        Theoretical Approach to Spin-current Absorption at an Interface

        We study the spin current induced by an inhomogeneous spin-orbit coupling due to impurities byusing the Keldysh Green’s function formalism. In particular, we focus on the diffusive contributionsand give their analytical expressions. A spin current is found to be generated in the presence ofboth a gradient in the spin-orbit strength and a gradient in the external electric field. The resultingdiffusive spin current indicates the presence of spin-current absorption at the interface between thematerials with different spin-orbit coupling strengths, which is exemplified with an experimentallyrelevantsetup.

      • Development of SVC Control for Suppressing Voltage Fluctuations

        This paper describes control methods for a line-commutated static var compensator (SVC) and a self-commutated SVC to suppress voltage fluctuations of electric arc furnaces (EAFs) for steel making. In these control methods, the line-commutated SVC and the self-commutated SVC compensate for the fluctuations of the reactive power effectively within their respective rated capacities. This paper also presents practical examples of both SVCs for suppressing voltage fluctuations. In the actual operation of EAFs and SVCs, the authors verified that each SVC effectively suppressed the voltage fluctuations at the point of common coupling.

        CHIME dating and age mapping of monazite in granulites and paragneisses from the Hwacheon area, Korea: implications for correlations with Chinese cratons

        The basement of the Hwacheon area in the northern part of the Gyeonggi massif in the Korean Peninsula comprises granulite and gneiss complexes that are separated by an extensive mylonite zone. Granulites distant from the mylonite zone show little evidence of a retrograde overprint beyond minor growth of biotite along garnet grain boundaries. Monazite grains enclosed in garnet show a core to rim decrease in Y, and those in the matrix show a peripheral enrichment of Y on low-Y interiors. Similarly, garnet grains decrease in Y from core to rim, with peripheral Y-enrichment, which can be attributed to early to peak garnet growth and post-growth modification, respectively. The three chemical domains representing stages of monazite growth show no detectable age difference, together yielding a CHIME age of 1868 ± 24 Ma. Granulites near the mylonite zone show growth of cordierite and biotite aggregates around garnet grains, and yield Permo-Triassic monazite domains on and within predominantly Paleo-proterozoic monazite grains. Mylonitized granulites have a metamorphic overprint characterized by the growth of the sillimanite and K-feldsper assemblage at ca. 241 Ma, subsequent to ductile shearing. Pelitic gneisses in the gneiss complex contain zircon grains with Neoproterozoic detrital cores and monazite grains with unequivocal metamorphic ages of ca. 245 Ma. Geological, petrological and chronological evidence suggests differing evolutional histories between two crustal domains prior to amalgamation. The widespread occurrence of Permo-Triassic paragneisses and mylonites in the Gyeonggi massif can be explained by detachment of the metamorphosed upper crust of the South China block, which was thrust over the Paleoproterozoic granulite complex at ca. 241 Ma during the Sulu orogeny. Permo-Triassic metamorphic overprints on the latter are attributed to contact metamorphism from the hot allochthon.

        Information, rebel organization and civil war escalation: The case of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam

        Current literature on civil war is well aware of the importance of defection by rebel members for civil war dynamics, including that of ethnic defection. However, scholars have not closely examined the effects of defection on civil war. In this article, I argue that rebel members’ defection and resultant information leaks to the state increase the likelihood of the state’s military escalation through their effects on three aspects of conflict: the efficiency of the state’s offensives against the rebel group; the efficiency of the state’s defenses against rebel group’s offensives; and the level of uncertainty for the state in war. These effects of defection, however, are conditional on the credibility and consequentiality of the information from the defectors. The utilities of the alternative courses of action for the state also matters. The theory is applied to the case of civil war in Sri Lanka to explain the state’s initiation of Eelam War IV, which ended with a swift and thorough state victory. An implication of the theory is that the experience in Sri Lanka is not easily replicable elsewhere. The findings have implications to the studies of the duration and termination of civil war as well as to the studies of the use of violence against civilians.

        Stephen Dedalus’s Villanelle Revisited — “The Mysterious Ways of Spiritual Life” between Yeats and Joyce

        예이츠와 조이스의 관계는 다층적이어서 그들의 작품과 전기를 비교하는 텍스트의 상호비교 해석이 요구된다. 조이스의 초상화 속의 스티분의 비라넬 시는 예이츠의 사랑의 시 「방랑하는 앵거스의 노래」에 대한 조이스의 숨겨진 반응 혹은 반어적 암시로 읽을 수 있다. 이 비교는 후자의 뮤즈 시로서의 감추어진 면모를 보이나, 보다 뜻있는 것은, 뮤즈-유혹자에 대한 각 내레이터의 태도에 있어 두드러진 차이를 보이는데, 즉, 그녀를 찾기 위한 열정적 방랑자와 그녀에게 애원하는 지친 연인이라는 차이점이다. 결과적으로, 본 필자가 제안하는 것은, 비라넬아의 후렴 “열열한 방법에 지치셨나요”를 예이츠가 정치적에 “열정적인” 모드 곤에게 애원하는 말로 볼 수 있다는 점이다. The relationship between Yeats and Joyce is multi-layered. It invites our intertextual explications by comparing their works as well as biographical ones. Stephen’s villanelle in Joyce’s A Portrait can be read as Joyce’s covert response or an ironical allusion to Yeats’s love poem “The Song of Wandering Aengus.” The comparison clarifies the latter’s latent aspect as a muse-poem but, more significantly, a striking difference between each narrator’s attitude to the muse-temptress: the passionate wanderer in pursuit of her vs. the weary lover with supplication to her. Consequently, I suggest that the refrain in the villanelle, “Are you not weary of ardent ways,” could be also read as if Yeats had uttered his repressed question to Maud Gonne who was politically “ardent.”

      • A Method for Determining Classroom Seating Arrangements by Using a Genetic Algorithm

        Classroom seating arrangements are important topics that affect each and every students and teachers. In this study we propose a method for determining the classroom seating arrangements considering relationships between students. In order to determine the optimal classroom seating arrangements, a genetic algorithm is applied on the basis of the questionnaire results and the analysis of the observation of behaviors between students. In the genetic algorithm, we propose a procedure named a matrix crossover. Our optimization problem is to determine the combination of classroom seating arrangements in such a way that the minimum of fitness rates of all students is as large as possible. Based on our proposed classroom seating arrangements, we carried out experiments at a national college of technology in Japan. It is found from the experiments that satisfaction of each student for our proposed method is higher than the traditional one. It is also found from another questionnaire that each student is actually comfortable in the classroom because of the relations between other students. It is confirmed from the experimental results that the proposed method was effective.

      • Experimental study of PID auto-tuning for unsymmetrical processes

        The advent of relay auto-tuning of PID controllers got rid of previous troublesome tuning procedure. However, PID control performance didn"t change so much since the tuning rule was the same as the Ziegler and Nicholsthat only use ultimate gain and ultimate period. In this paper, we propose new tuning rule especially for an unsymmetrical process. The experimental test result showed proposed rule achieved less overshoot and quicker disturbance recovery than conventional tuning rule.

        Estimation of Smoothing Constant of Minimum Variance and Its Application to Shipping Data with Trend Removal Method

        Focusing on the idea that the equation of exponential smoothing method (ESM) is equivalent to (1, 1) order ARMA model equation, new method of estimation of smoothing constant in exponential smoothing method is proposed before by us which satisfies minimum variance of forecasting error. Theoretical solution was derived in a simple way. Mere application of ESM does not make good forecasting accuracy for the time series which has non-linear trend and/or trend by month. A new method to cope with this issue is required. In this paper, combining the trend removal method with this method, we aim to improve forecasting accuracy. An approach to this method is executed in the following method. Trend removal by a linear function is applied to the original shipping data of consumer goods. The combination of linear and non-linear function is also introduced in trend removal. For the comparison, monthly trend is removed after that. Theoretical solution of smoothing constant of ESM is calculated for both of the monthly trend removing data and the non monthly trend removing data. Then forecasting is executed on these data. The new method shows that it is useful especially for the time series that has stable characteristics and has rather strong seasonal trend and also the case that has non-linear trend. The effectiveness of this method should be examined in various cases.
