양액내 염류농도 증가에 의한 상추뿌리의 마이크로솜 ATPase 활성증가

염류장애에 의한 작물의 생육저해 원인을 밝혀내기 위하여 상추를 대조양액과 대조양액에 30 mM 및 50 mM KNO_3를 첨가하여 염류농도를 높인 양액 등 3가지 조건에서 재배하였으며, 이때 이들 양액의 EC는 각각 1.0, 4.5, 6.5 dS/m 이었다. 뿌리세포의 원형질막 및 액포막에 위치한 H^+-ATPase 활성은 각각에 특이적 저해제인 vanadate와 NO_3를 이용하여 측정하였다. 대조양액에서 재배한 상추 뿌리의 ATPase 활성은 356±1.5 nmol/min/mg protein이었으며, 30 mM과 50 mM KNO_3를 첨가한 양액에서는 활성이 대조활성에 비하여 각각 1.6배, 1.9배 증가하였다. 이것은 상추가 염류장애시 뿌리조직의 ATPase 활성증가를 통하여 적응함을 보여주는 것이며, 활성증가는 주로 액포막 H^+-ATPase 활성증가에 의해 이루어짐을 확인하였다. 마이크로솜 ATPase 활성에 미치는 여러 가지 중금속 이온들의 효과를 측정하였으며, 중금속 이온은 100 μM 농도에서 종류에 따라 활성을 10~25% 저해하였다. 특히, Cu^(2+)는 주로 액포막 H^+-ATPase 활성을 저해함을 확인하였다. 본 연구의 결과로부터 상추는 염류집적 환경에서 뿌리의 ATPase 활성, 특히 액포막에 위치한 H^+-ATPase 활성을 증가시켜 적응하며, Cu^(2+)는 주로 액포막 H^+-ATPase 활성을 저해하는 성분으로 뿌리의 ATPase 활성변화 연구에 유용하게 이용될 수 있음을 확인하였다. In order to investigate the mechanism of growth inhibition by salt stress, lettuces were grown hydroponically in three different nutrient solutions, normal and 30 mM or 50 mM KNO_3-added nutrient solutions, and the electrical conductivities of these solutions were 1.0, 4.5, and 6.5 dS/m, respectively. The activities of plasma and vacuolar H^+-ATPases in the root tissue of lettuce were measured by specific inhibitors, 100 μM vanadate and 50 mM No_3^-, respectively. Microsomal ATPase activity of lettuce grown in the normal nutrient solution was 356±1.5 nmol/min/mg protein. When lettuces were grown in 30 mM and 50 mM KNO_3-added nutrient solutions, total activities of microsomal ATPases were increased by 1.6 and 1.9 times, respectively, and the increases were mainly mediated by vacuolar H^+-ATPase. These results show that lettuces adapt themselves to salt-stressed condition by increasing the activities of H^+-ATPases. Effects of various heavy metal ions were investigated on the microsomal ATPases and various metal ions at 100 pM inhibited the activities by 10~25%. Cu^2+ showed the highest inhibitory effect on the vacuolar H^+-ATPase. These results suggest that lettuce increases the activities of root ATPases, specially that of vacuolar H^+-ATPase, in salt-stressed growth conditions and Cu^(2+) could be a useful tool to control the activity of vacuolar H^+-ATPase.
A Study on the Level of MERS-related Health Literacy in High School Students

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the level of MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome)-related health literacy in high school students. For this purpose, a survey questionnaire (11 questions) was developed on basic knowledge, prevention of infection and how to deal with symptoms of infection related to MERS. The survey was conducted on 491 high school students in G-province. The average score of high school students who responded to the questionnaire was 6.6 (60 points on a scale of 100 points), which is includeded in the middle level point in health literacy related to MERS. In the area of basic knowledge related to MERS, the high school students had a very high correct answer rate of 83.8%, but the correct answer ratio of knowledge on the prevention of MERS infection was 57.5% and that of the proper behavior to suspected MERS infection was 32.3%. The 35.8% of high school students who responded were distributed at the upper level in health literacy, 35.6% at the middle level, and 28.5% at the lower level. In addition, female students showed more distribution in the upper level of health literacy and less distribution in the lower level than male students. The important preventive actions against the epidemic of new respiratory diseases are practice of proper hand washing, coughing etiquette, and wearing a properly functioning mask. Therefore, this study suggests that there is a need to emphasize practical health education in the class of science (life science) and health subjects.
Caffeine Inhibits Cell Proliferation and Regulates PKA/GSK3β Pathways in U87MG Human Glioma Cells

Caffeine is the most commonly ingested methylxanthine and has anti-cancer effects in several types of cancer. In this study, we examined the anti-cancer effects of caffeine on gliomas, both in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, caffeine treatment reduced glioma cell proliferation through G_0/G_1-phase cell cycle arrest by suppressing Rb phosphorylation. In addition, caffeine induced apoptosis through caspase-3activation and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) cleavage. Caffeine also phosphorylated serine 9 of glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3β). Pretreatment with H89, a pharmacological inhibitor of protein kinase A (PKA), was able to antagonize caffeine-induced GSK3β^(ser9) phosphorylation,suggesting that the mechanism might involve a cAMP-dependent PKA-dependent pathway. In vivo, caffeine-treated tumors exhibited reduced proliferation and increased apoptosis compared with vehicle-treated tumors. These results suggest that caffeine induces cell cycle arrest and caspase-dependent cell death in glioma cells,supporting its potential use in chemotherapeutic options for malignant gliomas.

To obtain the useful data related to optimum nutrient management technique for pesticides-free jujube cultivation, nutrient contents of jujube leaves and fruits and the selected chemical properties of jujube orchard soils were investigated at 9 different orchards with pesticides-free cultivation in Boeun, Chungbuk, Korea. Soil and jujube leaf samples were collected from the different orchards in July and October, and jujube fruit samples were taken in October, 2012. Soil available P2O5 contents in the optimum level for jujube cultivation were 11% and 33% of total samples in July and October, respectively, but 56% of total samples was higher than the optimum level in both July and October. Exchangeable K and Ca ion contents were 44% and 67% of total samples, respectively, in both July and October, whereas exchangeable Mg ion content was 100% and 56% of total samples in July and October, respectively. Nutrient contents in jujube leaves were higher than those in fresh fruits. In addition, total nitrate, potassium and magnesium contents in the jujube leaves were higher in the samples collected in July than in October.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of hip joint exercise using an elastic band on dynamic balance, agility, and flexibility in healthy subjects. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: Thirty-five subjects (between 19 and 23 years) were randomly allocated to two groups: hip flexion exercise (HFE) group (n=17) and the hip abduction exercise (HAE) group (n=18). The HFE group participated in flexion exercise of the hip joint using an elastic band for 50 minutes a day, three days a week for four weeks, while the HAE group participated in abduction exercises of the hip joint using an elastic band for the same period. Dynamic balance was measured using the timed up and go (TUG) test, agility was measured with the standing long jump, and flexibility was measured using the Schober's test (5 cm, 10 cm). Results: The HFE group showed significant differences in the TUG test, standing long jump, and the Schober's test (10 cm) after training (p<0.05). The HAE group showed significant differences in the TUG test, standing long jump and the Schober's test (5 cm, 10 cm) after training (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference between the HFE group and the HAE group. Conclusions: Flexion and abduction exercises of the hip joint using and elastic band increased dynamic balance, agility, and flexibility in healthy subjects. Additional research on hip joint exercises using an elastic band for improving dynamic balance, agility and flexibility are necessary.

Background: Severe psoriasis is a systemic inflammatory disease involving major arteries and internal organs. However, it is not clear whether mild psoriasis increases the arterial inflammation and cardiovascular disease. Objectives: We aimed to investigate systemic inflammation using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) in patients with mild psoriasis. Methods: In a nested case-control study, FDG-PET/CT findings of 10 patients with mild chronic plaque psoriasis involving a body surface area of less than 5% were compared with those of 10 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The degree of FDG uptake in the large arteries (ascending aorta, aortic arch, descending aorta, suprarenal abdominal aorta and infrarenal abdominal aorta,) and liver were analyzed using the maximum target-to-background ratios (TBR). Results: There were no significant demographic differences between the psoriasis patients and the control subjects. Patients with psoriasis showed higher maximum TBR than healthy controls in all examined arterial segments, with statistical significance reached in the suprarenal abdominal aorta, ascending thoracic aorta and infrarenal abdominal aorta, and in the liver. The “candy cane sign”, which represents arterial inflammation of the thoracic aorta, was noted upon PET in the majority of psoriasis cases. Conclusion: Mild psoriasis is associated with arterial and hepatic inflammation, which can be readily demonstrated by using FDG-PET/CT.

This paper presents the electrical performances of novel AlGaSb/InGaAs heterojunctionbased vertical-tunneling field-effect transistor (VTFET). The device performance was investigated in views of the on-state current (Ion), drain-induced barrier thinning (DIBT), and subthreshold swing (SS) as the gate length (LG) was scaled down. The proposed TFET with a LG of 5 nm operated with an Ion of 1.3 mA/μm, a DIBT of 40 mV/V, and an SS of 23 mV/dec at a drain voltage (VDS) of 0.23 V. The proposed TFET provided approximately 25 times lower DIBT and 12 times smaller SS compared with the conventional LG of 5 nm TFET. The AlGaSb/InGaAs VTFET showed extremely high scalability and strong immunity against short-channel effects.
