Seeds or beans of 55 plants belonging to 31 families were screened by using several different types of red blood cells to find new lectins. In this paper, white kidney been (phaseolus vulgaris C.) was chosen to study biochemical properties of hemagglutinating proteins(lectins). An anion exchanger, DEAE Sephadex A-50, and polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis were main techniques used. From three main fractions eluted by stepwise NaCl gradient in 25mM Tris-HCI buffer on DEAE Sephadex column, principal lectin was identified.

The fat embolism syndrome is a serious and potentially life threatening complication of long bone trauma, blunt trauma and intramedullary manipulation. A 26-year-old woman underwent an intramedullary nailing of the femur under general anesthesia 45 hours after a traffic accident. The operation ended uneventfully and the patient was extubated in the operatirg room. About one hour after the patient arrived at the recovery room, she progressively developed tachycardia, tachypnea, cyanosis and drowsiness. The fat embolism syndrome was suspected because of the above clinical signs, and because pulmonary edema appeared on a simple chest A-P. During six days of intensive treatment in response to the fat embolism syndrome, the patient,s vital signs and ventilatory status progressively improved. The patient was uneventfully discharged from the hospital 19 days after her operation. (Korean J Anesthesiol 1999; 37: 731∼736)
Extra-Axial Medulloblastoma in the Cerebellar Hemisphere

Extra-axial medulloblastoma is a rare phenomenon. We report a case in a 5-year-old boy who presented with nausea, vomiting, and gait disturbance. He was treated with total removal of the tumor. This is the first case of an extra-axially located medulloblastoma occurring in the cerebellar hemisphere posteriolateral to the cerebellopontine angle in Korea. Although the extra-axial occurrence of medulloblastoma is rare, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of extra-axial lesions of the posterior fossa in children.
Isolation and Purification of New lectins from Leguminosae

In order to find new lectins from Korean natural products, seeds or beans of 55 kinds plants belonging to 31 families were screened by using several different type of red blood cells. White kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris, C.,W,K,B,) and Cercis chinensis (C.C.) belonging to the Leguminosae contained strong hemagglutinating proteins. The crude lectin from W.K.B. were purified by DEAE-Sephadex A-50 column chromatography. The 0.1 M peak from this procedure demonstrated acceptable criteria, e. g. yield, optical density and hemagglutinating activity and three bands were observed in polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis. A further purification was achieved by hydroxyapatite column chromatography and strong hemagglutinating activity were recovered in 0. 1 M peak. It was electrophoresed and found to migrate as a single band. These suggest that the condition of purif ication for W. K. B. lectin was encourageable but did not brought agreeable satisfaction to the Cercis chinensis lectin even by these very same methods.
STUDIES ON BIOACTIVE MARINE NATURAL SUBSTANCE, LECTINS : MARINE ANIMAL LECTINS (XII)

The objective of this research is to find new biopotential substances from marine natural products. 60 species from 22 families of marine mollusks (shells) and 16 species from 11 families of marine invertebrates (in total 76 species of animals from 33 families) were collected and studied extensively for their lectin components. Among these, 14 species from shells and 3 species from invertebrates (17 species in total) turned out as containing lectins components relatively high amounts in their tissue or in body fluid. In order to obtain new lectins, many attempts have been performed from the meat and/or body fluid of animals (i. e., Chlorostoma argyrostoma lischkei, Meretricx lusoria, Neptunea intersculpta, Styela plicata, Tapes philippinarum, etc.) which contained relatively high amounts of lectins. Lectins are obtained from the animals by physical saline extraction, ammonium sulfate salt fractionation, centrifugation, ion exchange chromatography, hydroxyapatite column, chromatofocusing, gel filtration, affinity chromatography and so on. To characterize biophysicochemical properties of this particular components, protein assay, polyacrylamide disc gel and SDS electrophoresis, carbohydrate analysis, carbohydrate specificities, mitogenicity and immunochemical analysis were performed.

A new lectin(NIB) was obtained from the Neptunea intersculpta through the following procedure; 0.15 M NaCl extraction, (NH₄)₂SO salt fractionation, DEAE-cellulose 52, hydroxyapatite and chromatofocusing column chromatography. The hemagglutinating activity of the lectin was stable by 45℃ and was inhibited by lactose, N-acetyl-D-galactosamine and D-galactose. It's isoelectric point was pH 3.8 and it was composed of three kinds of subunits; 68;000, 66,000 and 61,000 daltons. The lectin contained relatively high contents of acidic amino acids, but the amount of sulfur cotaining amino acids was not estimated.

색깔과 향기는 생명현상의 표현 그 자체중의 하나라 할 수 있다. 모든 생명체는 각각 감지되는 정도의 차이는 있을지언정 모두가 독특한 색과 냄새를 지닌 채 태어나고, 자라고, 노화하고, 죽음에 이르는 물질대사의 현상을 나타낸다. 그리고 사람들은 누구나 아름다운 색깔과 신선하고 감미로운 냄새를 좋아한다. 이렇게 좋은 냄새로 더 좋은 환경을 만들어 정신과 육체가 더 건강해 지고 그러므로 생활의 질이 향상되도록 하는 방법, 이것이 바로 향기(방향)요법(aromatherapy)이다. 여기에 이용되는 향의 원료는 천연물중 대부분이 식물의 생식기관에 해당되는 꽃, 열매, 과일, 종자 등에서 얻어진다. 이와 같은 현상은 고대에서부터 현대 문명에 이르기까지 그러했듯이, 미래에도 변함없이 인류는 자연의 산물중 하나인 방향성 식물을 이용할 것이다. 특히 앞으로는 과학기술의 발달과 더불어 열대 다우(多雨)지역 원시림 등 아직 사람들이 접근하지 못한 미개척지에서의 신품종 발견, 환경조절이 가능한 phytotron의 개발 이용, 새로운 생명공학기법의 도입 응용 등으로 더 많고 좋은 새로운 천연자원을 개발하게 될 것이다. 이런 꾸준하고 다양한 노력의 결과로 우리 인류의 생활의 질은 지속적으로 향상되리라 믿는다. 자연과학의 연구목표는 우리가 익혀 터득한 과학기술을 통해 인류를 더 행복하게 하려는데 있다. 이와 같은 자연과학의 바탕에는 문화예술이 있어야 그 과학은 더욱 건실하고 그런 사회와 국가는 번영함을 우리는 알아야한다. 꽃의 색과 향기를 찾아내고 이용하는 방안은 유사이래 문화예술임과 동시에 과학이었음을 강조하며, 다음과 같은 내용에 대하여 언급하고자 한다.
