        Liposomal honokiol, a potent anti-angiogenesis agent, in combination with radiotherapy produces a synergistic antitumor efficacy without increasing toxicity

        Honokiol is an active compound purified from magnolia that has been shown to induce cell differentiation, apoptosis, and anti-angiogenesis effects, as well as an enhancement in tumor growth delay in combination with chemotherapeutic agents in several mouse xenograft models. Our goal was to investigate the radiosensitization effect of honokiol on lung carcinoma. The radiosensitization effect of liposomal honokiol in Lewis lung carcinoma cells (LL/2) was analyzed using an in vitro clonogenic survival assay. For an in vivo study, Lewis lung carcinoma-bearing C57BL/6 mice were treated with either liposomal honokiol at 25 mg/kg or 5 Gy of single tumor radiation, or a combination of both over 12 days of treatment. The tumor growth delay and the survival time were evaluated. In addition, histological analysis of tumor sections was performed to examine changes by detecting the microvessel density and apoptosis in tumor tissues. In the clonogenic survival assay, LL/2 cells treated with IC50 Lipo-HNK for 24 h showed a radiation enhancement ratio of 1.9. After 12 days of combination treatment, the tumor volume decreased 78% and produced an anti-tumor activity 1.3-fold greater than a predicted additive effect of honokiol and radiation alone. This combination treatment also caused an 8.7 day delay in tumor growth. The cell cycle distribution and histological analysis demonstrated that liposomal honokiol has an anti-tumor effect via inducing apoptosis and inhibiting angiogenesis. Liposomal honokiol can enhance tumor cell radiosensitivity in vitro and in vivo, indicating that radiotherapy combined with liposomal honokiol can lead to greater anti-tumor efficacy.         Experimental study on aerodynamic characteristics of conductors covered with crescent-shaped ice

        Conductor galloping is a common disaster for the transmission lines. Among the existing analytical methods, the wind tunnel test is highlighted as the most effective approach to obtain the aerodynamic coefficients. In this paper, the aerodynamic coefficients of 12 conductor models covered with the crescent-shaped ice, which were fabricated considering the surface roughness of the iced conductor, were obtained based on the wind tunnel test. The influence of the Reynolds number and the shape parameter β, defined as the ratio of ice thickness to the diameter, were investigated. In addition, the effect of surface roughness of the iced conductor was discussed. Subsequently, unsteady areas of conductor galloping were calculated according to the Den Hartog criterion and the Nigol criterion. The results indicate that the aerodynamic coefficients of iced conductors change sharply at the attack angles of 20° and 170° with the increase of β. The surface roughness of iced conductors changed the range of attack angle, which was influenced by the increase of the Reynolds number. The experimental results can provide insights for preventing and controlling galloping.

        Knockout of the EgriBLOS2 gene results in the transparent integuments of Ectropis grisescens larvae

        The body colors of insects have evolved specialized roles in body protection, signaling and physiology. In some case, the larvae can camouflage their body colors to adapt the habitants and protect themselves. However, the genetic and molecular basis on larval body colors of the tea geometrid, Ectropis grisescens, remains poorly known. Here, we reported an effect of the lysosome-related organelles complex-1, subunit 2 (EgriBLOS2) gene knockout on larval integuments of E. grisescens, by using a clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) system. Combining transcriptomic data and PCR approaches, we first identified the EgriBLOS2 gene from E. grisescens, which encoded 137 amino acids and comprised 3 introns. In the phylogenetic analysis, EgriBLOS2 clustered in the Lepidoptera clade with high conservation to members in other lepidopteran species. Developmental expression profiles revealed that EgriBLOS2 was constantly tran scribed at each stage, in which its expression was significantly lower in 2nd instar larvae than that of other instars. After injecting EgriBLOS2-specific guide RNA and Cas9 messenger RNA into eggs, 70% of larvae showed the translucent integuments in G0 generation, with an emphasis on black splayed patterns in the 2nd and 8th segments of abdomens. However, some typical characteristics of larvae were not obviously changed in mutant instars, such as ocelli, mouthparts and other appendants. This study has unraveled the roles of EgriBLOS2 in the formation of larval integument colors, and provides an alternative strategy for pest management based on the colors in this species.

The developing strategy for Chinese railway is to raise the speed of the existing lines as a primary step and to construct the high-speed railway in selected sections concurrently. which proved that constructing high-speed railway in Beijing Shanghai area is the best choice.

        Construction of a genetic linkage map and QTL mapping of agronomic traits in Auricularia auricula-judae

        Auricularia auricula-judae is a traditional edible fungus that is cultivated widely in China. In this study, a genetic linkage map for A. auricula-judae was constructed using a mapping population consisting of 138 monokaryons derived from a hybrid strain (A119-5). The monokaryotic parent strains A14-5 and A18-119 were derived from two cultivated varieties, A14 (Qihei No. 1) and A18 (Qihei No. 2), respectively. In total, 130 simple sequence repeat markers were mapped. These markers were developed using the whole genome sequence of A. auricula-judae and amplified in A14-5, A18- 119, and the mapping population. The map consisted of 11 linkage groups (LGs) spanning 854 cM, with an average interval length of 6.57 cM. A testcross population was derived from crossing between the monokaryon A184-57 (from the wild strain A184 as a tester strain) and the mapping population. Important agronomic trait-related QTLs, including mycelium growth rate on potato dextrose agar for the mapping population, mycelium growth rate on potato dextrose agar and sawdust for the testcross population, growth period (days from inoculation to fruiting body harvesting), and yield for the testcross population, were identified using the composite interval mapping method. Six mycelium growth raterelated QTLs were identified on LG1 and LG4, two growth period-related QTLs were identified on LG2, and three yieldrelated QTLs were identified on LG2 and LG6. The results showed no linkage relationship between mycelium growth rate and growth period. The present study provides a foundation for locating genes for important agronomic characteristics in A. auricula-judae in the future.

        A Highly Stretchable, Sensitive Strain Sensor Based on the Dry Printing Method

        Use of Electronic skin (E-skin) has attracted significant attention, as it has broad application prospects in medical care, wearable electronic equipment, and body monitoring — particularly with respect to human motion detection. In this work, we developed a flexible, tensile strain sensor based on the dry printing method. A conductive layer, with a miniaturized network structure, was obtained by: (1) packing the grooves of a grid-like silicon template with a conductive powder composed of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanoparticles; (2) infiltrating liquid polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) into the powder voids using a coated, flexible PDMS substrate cover; (3) transferring the solidified, patterned conductive powder onto the flexible substrate by peeling the PDMS substrate cover off the template; (4) fabricating metal electrodes at both ends of the conductive layer and (5) encapsulating the strain sensor with liquid PDMS. After manufacture, the strain sensor was tested using the tensile test. Results from the tensile test demonstrate that the sensor has excellent electrical conductivity, including super high-sensitivity (GF > 1450), a large strain range (up to 35%), and good transparency; as ultraviolet (UV) spectrum analysis shows that the transmittance can reach > 60%. Thus, the sensor is potentially applicable to numerous sub-specialties that require specialized electronics.

        Propagation Properties of a Gaussian Beam from a High-NA Optical System in a Magneto-Optical Disk

        We have calculated the propagation properties of a Gaussian beam from a high-numerical-aperture (NA) optical system in a magneto-optical (MO) disk by combining an angular spectra analysis and optical matrix method. We obtained the optical and magneto-optical responses, the electric and magnetic field distributions, and the Joule loss profiles for the MO disk on which a Gaussian beam from different NA system was incident and compared the propagation properties of the Gaussian beam with those of a plane wave. The results show that the propagation properties of a Gaussian beam from an optical system with a high NA differ obviously from those of a plane wave, but a Gaussian beam with a larger spot diameter ({\it e.g.}, greater than 100 $\mu$m) can be regarded as a plane wave for the considered disk structure.

      • Case-Control Study of Diet in Patients with Cervical Cancer or Precancerosis in Wufeng, a High Incidence Region in China

        Purpose: To investigate the diet of patients with cervical cancer and precancerosis in the Wufeng area, a high-incidence region in China. Methods: In the case group, 104 patients diagnosed with cervical cancer or cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CINII/III) were recruited from the Wufeng area. Nine hundred thirty-six healthy women were selected from the same area as the matched controls. A questionnaire, which included questions about general lifestyle conditions, smoking and alcohol status, source of drinking water, green tea intake, and diet in the past year, was presented to all participants. Results: Green tea intake (P=0.022, OR=0.551, 95% CI=0.330-0.919) and vegetable intake (P=0.035, OR=0.896, 95% CI=0.809-0.993) were identified as protective factors against cervical cancer or CINII/III. There was no indication of any associations of other lifestyle factors (smoking status, alcohol status, source of drinking water) or diet (intake of fruit, meat/egg/milk, soybean food, onion/garlic, staple food and pickled food) with cervical cancer. Conclusions: The results suggest that eating more fresh vegetables and drinking more green tea may help to reduce the risk of cervical cancer or CINII/III in people of the Wufeng area.

        Novel AgCl/Ag2SO3 Hybrids as a Visible-Light-driven Photocatalyst: Preparation, Characterization, and Degradation of Rhodamine-B and Methyl Orange

        The novel AgCl/Ag2SO3 hybrids as an efficient photocatalyst had been fabricated by an in situ synthetic method. The correlations between the structure and the photocatalytic properties of the as-fabricated hybrids were analyzed. Experimental results exhibited that with increasing the amount of Ag2SO3, the degradation rate of the as-obtained samples was firstly increased and then decreased under the visible light irradiation. When the mass ratio of AgCl to Ag2SO3 was 1:2, in 30?min, it displayed the highest degradation rate of 99.2% for rhodamine-B, which was obviously higher than 46.1, 60.5, and 14.6% of pure AgCl, Ag2SO3, and TiO2 (P25), respectively. Similar results could be found in degradation of methyl orange. It had the maximum of 97.4% in 90?min, which was higher than 55.2, 48.7, and 12.7% of pure AgCl, Ag2SO3, and P25, respectively. Moreover, the as-prepared hybrids possessed the enhanced separation and transfer of photo-generated electron?hole pairs compared to the pure samples. In addition, the holes and superoxide radicals played the dominant role and the hydroxyl radicals played the secondary role during the process of photocatalytic degradation.

        ORiginal Article : PNPLA3 rs738409 Polymorphism Associated with Hepatic Steatosis and Advanced Fibrosis in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis C Virus: A Meta-Analysis

        Background/Aims: The recognition of a correlation between patatin-like phospholipase domain containing-protein 3 (PNPLA3) rs738409 (C>G) and the severity of liver steatosis or fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) has not reached a consensus. This meta-analysis sought to investigate with accuracy the association between the PNPLA3 rs738409 (C>G) polymorphism and liver steatosis and advanced fibrosis in CHC patients. Methods: We performed a comprehensive literature search from the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases up to December 31, 2014. Crude odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Statistical analyses were performed using Stata 12.0 software. Results: The meta-analysis revealed the severity of liver fibrosis was significantly higher in CHC patients with PNPLA3 rs738409 GG in Caucasians (versus CC+CG: OR, 2.29; 95% CI, 1.57 to 3.35; p<0.05) but not Asian populations. In Caucasians, liver steatosis was also more severe in CHC patients with rs738409 GG (versus CC+CG; OR, 4.33; 95% CI, 2.59 to 7.22; p<0.05). The sensitivity analysis indicated the results of this meta-analysis were stable and no publication bias was detected. Conclusions: PNPLA3 rs738409 (C>G) was associated with the risk of both advanced liver fibrosis and steatosis in patients with CHC, especially among Caucasian populations.
