      • 과학 영재를 위한 캠프 운영과 교육 프로그램의 개발 준거

        본 연구는 영재 프로그램과 그 운영의 적절성과 타당성을 판단하는데 기초 자료가 될 수 있는 준거를 추출하기 위한 연구이다. 과학캠프 활동 프로그램에 대한 학생들의 흥미와 유익성, 영재캠프 운영에 관련된 문항으로 구성된 설문지를 캠프에 참가한 학생과 그 학부모에게 실시하여 분석하였다. 영재 캠프에 참가한 학생은 직접 참여할 수 있으면서 지적 호기심을 자극하는 활동에 흥미를 느꼈고, 놀이 요소가 포함된 프로그램을 많이 선호하였다. 학생들이 모르거나, 중요하다고 생각하거나, 일상생활에 적용할 수 있는 과학 지식이나 원리를 배웠다고 인식하는 경우, 유익한 프로그램으로 인식하였다. 과학 영재 캠프의 운영에 있어서 많은 학생이 방학 중에 1주일 정도의 기간으로 합숙하는 프로그램 운영 방식을 선호하였다. 이러한 연구 결과를 토대로 본 연구에서는 캠프 활동 프로그램과 운영에 대한 몇 가지 시사점을 제안하였다. This study is to find out criteria and basic data to evaluate effectiveness and validity of program for gifted children in science. To this purpose, a questionnaire to investigate the perception of interest and usefulness for camp activities was administered to the gifted children registered to science camp. By analyzing their responses, we could conclude that the gifted children thought the activities, which stimulating their curiosity or providing opportunities to participate, to be interesting to them. They preferred the activities like a play or a game and considered that a useful activities should have something worth-learning. They and their parents preferred to stay in a camp for a week. Based on this research, we suggested some implications about academic camp program for gifted children in science.

        Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi Ameliorates LPS-mediated Inflammation by Suppressing MAPKs Signaling

        벼 농사에서 마릅으로 불리는 올방개는 문제의 잡초 종류 중 하나로서 제초 작용의 대상이다. 하지만, 올방개는 임상적으로 황달, 해열 및 통경을 위한 전통 의학에 쓰여왔다. 올방개는 오랫동안 임상적으로 사용되어왔음에도 불구하고, 분자생물학 기반의 생물학적 효과는 아직 밝혀지지 않았다. 때문에, 본 연구진은 LPS로 유도된 대식세포 내에서 올방개 추출물 처리에 의한 NO 생산량을 스크리닝 함으로써 항염증 효과를 조사했다. 가장 효과적인 항염증 fraction을 찾기 위해, 본 연구진은 HP20 column chromatography를 이용하여 5 종류의 EtOH sub-fraction을 동정하였다; 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 및 100% EtOH. 동정한 sub-fraction 중에서, 60%와 80% 성분에서 가장 유의성 있는 NO 생산의 저해를 나타냈으며, 세포독성 효과도 나타내지 않는 결과를 나타냈다. 추가적으로 80% sub-fraction은 유의성 있는 iNOS 저해와 전염증성 매개체의 mRNA; IL-6, TNF-α, 그리고 IL-1β를 저해하였으며, 이 결과는 MAPKs 세포신호전달과 관련 있는 JNK 및 ERK 단백질의 인산화 저해가 원인임을 밝혔다. 본 연구진의 결과는 올방개 추출물 80% sub-fraction EtOH가 항염증 활성을 가장 효과적으로 저해하는 성분 임을 밝혔으며, 이는 MAPKs 세포신호전달의 과 발현에 의한 염증성 질병의 치료제 후보 성분 일 수 있음을 시사한다. In rice agriculture, Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi (olbanggae) is a target for herbicidal intervention as a problem weed although it has also long been used clinically as a traditional medicine for jaundice, fever, and blood flow. E. kuroguwai has been evaluated in many clinical trials, but its molecular biological advantages are still unknown. Here, we investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of E. kuroguwai 80% ethanol extracts by screening NO production in LPS-induced macrophage activation. To find the most effective fractions, we partitioned five sub-fractions using HP20 column chromatography, namely 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%. Of these, the 60% and 80% sub-fractions were found to significantly inhibit NO production; there were no toxicological effects at any concentration. In addition, the 80% sub-fraction inhibited significantly the iNOS and the mRNA of the pro-inflammatory mediators IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β by inhibiting the phosphorylation of JNK and ERK pathways associated with MAPKs signaling. Our results suggest that the 80% E. kuroguwai sub-fraction has the most significant anti-inflammatory effects of inhibiting iNOS and pro-inflammatory mediators and suppressing the phosphorylation of JNK and ERK. Therefore, the 80% sub-fraction of E. kuroguwai extract may be a therapeutic candidate for inflammatory diseases associated with the overexpression of MAPKs.

        Lipoteichoic acids as a major virulence factor causing inflammatory responses via Toll-like receptor 2

        Lipoteichoic acid (LTA), a major cell wallcomponent of Gram-positive bacteria, is associated withvarious inflammatory diseases ranging from minor skindiseases to severe sepsis. It is known that LTA is recog-nized by Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2), leading to the initi-ation of innate immune responses and further developmentof adaptive immunity. However, excessive immuneresponses may result in the inflammatory sequelae that areinvolved in severe diseases such as sepsis. Althoughnumerous studies have tried to identify the molecular basisfor the pathophysiology of Gram-positive bacterial infec-tion, the exact role of LTA during the infection has notbeen clearly elucidated. This review provides an overviewof LTA structure and host recognition by TLR2 that leadsto the activation of innate immune responses. Emphasis isplaced on differential immunostimulating activities ofLTAs of various Gram-positive bacteria at the molecularlevel.

      • <i>Staphylococcus aureus</i> lipoproteins augment inflammatory responses in poly I:C-primed macrophages

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Secondary bacterial infection contributes to severe inflammation following viral infection. Among foodborne pathogenic bacteria, <I>Staphylococcus aureus</I> is known to exacerbate severe inflammatory responses after infection with single-stranded RNA viruses such as influenza viruses. However, it has not been determined if <I>S. aureus</I> infection enhances inflammatory responses after infection with RNA enteric viruses, including rotavirus, which is a double-stranded RNA virus. We therefore investigated the molecular mechanisms by which a cell wall component of <I>S. aureus</I> enhanced inflammatory responses during enteric viral infection using poly I:C-primed macrophages, which is a well-established model for double-stranded RNA virus infection. <I>S. aureus</I> lipoproteins enhanced IL-6 as well as TNF-α production in poly I:C-primed macrophages. Pam2CSK4, a mimic of Gram-positive bacterial lipoproteins and <I>S. aureus</I> lipoproteins, also significantly enhanced IL-6 production in poly I:C-primed macrophages. While IFN-β expression was increased in poly I:C-primed macrophages treated with Pam2CSK4 or <I>S. aureus</I> lipoproteins, the level of IL-6 enhancement in poly I:C-primed macrophages was decreased in the presence of anti-IFN-α/β receptor antibody, suggesting that IFN-β plays an important role in enhanced IL-6 production. Phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase, Akt, ERK and NF-κB were also involved in the enhanced IL-6 production.         Relationship between Soil Management Methods and Soil Chemical Properties in Protected Cultivation

        Various cultural practices have been promoted as management options for enhancing soil quality and health. The use of soil management methods can cause changes in fertility by affecting soil chemical properties. This study aimed to evaluate interactions between soil chemical properties and soil management methods in protected cultivation, and to classify soil management methods that similarly affect soil chemical properties. Water-logging and irrigation reduced soil pH and available $P_2O_5$ content. Application of animal manures has a positive effect on levels of organic matter, Av.$P_2O_5$, K, Zn, and Cu. The electrical conductivites tened to be low in the application of organic amendments, including rice and wood residues. Deeper plowing caused a reduction in Ca content. Practicing soil nutrient-considering fertilization and fertigation did not exert an influence on nutrient element contents. In a cluster analysis of the soil management methods according to major nutrients, low similarities were found with deeper plowing and crop rotation with rice in comparison with other practices. In a cluster analysis by minor nutrient characteristics, crop rotation and application of animal manures and rice residues were linked at a high Ward's distance, while other practices were found to be relatively low distinct. Each soil management method has a similar or different effect on soil chemical properties. These results suggest the necessity of establishing limits and standards according to the effects of soil management methods on soil chemical properties for economic soil practices.

      • Transmission Technologies for the Beyond 3G Satellite Systems

        본 논문에서는 IMT-2000 이후의 위성 시스템, B3G 이동위성통신시스템에 적용될 수 있는 전송 기술에 대하여 고찰한다. 위성 시스템은 지상 시스템에 대하여 비교적 긴 전파 지연을 가지고 있기 때문에 위성 부문에 적용될 기술은 이러한 특성에 적합해야 할 것이다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 3 세대 위성 시스템의 주요 특징을 분석하여 B3G 시스템에 적용하기 위하여 어떠한 점들이 수정되어야 할지를 제시하고, 적응형 변복조 방식, 하이브리드 ARQ 방식, STTD 방식등과 같이 B3G 위성 시스템에 적용될 가능성이 높은 몇가지 후보 기술에 대한 성능 시뮬레이션 결과를 제시한다. 이와 더불어, 향후에는 지상 시스템과의 호환을 위하여 현재 지상 시스템에서 논의되고 있는 다중 반송파 전송 기술, 간섭 제거기술 및 고효율 변복조 알고리즘에 대해서도 보다 자세히 분석되어야 할 것이다. This paper presents an investigation of transmission technologies for beyond IMT-2000 satellite systems. Because a satellite link has longer round trip delay than a terrestrial link, we need technologies that would make the satellite component especially efficient. By analyzing the main features of the satellite component of the IMT-2000 systems, we suggest desirable modifications for the application to beyond 3G system. We also demonstrate simulation results of a few new radio access technologies including adaptive coding with H-ARQ, STTD, indicating these can provide enhanced performance in mobile satellite channels. In addition, not only to increase the performance but also to keep commonalities between terrestrial standards, more advanced transmission technologies including multi-carrier transmission, interference cancellation, and highly efficient modulation and coding should be investigated in more detail.
