        BREAKUP MODELING OF A LIQUID JET IN CROSS FLOW

        We propose a novel breakup model to simulate the catastrophic breakup regime in a supersonic cross flow. A developed model has been extended from an existing Kelvin-Helmholtz/Rayleigh-Taylor (K-H/R-T) hybrid model. A new mass reduction rate equation, which has critical effects on overall spray structure, is successfully adopted, and the breakup length, which is an important parameter in existing model, is replaced by the breakup initiation time. Measured data from the supersonic wind tunnel with a dimension of 762×152×127 mm was employed to validate the newly developed breakup model. A nonaerated injector with an orifice diameter of 0.5 mm is used to inject water into a supersonic flow prescribed by the momentum flux ratio of the liquid jet to free stream air, q0. The conservation-element and solution-element (CE/SE) method, a novel numerical framework for the general conservation law, is applied to simulate the supersonic compressible flow. The spray penetration height and average droplet size along with a spray penetration axis are quantitatively compared with data. The shock train flow structures induced by the presence of a liquid jet are further discussed.

        6면 프리즘 렌즈가 장착된 렌즈메터에서 상점의 위치로부터 시험렌즈의 편심의 위치를 알아 낼 수 있는 알고리즘을 개발하였다. 6개의 프리즘에 의해 형성되는 6개의 상점은 시험렌즈의 편심의 극좌표에 의해 변하게 되며, 비틀린 광선 추적으로 계산할 수 있다. 광학 설계 프로그램인 Code V를 사용하여 렌즈메터 광학계를 분석하고, 시험렌즈의 위치에 따른 상점의 위치 변화를 함수로 나타내서 역으로 상점의 위치로부터 시험렌즈의 편심의 위치를 알아낼 수 있는 방법을 개발하였다. We have developed an algorithm to determine the decenter position from the image points in a lensmeter with 6-sided prism lens. The positions of the image points which are formed by six prisms depends on the decenter position of a test lens and can be calculated by skew ray tracing. The optical characteristics of the lens meter was analyzed using the Code V program and the positions of the image points was expressed as a function of the decenter position of the test lens. By minimizing the expectation error, we can determine the decenter position of a test lens from the image positions.

        DISCOVERY OF AN X-RAY-EMITTING CONTACT BINARY SYSTEM 2MASS J11201034−2201340

        <P>We report the detection of orbital modulation, a model solution, and the X-ray properties of a newly discovered contact binary, Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) J11201034-2201340. We serendipitously found this X-ray point source outside the error ellipse when searching for possible X-ray counterparts of 7-ray millisecond pulsars among the unidentified objects detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The optical counterpart of the X-ray source (unrelated to the 7-ray source) was then identified using archival databases. The long-term Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey detected a precise signal with a period of P = 0.28876208 (56) days. A follow-up observation made by the Super Light Telescope of Lulin Observatory revealed the binary nature of the object. Utilizing archived photometric data of multi-band surveys, we construct the spectral energy distribution (SED), which is well fit by a K2V spectral template. The fitting result of the orbital profile using the Wilson Devinney code suggests that 2MASS J11201034-2201340 is a short-period A-type contact binary and the more massive component has a cool spot. The X-ray emission was first noted in observations made by Swift, and then further confirmed and characterized by an XMM-Newton observation. The X-ray spectrum can be described by a power law or thermal Bremsstrahlung. Unfortunately, we could not observe significant X-ray orbital modulation. Finally, according to the SED, this system is estimated to be 690 pc from Earth with a calculated X-ray intensity of (0.7 - 1.5) x 10(30) erg s(-1), which is in the expected range of an X-ray emitting contact binary.</P>

        알코올 발효사료 급여가 한우의 육성성적 및 혈액의 생리적 변화에 미치는 영향

        본 실험은 알코올 발효사료(alcohol 함량; 3.0∼3.2%, lactate 함량; 3.0∼3.5%) 처리가 한우 반추위내 혈액성분 및 비육능력에 미치는 영향을 검토하기 위하여 한우에 비지박 알코올 발효사료(Alcohol-fermented soybean curd dreg : AFS) 및 맥주박 알코올 발효사료(alcohol fermented brewery grain's : AFB)를 급여하여 평균체중이 329㎏인 한우 거세우 13두와 평균체중이 337㎏인 한우 비거세우 20두를 공시하여 증체량, 사료섭취량, 혈액성분, 혈중 알코올 함량을 측정하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 거세우에서 비육전기의 일당증체량 및 사료효율은 알코올 발효사료 급여구들이 대조구에 비해 개선되는 경향을 보였으며, 비육후기의 일당증체량은 처리에 따른 유의적인 차이를 나타내지 않았으며, 비육후기의 사료효율은 알코올 발효사료 급여구가 개선되는 경향을 보였다. 비거세우에서 일당증체량 및 사료효율은 알코올 발효사료 급여로 개선되는 경향을 보였으나 유의성은 나타나지 않았으며, 비육 후기에는 개선효과가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 혈중 알코올 농도는 알코올 발효사료 급여구가 시험사료 급여 2시간 후에 유의적으로 높게 나타났으나(p<0.05), 사료급여 4시간째에는 급여전의 수준으로 낮아졌다. BUN 농도는 거세우가 비거세우에 비해 높았으며(14.3 vs 10.97 ㎎/㎗, p<0.05), 혈중 creatinine 농도는 거세우가 비거세우보다 낮았다(1.39 vs 1.49㎎/㎗, p<0.05). 혈중 cholesterol 농도는 전체적으로 체중이 증가함에 따라 증가하는 것으로 나타났고, 혈중 glucose 농도는 알코올 발효사료 급여로 비거세우에서는 감소하는 경향을 보인 반면 거세우에서는 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 혈중 IP 농도는 알코올 발효사료 급여로 거세우 및 비거세우 모두 증가되었다.(p<0.05). This study was conducted to know the feeding effects of alcohol-fermented feedstuffs (alcohol concentration: 3.0∼3.2 %, lactate: 3.0∼3.5%) on the blood metabolites and fattening ability. Alcohol-fermented soybean curd dreg (AFS) and alcohol fermented brewery grain (AFB) were fed to 13 Korean steers (average body weight, 329㎏) and 20 Korean bulls (average 337㎏ B.W), and body weight gain, feed conversion rate, blood metabolites and blood alcohol concentration were analyzed. The feed conversion rates of steers at both fattening and finishing period were improved by feeding alcohol-fermented feedstuffs. However, improvement of daily body weight gain was observed only at fattening period. In bulls, body weight gains and feed conversion rate were also improved at fattening period (but not at finishing period) by feeding of alcohol-fermented feedstuffs, although a statistical significance was not detected. Blood alcohol concentrations of AFS and AFB group were significantly increased (p<0.05) at 2 hours after feeding, but dropped to the initial level at 4 hours after feeding. Blood urea nitrogen(BUN) concentrations of steers were higher than those of bulls (14.3 vs 10.97 ㎎/㎗), but creatinine was lower in steers than in bulls (1.39 vs 1.49㎎/㎗). Blood cholesterol concentration was generally proportional to the increment of body weight. While the blood glucose content was decreased in bulls by feeding alcohol-feedstuffs, it was increased in steers. Blood inorganic phosphorus(IP) level was increased in both steers and bulls.

        Existence of self-dual non-topological solutions in the Chern-Simons Higgs model

        In this paper we investigate the existence of non-topological solutions of the Chern-Simons Higgs model in R<SUP>2</SUP>. A long standing problem for this equation is: Given N vortex points and β>8π(N+1), does there exist a non-topological solution in R<SUP>2</SUP> such that the total magnetic flux is equal to β/2? In this paper, we prove the existence of such a solution if β@?{8πNkk-1|k=2,...,N}. We apply the bubbling analysis and the Leray-Schauder degree theory to solve this problem.

        Genetic polymorphism in pvmdr1 and pvcrt-o genes in relation to in vitro drug susceptibility of Plasmodium vivax isolates from malaria-endemic countries

        Treatment failure of chloroquine for Plasmodium vivax infection has increased in endemic countries. However, the molecular mechanisms for resistance and in vitro susceptibility of P. vivax to chloroquine remain elusive. We investigated the prevalence of mutations in the pvmdr1 and pvcrt-o genes, and the copy number of the pvmdr1 gene in isolates from the Republic of Korea (ROK), Thailand, the Union of Myanmar (Myanmar), and Papua New Guinea (PNG). We also measured in vitro susceptibility of Korean isolates to antimalarial drugs. The pvmdr1 analysis showed that mutations at amino acid position Y976F of pvmdr1 were found in isolates from Thailand (17.9%), Myanmar (13.3%), and PNG (100%), but none from the ROK, and mutation at position F1076L was present in isolates from the ROK (100%), Thailand (60.7%), and Myanmar (46.7%). One copy of the pvmdr1 gene was observed in most isolates and double copy numbers of the gene were observed in two Thai isolates. In the exons of the pvcrt-o gene that were sequenced, a K10 insertion was present in isolates from Thailand (56.0%) and Myanmar (46.2%), and the wild type was found in all Korean isolates. The results suggest that gene polymorphisms and copy number variation was observed in isolates of P. vivax from Southeast Asian countries. In Korean isolates polymorphism as limited to the F1076L variant, and no isolates with high level of resistance were found by in vitro susceptibility determinations. Moreover, our results provide a baseline for future prospective drug studies in malaria-endemic areas.

      • DISCOVERY OF X-RAY PULSATIONS FROM THE NEXT GEMINGA, PSR J1836+5925

        <P>We report recent XMM-Newton investigations of PSR J1836+5925, the 'next Geminga,' which determined an X-ray pulsation of similar to 173.3 ms. Its X-ray periodicity is consistent with the gamma-ray ephemeris at the same epoch. The X-ray folded light curve has a sinusoidal structure that is different from the double-peaked gamma-ray pulse profile. We have also analyzed the X-ray phase-averaged spectra which shows that the X-ray emission from PSR J1836+5925 is thermal dominant. This suggests that the X-ray pulsation mainly originates from the modulated hot spot on the stellar surface.</P>

      • Nuclear Receptor-Induced Chromosomal Proximity and DNA Breaks Underlie Specific Translocations in Cancer

        Chromosomal translocations are a hallmark of leukemia/lymphoma and also appear in solid tumors, but the underlying mechanism remains elusive. By establishing a cellular model that mimics the relative frequency of authentic translocation events without proliferation selection, we report mechanisms of nuclear receptor-dependent tumor translocations. Intronic binding of liganded androgen receptor (AR) first juxtaposes translocation loci by triggering intra- and interchromosomal interactions. AR then promotes site-specific DNA double-stranded breaks (DSBs) at translocation loci by recruiting two types of enzymatic activities induced by genotoxic stress and liganded AR, including activation-induced cytidine deaminase and the LINE-1 repeat-encoded ORF2 endonuclease. These enzymes synergistically generate site-selective DSBs at juxtaposed translocation loci that are ligated by nonhomologous end joining pathway for specific translocations. Our data suggest that the confluence of two parallel pathways initiated by liganded nuclear receptor and genotoxic stress underlies nonrandom tumor translocations, which may function in many types of tumors and pathological processes.

        Glucose and Its Role in Generating Reactive Oxygen Species Required for Mouse Sperm Fertilizing Ability

        Effects of xanthine (X), xanthine oxidase (XO), and catalase (C), $H_2O_2$, and carbohydrates on sperm capacitation, acrosome reaction, and fertilizing ability in vitro were examined. Glucose alone, but not fructose, supported the maximum rate of sperm capacitation and acrosome reaction. However, in the combination of X, XO, and C (XXOC) or $H_2O_2$, fructose alone also supported maximum capacitation, acrosome reaction, and fertilization. Either insufficient or excessive amounts of $H_2O_2$ decreased sperm capacitation and the acrosome reaction. In order to understand how glucose generates $H_2O_2$ or other reactive oxygen species in sperm cells, 6-aminonicotinamide, an inhibitor of the pentose-phosphate pathway (PPP), and apocynin, an inhibitor of NADPH oxidase, were added to sperm suspensions in glucose-containing medium. Results appeared that sperm capacitation, acrosome reaction, and fertilization were consequently inhibited by either one of these compounds. These inhibitory effects were nullified by addition of XXOC. These results support the hypothesis that glucose, in addition to being a substrate for glycolysis, facilitates sperm capacitation and the acrosome reaction by generating reactive oxygen species through G-6-P dehydrogenase and NADPH oxidase.

        SEQUENCE ANALYSIS AND COMPARISON OF BOVINE α<sub>S1</sub>-CASEIN GENOMIC DNA

        A phage clone containing the partial ${\alpha}_{S1}$-casein gene was isolated from a bovine genomic library by using mixed probes of ovine ${\alpha}_{S1}$-, ${\beta}$- and ${\kappa}$-casein cDNAs. Restriction enzyme mapping analysis for 14.6 kb revealed that the map was in conflict with the report of Meade et al. (1990), especially in the 3'-end fragment. Sequence analysis of 12.6 kb revealed a high AT/GC ratio (1.64); we have identified eight exon sequences according to the bovine ${\alpha}_{S1}$-casein cDNA sequence. The same exon/intron splice junction sequence was observed between these exons. We suggest that the bovine ${\alpha}_{S1}$-casein gene night contain a minimum of 18 exons and the full length is approximately 18-19 kb.
