1.4 cm in the right and left thyroid poles, respectively. The right thyroid nodule was confirmed as a Hurthle cell neoplasm through a core needle biopsy. Laboratory tests indicated elevated serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcium levels, suggesting secondary hyperparathyroidism. Subsequent evaluations, including a parathyroid scan and single photon emission computed tomography-computed tomography, identified probable parathyroid adenomas displaying increased radiotracer uptake. Moreover, delayed images revealed heightened uptake in two intrathyroidal nodules detected during recent ultrasonography. Intraoperative PTH measurements exhibited a significant 66.5% decline following the resection of the right thyroid. While frozen sections of the right thyroid indicated Hurthle cell proliferative lesions, the final histopathological examination unveiled nodular parathyroid hyperplasia. This case underscores the challenges in distinguishing between thyroid and parathyroid pathologies and underscores the importance of comprehensive assessments in managing such cases.

      • Review of the Long-term Evolution of a Biosphere for the Safety Assessment of a Deep Geological Repository

        The timescale for the post-closure safety assessment of a deep geological repository ranges from ten thousand to a million year. In such a long period of time, the biosphere inevitably undergoes changes. Therefore, the long-term evolution of a biosphere is recognized as an important issue in the post-closure safety assessment of a deep geological repository for spent fuels. In this study, we reviewed the approaches to address the long-term evolution of a biosphere. The major drivers of longterm evolution of a biosphere are the climate change and the resulting landscape development. They can affect the hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical characteristics of a biosphere, and then the radionuclide migration through the biosphere followed by the exposure doses for the critical groups. In addition, human activities and the social developments can affect the climate change resulting in the long-term evolution of a biosphere. To make a biosphere assessment, the long-term evolution scenarios for the biosphere should be formulated considering these climate change, landscape development, and human activities. In addition, features, events, and processes (FEPs) that affect the long-term evolution of a biosphere should be used. According to the Safety Case reports of Finland, the major long-term evolution scenario drivers of a biosphere are local sea-level change due to climate change and land use related to crop type, irrigation procedures, livestock, forest management, construction of a well, and demographics. The climate change causing the local sea-level change can be simulated using various earth system models such as CLIMBER-2, MPI/UW, and UVic and an icesheet model such as SICOPOLIS. The review results of this study and FEPs related to the climate change, the landscape development, and human activities will be used to formulate long-term evolution scenarios for the safety assessment of a deep geological repository for spent fuels.

        Evaluation of forty-fi ve cultivars as aff ected by bulb initiation, bulb and scale characteristics, and bulb minerals and organic compounds of intermediate-day yellow onion ( Allium cepa L.) in South Korea

        We evaluated and classifi ed forty fi ve onion cultivars according to bulb initiation, bulb and scale characteristics, mineralsand organic compounds contents, and storage quality in South Korea during 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 growing seasons. Field experiment was conducted in randomized block design with three replications. Bulb initiation ranged from 153 daysafter transplanting (DAT, April 2) to 177 DAT (April 26). Fresh bulb weight (FBW) and bulb index (BI) were 285.5 ± 18.5 g/individual, 0.93 ± 0.05, respectively. Number of scales (NS), number of center (NC), and scale thickness (ST) were 7.6 ± 0.2,2.3 ± 0.2, and 5.5 ± 0.2 mm/scale, respectively. Chroma and Lightness of bulb skin were 27.1 ± 1.9, 61.2 ± 2.3, respectively. Storage loss (SL) on December 12 was 19.4 ± 5.9%. Nitrogen (N), Carbon (C) and sulfur (S) contents were 1.36 ± 0.14,37.9 ± 3.2 and 0.40 ± 0.06 mg kg −1 on a fresh weight basis. Total soluble solids (TSS) and total phenolics content (TPC) were8.6 ± 0.6 °Bx, 164.8 ± 15.6 mg GE kg −1 on a fresh weight basis. Days from transplanting to bulb initiation was signifi cantlypositively correlated with bulb height, NC, dry matter, N, C, S, TSS, TPC, total fl avonoids content (TFC) etc., while it wasnegatively correlated with rot loss and SL. Dry matter content was signifi cantly positively correlated with N, C, S, TSS,TPC, TFC etc., while it was negatively correlated with SL. Storage loss was negatively correlated with N, S, Potassium andTSS. Dendrogram of agglomerative hierarchical clustering for the forty fi ve cultivars based on bulb initiation, bulb and scalecharacteristics, and bulb minerals and organic compounds contents classifi ed fi ve cultivar groups. Cluster 1 featured the earliestbulb initiation and the greatest SL. Cluster 2 featured the fewest NS and NR, and the thickest ST. Cluster 3 featured thegreatest FBW, and the most NS and NC. Cluster 4 featured the greatest BI and the thinnest ST. Cluster 5 featured the lowestSL, and the highest minerals and antioxidant compounds contents. This information should be helpful for onion growers todecide onion cultivar and for onion breeders to promote new cultivars depending on their purpose.

        The Discursive Constructions of North Korea and the United States

        Drawing on the insights of discourse theorists and constructivists, this paper aims to examine the notable identities and representations of North Korea and the U.S. constructed on Fox News in the period of U.S. President Barack Obama’s first term. Through the analysis of Fox News opinion columns, this paper finds some notable conceptual clusters around which the negative identities of North Korea are constructed, such as “rogue,” “nuclear,” “despot,” “criminal,” “enemy,” “unpredictability,” “danger,” “problem,” and “importance.” In relation to North Korea, the U.S. tends to be identified and represented as the most indispensible, respectful, and generous country leading the world for democracy and freedom against growing global threats. The contrasting identities of North Korea and the U.S. on Fox News are a discursive ground on which tension and conflict are justified and instigated. Raising a need for relativism about the assumption of one’s moral superiority over the other, this paper argues for paying more attention to the ways of deconstructing antagonistic identities and representations between them.

        Enhanced Linear Protection Switching Methods Supporting Dual Node Interconnection in Packet Transport Networks

        <P>In this paper, we discuss the issues of supporting protection switching in multiple recovery domains (MRDs). In MRDs, dual node interconnection (DNI) between two adjacent domains is essential to provide reliable services for customers whose traffic traverses multiple domains. Existing linear protection switching solutions in packet transport networks, such as multiprotocol label switching—transport profile (MPLS-TP) and Ethernet, support protection of an end-to-end flow between two end nodes in a recovery domain; however, they do not provide DNI capability between two recovery domains. We propose a DNI scheme with linear protection switching technology and analyze its advantages. In the case of a large number of connections affected by a single failure in MRDs protected by linear protection, traffic recovery can be delayed owing to the signaling associated with excessive simultaneous signal fail triggers. We design a collective interconnection message (CIM) scheme that improves the performance of linear protection DNI (LP-DNI) in MRDs and confirms that the CIM mechanism reduces restoration time significantly. By extensive simulations on link and node failures scenarios, we investigate different combinations of LP-DNI and existing ring protection processes to establish the influence of service resiliency in MRDs.</P>

        ON RIGHT-ANGLED ARTIN GROUPS WHOSE UNDERLYING GRAPHS HAVE TWO VERTICES WITH THE SAME LINK

        Let ${\Gamma}$ be a graph which contains two vertices $a$, $b$ with the same link. For the case where the link has less than 3 vertices, we prove that if the right-angled Artin group A(${\Gamma}$) contains a hyperbolic surface subgroup, then A(${\Gamma}$-{a}) contains a hyperbolic surface subgroup. Moreover, we also show that the same result holds with certain restrictions for the case where the link has more than or equal to 3 vertices.

        Effect of Compost and Mixed Oilseed Cake Application Rates on Soil Chemical Properties, Plant Growth, and Yield of Organic Bulb Onions

        This study was performed to determine the effect of the application rate of beef cattle manure compost (BCMC) and mixed oilseed cake (MOC) on soil nutrients, plant growth, and bulb yield of intermediate-day onions (Allium cepa L.) in two different locations over two consecutive growing seasons. Trials were conducted at two organic onion growers’ fields (one in Sangju county and one in Hamyang county) during the growing seasons of 2012/2013 and 2013/2014. Treatments included BCMC applied at a rate of 0 or 30 t·ha<SUP>-1</SUP> and MOC applied at rates of 0, 3, 6, and 9 t·ha<SUP>-1</SUP>. The average air temperature in 2013/2014 was higher than that in 2012/2013 at both sites. All soil nutrient contents in the experimental fields were higher at harvest in 2013/2014 than in 2012/2013 except for exchangeable calcium. Soil nutrients were higher at harvest in Sangju than in Hamyang except for available phosphorus. Soils incorporated with BCMC had higher electrical conductivity, nitrogen, average phosphorus, and exchangeable potassium contents compared with soil without compost. Onions grown in 2013/2014 at Hamyang with BCMC produced higher yields compared to those grown in 2012/2013 at Sangju without BCMC. However, differences in plant growth between the two experimental sites and among MOC application rates were not affected by soil nutrient content. Onions grown in 2013/2014 at Hamyang with BCMC produced higher yields compared to those in grown in 2012/2013 at Sangju without BCMC. Application of MOC increased bulb yield compared with no MOC; however, there was no significant difference among application rates. Therefore, we recommend applying BCMC at a rate of 30 t·ha<SUP>-1</SUP> every year and restricting MOC fertilizer applications to 3 t·ha<SUP>-1</SUP> based on soil nutrient status to produce optimum organic onion yields.
