Brain donation has helped researchers and doctors to better understand the pathophysiology of disease, and it is also a key procedure in the research on treatment and prevention of brain diseases. However, it is known that various factors such as personal environment, social cognition, and attitude affect the brain donation decision. The purpose of this study is to investigate perception about brain donation and to figure out affecting factors of the brain donation in Korean community. From October to November 2017, 411 community residents were enrolled in this study. A designed questionnaire was used to analyze the perception and affecting factors of brain donation. Among the 411 participants, only 31 participants (7.5%) were aware of brain donation. After providing the correct information through the questionnaire, we were able to observe a positive change in the recognition of brain donation. In addition, factors including ‘for helping others’, ‘social contribution by promoting brain research’, and ‘for medical development’ have been found to affect positive attitude. This study found education and providing detailed information about brain donation was insufficient. And it also figured out accurate information would contribute to a positive change of the recognition about brain donation. Therefore, in order to invigorate culture of brain donation, it is necessary to provide more detailed information and education related to the results on positive and negative perception about brain donation.

Down Syndrome, Obstetricians Should Know

Down syndrome is the most common trisomy abnormality, and generally occurs in about 1 in 700 surviving children. According to a Korean study, the prevalence of Down syndrome was about 5.03 out of 10,000 surviving children born from 2007 to 2016 and about 200-277 newborns with Down syndrome were born every year. In the past, the average survival age of Down syndrome was low, but recently it has been extended to 60 years and the quality of life is improving. Recently, there have been many improvements in the education of children with Down syndrome, and various studies have been conducted at the preclinical and clinical stages about cognitive impairment, which was thought to be impossible to treat previously. In Korea, obstetricians mainly play the role of providing medical information in the process of screening and confirming Down syndrome. Therefore, medical staff need to be familiar with the latest knowledge on medical conditions, treatment and prognosis, and quality of life of Down syndrome. Through this review, we provide information on prenatal diagnosis and counseling for Down syndrome and medical problems that may occur in Down syndrome. We also review the latest research on improving cognitive function of Down syndrome. In addition, we summarize literature in Korean about Down syndrome from a social point of view and introduce websites and social media related to Down syndrome, as well as an economic support system in Korea. By providing comprehensive and contemporary information, we ultimately hope to help families with Down syndrome.
A female patient with Xp21 gene deletion syndrome

Xp21 contiguous gene deletion syndrome is associated with complex glycerol kinase deficiency, congenital adrenal hypoplasia, Duchene muscular dystrophy, and intellectual disability. Xp21 gene deletion syndrome is X-linked recessive, so most symptomatic patients are male, and only a few female symptomatic patients have been reported. We report the first female Korean case of an Xp21 deletion. NGS data were analyzed for copy number variation, and the Xp21 deletion (chr X: 29301056-31838200) was confirmed using real-time PCR.

The study of quality and salting characteristics of root vegetables other than Chinese cabbage was done to develop different kinds of Kimchi. The root vegetables lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) and lance Asia bell (Codonopsis lanceolata) were evaluated as main ingredients for Kimchi by measuring their physico-chemical and microbial properties. Salinity, pH, titratable acidity, reducing sugar, firmness, color change, moisture content, total viable counts, and lactic acid bacteria were investigated to identify adaptability for Kimchi. The initial pH of lotus and lance Asia bell showed 5.7 to 6.3 during the salting period, and the pH decreased with increasing salting periods. The reducing sugar contents of lance Asia bell showed 34.1 to 35.6 mg/g, which were significantly higher compared to lotus 3.2 to 3.4 mg/g. Titratable acidity also showed higher in salted lance Asia bell at 0.36 to 0.4%, while lotus showed 0.17 to 0.27%. Lactic acid producing bacteria increased in lance Asia bell during salting periods and reached 2.1×104 CFU/g after 48 hr of salting. However, no lactic acid bacteria were detected in lotus. As a result of this physico-chemical and microbial analysis, lance Asia bell was more suitable as an ingredient of Kimchi than lotus.
A Study on Characteristics of Landscape Color element on the Urban Waterfront

According to changes in industrial structure, the advanced cities of the world are seeking new land use of the waterfront and new urban image based on it. According to this flow, starting with the Cheonggaecheon project, Korea is also making a lot of efforts to improve the amenity of the city through restoration and improvement projects of waterfront. However, unfortunately, the clear concept and improvement direction on city waterfront have not been established until now due to lack of research and history related to domestic city waterfront. Therefore, this study attempted to present the landscape color improvement direction to form eco-friendly waterfront landscape through the analysis on successful waterfront improvement cases in Nakanoshima water park of Osaka and Ashiya river of Kobe. The findings showed that basic colors of the landscape are formed according to the urban environment. And eco-friendly landscape is be formed by color elements of nature playing a role of accent colors of the landscape through restrained landscape planning of artificial color elements. Also, based on the result of analyzing chrominance of important artificial color elements , it could be seen that continuity of the landscape is formed because the average value of fixed landscape elements of city and waterfront shows about 10 chrominance around base colors. This study has the objectivity of research due to the analysis through quantitative color measurement of landscape colors on successful improvement cases of waterfront in Japan and is expected to be used as basic data on continuity of colors plan of waterfront to be progressed in the future.
