Robotic Body-Mind Integration - Next Grand Challenge in Robotics

The field of robotics has evolved from industrial robots in the 1960s to entertainment and medical robots in the 2000s. During the last decade, major progress has been made in integrating robotic body with sensor and AI-based software. In this paper, I describe our efforts to realize a next generation of intelligent robots called cognitive robots. The paper proposes a multiagent-based cognitive robot architecture with three distinctive memory systems, namely short-term and long-term memory structures for routine task execution and a working memory system (WMS) which is closely tied to learning and execution of tasks and allows the robot to focus attention on the most relevant features of the current task. The concept of WMS in robotics is relatively new. WMS is expected to playa similar role of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of our brain which performs high-level function called cognitive control. Finally the interface between cognitive robots and machine consciousness is explored through an internal model called the Self Agent.

The valence state of Yb ions in β-YbAlB4 and its polymorph α-YbAlB4 has been investigated byusing X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy in SPring-8 at temperatures from 2 to 280 K. Theobserved Yb valence is 2.78 ± 0.01 in β-YbAlB4 at 2 K by using the X-ray emission spectroscopy. The valence is found to gradually increase with increasing temperature toward the trivalent state,and the characteristic temperature of the valence fluctuation is expected to be about 290 K. Wealso found a small increase in the Yb valence ( 0.002) by applying a magnetic field of 32 T at40 K to β-YbAlB4.

이 글에서는 국제적인 연구 개발 과제인 홀로닉 제조시스템에 대하여 개념, 목표와 현황과 HMS에서의 핵심 연구 내용을 기술하였다. 홀로닉 시스템의 개념은 소프트웨어 agent와 agent-based 시스템과 유사하다. 그러나, 가장 큰 차이점은 제조 공정을 조직화하여 표현하는 홀론과 홀론 조직은 부분과 전체의 관계를 더욱 잘 표시할 수 있다는 점이다. HMS 회원사에 의하여 개발되는 모델 시스템들을 통하여 HMS 개념의 중요성과 지능형 제조 시스템에 응용될 수 있다는 점이 확인될 수 있을 것이다.
Fast and reversible hydrogen storage in channel cages of hydroquinone clathrate

Guest-free hydroquinone (HQ) clathrate was synthesized by the gas-phase reaction between host HQ and guest CO<SUB>2</SUB> molecules, followed by removal of the CO<SUB>2</SUB> guests by controlled heating process. The H<SUB>2</SUB> storage capacity of the guest-free HQ clathrate is highly sensitive to the loading pressure; at 298K, it was found to be 0.19 wt.% at 10MPa and 0.38 wt.% at 35MPa. In particular, the guest-free HQ clathrate also exhibits an extremely fast uptake and release of H<SUB>2</SUB> in a time scale of a few seconds.

Inhibitory activities against angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) of enzymatic hydrolysates of porcine skeletal muscle proteins were investigated. Myosin B, myosin, actin, tropomyosin, troponin and water-soluble proteins extracted from pork loin were digested by eight kinds of proteases, including pepsin, $\alpha$-chymotrypsin, and trypsin. After digestion, hydrolysates produced from all proteins showed ACE inhibitory activities, and the peptic hydrolysate showed the strongest activity. In the case of myosin B, the molar concentration of peptic hydrolysate required to inhibit 50% of the activity increased gradually as digestion proceeded. The hydrolysates produced by sequential digestion with pepsin and $\alpha$-chymotrypsin, pepsin and trypsin or pepsin and pancreatin showed weaker activities than those by pepsin alone, suggesting that ACE inhibitory peptides from peptic digestion might lose their active sequences after digestion by the second protease. However, the hydrolysates produced by sequential digestion showed stronger activities than those by $\alpha$-chymotrypsin, trypsin or pancreatin alone. These results suggested that the hydrolysates of porcine meat were able to show ACE inhibitory activity, even if they were digested in vivo, and that pork might be a useful source of physiologically functional factors.
